Chronic Maxillary Sinusitis: A comparison of osteological and CT methods of diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the differences between endoscopic and radiological methods of analysis for diagnosing chronic maxillary sinusitis (CMS) in archaeological skeletal remains. MATERIALS: 32 crania from a Dutch post-medieval rural population. METHODS: We assessed the presence of bone changes indicative of CMS (i.e., bone growth and bone resorption) both endoscopically and through computed tomography (CT), and then compared results. RESULTS: We observed moderate agreement between bone growth scores obtained through endoscopy and CT, and fair agreement when assessing bone resorption. CONCLU

An osteological study of occipitocervical synostosis: its embryological and clinical significance.

BACKGROUND: Synostosis or fusion of atlas with occipital bone is known as occipitocervical synostosis, occipitalization of the atlas, or atlanto-occipital fusion. This is a rare congenital malformation at craniovertebral junction. Its incidence ranges from 0.08%-3% in general population. Occipitocervical synostosis result in narrowing of foramen magnum which may compress the brain stem, vertebral artery and cranial nerves. Knowledge of occipitocervical synostosis is important for the surgeons during the surgeries in the craniovertebral region. Hence, the present study was undertaken to determi

Evaluating bacterial pathogen DNA preservation in museum osteological collections.

Reports of bacterial pathogen DNA sequences obtained from archaeological bone specimens raise the possibility of greatly improving our understanding of the history of infectious diseases. However, the survival of pathogen DNA over long time periods is poorly characterized, and scepticism remains about the reliability of these data. In order to explore the survival of bacterial pathogen DNA in bone specimens, we analysed samples from 59 eighteenth and twentieth century individuals known to have been infected with either Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Treponema pallidum. No reproducible evidence

Larval development and osteology of Callanthias platei (Teleostei: Callanthiidae) from Desventuradas Islands, South Pacific.

Larvae of the Juan Fernández Splendid Perch, Callanthias platei Steindachner, 1898 (Teleostei: Callanthiidae), are described for the first time. The five available specimens, ranging from 3 mm notochord length (NL) to 6.1 mm standard length (SL), were collected with plankton nets near Desventuradas Islands, Southeast Pacific, during the austral spring of 2015 and 2016. The larvae are deep bodied with a narrow caudal peduncle, a large head and a triangular, coiled gut. The pigmentation is scarce in preflexion larvae but increases after flexion. All individuals have several groups of head spines

Osteology and Radiological Anatomy of the Thoracic Limbs of Temminck's Ground Pangolin (Smutsia temminckii).

Temminck's ground pangolin is the only pangolin present in South Africa. It is a myrmecophagous mammal with a bipedal gait. The thoracic limbs are used to break open ant nests, dig for food, and expand previously occupied burrows. This study describes the osteology and radiological anatomy of the thoracic limbs of this threatened species. Thoracic limbs from four Temminck's ground pangolins, which succumbed from electrocution or natural causes, were digitally radiographed in situ. The individual bones were then cleaned, described and digitally radiographed. The skeleton of the thoracic limbs r

Osteology and radiology of the vertebral column in the white-eared opossum (Didelphis albiventris).

The white-eared opossum present a higher roadkill number in Brazil, and the vertebral column is often affected when some type of trauma occurs. Thus, this study describes the osteology and radiology of the vertebral column in white-eared opossum to serve as a basis for support in the veterinary clinical care, since the casuistry of care of this marsupial has increased every year. Radiographs of the cervical (C), thoracic (T), lumbar (L), sacral (S) and caudal (Cd) segments of the vertebral column were taken in thirty-five white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris). Furthermore, ten opossums

Osteology of the Late Triassic Bipedal Archosaur Poposaurus gracilis (Archosauria: Pseudosuchia) from Western North America.

Poposaurus gracilis is a bipedal pseudosuchian archosaur that has been poorly understood since the discovery of the holotype fragmentary partial postcranial skeleton in 1915. Poposaurus. gracilis is a member of Poposauroidea, an unusually morphologically divergent clade of pseudosuchians containing taxa that are bipedal, quadrupedal, toothed, edentulous, and some individuals with elongated thoracic neural spines (i.e., sails). In 2003, a well preserved, fully articulated, and nearly complete postcranial skeleton of P. gracilis was discovered with some fragmentary cranial elements from the Uppe

Osteology and taxonomic revision of Hyphalosaurus (Diapsida: Choristodera) from the Lower Cretaceous of Liaoning, China.

Although the long-necked choristodere Hyphalosaurus is the most abundant tetrapod fossil in the renowned Yixian Formation fossil beds of Liaoning Province, China, the genus has only been briefly described from largely unprepared specimens. This paper provides a thorough osteological description of the type species Hyphalosaurus lingyuanensis and the con-generic species Hyphalosaurus baitaigouensis based on the study of fossils from several research institutions in China. The diagnoses for these two species are revised based on comparison of a large sample of specimens from the type area and ho

Testing the reliability of the rearticulation of osteological primate pelves in comparative morphological studies.

