Integrative Approaches to Atopic Dermatitis: Exploring Biomarkers, Current Therapies, and the Potential Role of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, relapsing, and remitting condition that affects approximately 10% of the population. It is a multifactorial disease involving immune dysregulation, gene mutations, and environmental factors that ultimately disrupt skin barrier restoration, causing pruritic lesions. Given the marked heterogeneity of AD and the presence of multiple immune and clinical endotypes, no single therapeutic strategy is likely to be universally effective. Instead, a growing panel of distinct biomarkers offers an avenue for true precision medicine by enabling more accurate endotype cl

Abnormal Foot Progression Angle Kinematics in Cervical Dystonia Improved After Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine: A Prospective Case Series.

Introduction Cervical dystonia (CD), a rare disorder, is the most common form of dystonia, a movement disorder. Impairments in activities of daily living and quality of life may result from chronic pain, perceived stigma, difficulty walking, and/or lack of control over movements. Studies of treatments for difficulty walking in CD have been inconclusive. Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) has been used to improve gait biomechanics in other health conditions. Foot progression angle (FPA) while walking indicates functional gait abnormalities that increase the risk of knee injury and osteoart

Potential Adjunctive Role of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine in the Management of Cancer-Related Bone Pain: A Narrative Review.

Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is known for its therapeutic potential on the musculoskeletal system, and its emerging role and potential benefits in oncology care are gaining attention. Patients with primary and metastatic bone cancer tend to experience pain, restricted movement, and lower quality of life due to the pathology and its treatment. This narrative review examines the mechanistic rationale and available clinical evidence supporting the use of OMM in the management of pain and functional impairment among patients with bone malignancies. A literature search was conducted usin

A Narrative Review on the Viability of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine in Treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome With Constipation (IBS-C).

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain and alterations in bowel habits, with global prevalence. The etiology of the disease is likely multifactorial; however, autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction and immune-mediated inflammation may contribute the most to the hallmark symptoms of abdominal pain and altered motility of the gut. Current pharmacological therapies operate to modulate intestinal transit, alter the composition of the gut flora and control pain. Non-pharmacological approaches include dietary changes, incr

Preliminary Effects of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine on Reactive Oxygen Species in Parkinson's Disease: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study.

Context Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder and causes many clinical manifestations including bradykinesia, tremor, postural instability, and musculoskeletal stiffness. Neurodegeneration is commonly associated with oxidative stress. Oxidative stress has not been measured in PD in relation to the manual techniques used in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT). Objective To investigate the effect of OMT on oxidative stress biomarkers in PD. Methods In this randomized non-blinded study, 32 PD subjects were separated by block randomization into counseli

The Emerging Role of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine in Enhancing Quality of Life for Palliative and End-of-Life Patients: A Narrative Review.

Palliative and end-of-life care aim to minimize suffering and optimize the quality of life for individuals nearing the end of their lives. Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) represents a potentially valuable nonpharmacological approach within this integrative care framework. Emerging evidence from clinical observations, small-scale studies, and foundational osteopathic principles suggests that OMM may help support patient comfort, alleviate certain symptoms, and contribute to dignity in care. Techniques such as myofascial release, cranial manipulation, and lymphatic drainage have been rep

Evaluating Community Awareness of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and New Educational Programs in Fresno County, United States: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

Introduction  Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is a patient-centered, evidence-based approach emphasizing the body's ability to self-heal and the interrelationship between structure and function. Despite its established history and growing recognition, public awareness of OMM and the role of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) remains limited, particularly in underserved regions such as Fresno County, California. With the recent establishment of California Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine (CHSU-COM) in Clovis, understanding local awareness and perceptions of o

Brief report of a clinical trial on the duration of middle ear effusion in young children using a standardized osteopathic manipulative medicine protocol.

CONTEXT: Osteopathic physicians have used osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) to treat patients with acute otitis media (AOM) and its sequelae (eg, middle ear effusion [MEE], conductive hearing loss) for more than a century. However, few clinical trials document the efficacy of OMM, perhaps because of various challenges related to OMM clinical trials. OBJECTIVES: To describe a research protocol studying the efficacy of OMM on MEE after an episode of AOM, comment on the feasibility of the protocol and statistical analysis, and report on lessons learned in the first 9 months of the study.

It's All in Your Head: A Case Report of Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness and Chronic Anxiety Treated Simultaneously With Osteopathic Cranial Manipulative Medicine.

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness is a chronic functional vestibular disorder characterized by persistent dizziness, imbalance, motion sensitivity, and significant psychological distress, frequently including anxiety. Symptoms often persist despite normal imaging and multidisciplinary evaluation, contributing to diagnostic uncertainty and misattribution to psychiatric causes. Osteopathic cranial manipulative medicine is not routinely incorporated into the management of persistent postural-perceptual dizziness despite osteopathic principles, emphasizing the interrelationship between cran

Assessing the Knowledge of the Osteopathic Profession in New York City's Eastern European Communities.

Background According to the decennial Osteopathic Survey of Healthcare in America, the osteopathic profession has been steadily gaining recognition in the United States, particularly among the White/Caucasian demographic. This, however, does not take into account immigrant European communities that, while racially classified as White/Caucasian, may be unexposed to osteopathic physicians (DOs) in their home country and may be reticent to osteopathic manipulative medicine. Data on non-English-speaking communities are limited and can mask the need for further outreach. This study aimed to identif

Analysis of AOA/ACGME accredited family medicine residency programs.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: American Osteopathic Association (AOA) accreditation of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) family medicine residency programs began in the early 1990s to increase the number of Osteopathic Graduate Medical Education (OGME) training positions in family medicine. Despite the rapid expansion of family medicine residencies accredited by both the AOA and the ACGME, little has been published about issues facing these programs. METHODS: We developed an Internet-based survey for osteopathic program directors of dual-accredited family medicine resid

Osteopathic Manipulation in the Management of Chronic Pain: Current Perspectives.

Chronic pain is a common condition that often interferes with work or other activities. Guidelines support the use of non-pharmacological treatments, such as spinal manipulation, in patients with chronic pain. Osteopathic physicians in the United States are uniquely positioned to manage chronic pain because their professional philosophy embraces the biopsychosocial model and they are trained in the use of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to complement conventional medical care. This narrative review provides current perspectives on the osteopathic approach to chronic pain management, i

Osteopathic manipulative treatment for allopathic physicians: piloting a longitudinal curriculum.

CONTEXT: Under the Accreditation for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) single accreditation system, there is likely to be increasing interest and opportunity for teaching osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to allopathic residents and residency faculty. When learning OMT, allopathic physicians (MDs) have distinct needs compared with osteopathic medical students. For example, MDs already have a foundation in anatomy and medical vocabulary, but incorporating an osteopathic approach to patient care may require a paradigm shift. Thus, a unique approach to osteopathic education for MDs in res