The evolution of human pelvic form is primarily studied using disarticulated osteological material of living and fossil primates that need rearticulation to approximate anatomical position. To test whether this technique introduces errors that impact biological signals, virtual rearticulations of the pelvis in anatomical position from computed tomography scans were compared with rearticulated models from the same individuals for one female and one male of Homo sapiens, Pan troglodytes, Macaca mulatta, Lepilemur mustelinus, Galago senegalensis, and Nycticebus pygmaeus. "Cadaveric" pelvic bones

The Relationship Between Angular Osteologic and Radiographic Measurements of the Human Talus and Calcaneus.

BACKGROUND: Radiographic imaging of the foot is commonly performed when medical evaluation is indicated. Angular measurements between bones may be assessed as part of the examination for trauma and foot biomechanics. However, angular relationships between surfaces of the physical bone as they compare with the bone's radiographic image has had limited investigation. METHODS: For this study, 54 human feet from amputated limbs were imaged in standard radiographic views and skeletonized. Selected angular measurements were taken on each skeletonized talus and calcaneus and were compared with those

[Rare osteological diseases in the rheumatological consultation: hypophosphatasia and phosphate loss syndromes].

Metabolic bone diseases cause bone and joint pain and are manifested as rheumatism. Typical for the rare genetic disease hypophosphatasia is a reduced activity of alkaline phosphatase (AP), where the variable residual activity causes the heterogeneous symptoms (e.g., arthralgia, myalgia and fractures). It is indicated by repeatedly low AP measurements. The diagnosis requires a meticulous medical history and laboratory-based clarification in order to rule out other differential diagnoses. Although supportive measures form the basis of treatment, costly enzyme replacement therapy is a possible t

Analyzing Pelvic Asymmetry by Sex and Ancestry: Insights From an Osteological Collection.

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic asymmetry has been noted in pelvic imaging, and might influence the development of various spinal pathologies, most notably scoliosis. There is a limited understanding of the relationship between pelvic asymmetry and sex and ancestry, and limited use of 3D modeling. The purpose of this study was to identify pelvic asymmetry and morphology differences between sex and ancestry utilizing 3D modeling on young adults in an osteological collection. METHODS: Thirty-three osteological pelvic specimens aged 18-25 years (average age 21.4 ± 2.0 years) were scanned to create virtual

Validating osteological correlates for the hepatic piston in the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).

Unlike the majority of sauropsids, which breathe primarily through costal and abdominal muscle contractions, extant crocodilians have evolved the hepatic piston pump, a unique additional ventilatory mechanism powered by the diaphragmaticus muscle. This muscle originates from the bony pelvis, wrapping around the abdominal viscera, extending cranially to the liver. The liver then attaches to the caudal margin of the lungs, resulting in a sub-fusiform morphology for the entire "pulmo-hepatic-diaphragmatic" structure. When the diaphragmaticus muscle contracts during inspiration, the liver is pulle

Internal tibial torsion is related to syndesmosis injury in a large osteological collection.

BACKGROUND: The long-term consequences of tibial torsion remain unclear. This study evaluated whether syndesmotic injuries are associated with tibial torsion. METHODS: A collection of over 3000 cadaveric skeletons was screened for irregular bony prominence along the lateral distal tibia, consistent with previous syndesmosis injury. Tibial torsion was measured and compared to 1034 control cadaveric tibiae. RESULTS: Mean torsion of 236 specimens with syndesmotic injury was 6.2±8.9 degrees, while that of control specimens was 7.9±8.8 degrees (P = 0.008). Multiple regression analysis showed a no

The Relationship Between Linear Osteological and Radiographic Measurements of the Human Calcaneus and Talus.

Plain radiographs of the foot are a common form of examination in individuals when medical evaluation is indicated. Their availability makes them useful for studying human variation where large sample sizes are crucial. Calcaneal and talar morphology are critical in the understanding of human foot form and function, but few studies have examined the accuracy of linear measurements of these bones taken from radiographs. If linear measurements are to be used in quantitative analysis, their accuracy must first be demonstrated. For this study, 54 human feet from amputated limbs were imaged in stan

Archosauriform endocranial morphology and osteological evidence for semiaquatic sensory adaptations in phytosaurs.

The examination of endocranial data of archosauriforms has led to advances on the evolution of body size, nerve pathways, and sensory abilities. However, much of that research has focused on bird-line archosaurs, resulting in a skewed view of Archosauria. Phytosauria, a hypothesized sister taxon to or early-branching member of Archosauria, provides a potential outgroup condition. Most previous phytosaur endocranial studies were executed without the use of modern technology and focused on derived members of Phytosauria. We present a comparative CT examination of the internal cranial anatomy of
