BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: ORN is a postradiation complication that has been well-documented in the medical literature. Most cases in the head and neck have been described in the mandible or larynx. Only a handful of cases in the hyoid bone are documented, all in the clinical literature. Our purpose is to present the clinical and imaging features of ORN involving the hyoid bone.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present a case series of 13 patients with imaging findings highly suggestive of hyoid ORN after radiation therapy for head and neck cancers, in which we observed progressive features of hyoid di

Pentoxifylline has been used to treat complications related to fibrosis for over 20 years. Formerly used to treat those after radiotherapy such as osteoradionecrosis (ORN), it is now being tried for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), which can occur after prolonged use of bisphosphonates. We review theories on the formation of fibrosis in patients with ORN, discuss the pharmacology of pentoxifylline and vitamin E, and report published outcomes. To our knowledge no prospective randomised controlled trial has investigated the benefits of these agents in cases of ORN, but report

OBJECTIVES: Osteoradionecrosis is one of the most serious and devastating complications of radiotherapy. The proper management of osteoradionecrosis is currently undetermined. The objective of this study is to evaluate the treatment results of a systematic approach to osteoradionecrosis.
STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study of a systematic approach to osteoradionecrosis in the head and neck area was undertaken.
METHODS: From July 1993 to June 1998, 33 cases of osteoradionecrosis in the head and neck area were treated using a systematic approach that combined sequestrectomy and hyperbaric oxygen

BACKGROUND: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is an uncommon and debilitating consequence of head and neck radiotherapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been advocated for prophylaxis prior to performing dentoalveolar procedures. The aim of this study was to evaluate a prophylactic HBOT protocol and describe the outcomes of susceptible individuals.
METHODS: A retrospective audit of adults who attended the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department at the Royal Adelaide Hospital (South Australia) who received dental extractions with a history of radiotherapy to the jaws from 2008 to 2020. Data i

BACKGROUND: Base of tongue cancer incidence and patient survival is increasing why treatment sequelae becomes exceedingly important. Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a late adverse effect of radiotherapy and brachytherapy (BT) could be a risk factor. Brachytherapy is used in three out of six health care regions in Sweden.
AIMS: Investigate if patients treated in regions using BT show an increased risk for ORN and whether brachytherapy has any impact on overall survival.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used data from the Swedish Head and Neck Cancer Register between 2008-2014. Due to the nonrandomized na

Mandibular osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is one of the most serious complications of radiotherapy of the head and neck, and is characterised by hypoxia, hypovascularisation, and hypocellularity. Periosteal free flaps have intrinsic osteogenic, and extrinsic neoangiogenic, properties that are related to the periosteum. Our objective was to present our experience with the use of periosteal free flaps in the treatment of ORN (Notani class I or II) that are refractory to conservative management or have a large area of bone (≥2 cm) exposed. We organised a single-centre, retrospective study between 2003

OBJECTIVES: To perform a systematic review evaluating etiologies, associated complications, and management of osteoradionecrosis of the temporal bone (ORNTB).
METHODS: The authors searched the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases for relevant literature. Patient demographics, etiologies, treatments, and other clinical characteristics were obtained. Treatment success was defined as resolution of symptoms at last follow-up. Results were reported using the preferred reporting systems for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines.
RESULTS: Thirty-eight studies encompassi

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) in the head and neck area is the most devastating long-term complication of radiotherapy, with slow progression and inability to heal spontaneously. ORN can lead to intolerable pain, fractures, and sequestration of devitalized bone and fistulae, making oral feeding impossible and causing facial deformation. In spite of its notorious reputation over at least 90 years, the precise pathogenesis of ORN has not been fully clarified, which has led to obstacles in the management of the disease. Several theories about its pathogenesis have been formulated, and radiation-induce

BACKGROUND: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is one of the most serious complications of radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). ORN rarely occurs in the external auditory canal.
METHODS: This is a retrospective review of 11 NPC patients who had ORN in the external auditory canal. Exposed necrotic bone over the external auditory canal was the diagnostic hallmark. Three patients wore hearing aids and 2 had had previous otological surgery. ORN was detected between 2 and 15 years after radiation therapy (mean 8 years). The radiation dose ranged from 6480 to 8460 rads in 8 patients.
RESULTS: The

PURPOSE: This study was undertaken to evaluate a new method in the treatment of mandibular osteoradionecrosis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eight patients, seven male and one female, with a mean age of 64 years (range, 43 to 67 years), suffering from osteoradionecrosis of the mandible, two bilaterally and six unilaterally, were treated. Five initially had hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) followed by sequestrectomy, and three had sequestrectomy alone. Because healing failed to occur, all patients were treated by removal of the necrotic bone in the affected part of the mandible and filling the defect with comp

The histories of 14 patients in whom osteoradionecrosis developed were compared with those of 28 patients who had similar tumors and/or treatment and were not afflicted with osteoradionecrosis. 1. Fourteen of 15 episodes of bone complications occurred in the mandible, and 70% occurred within 1 year after the completion of radiation therapy. 2. A high dose of radiation, with conventional fractionation, did not specifically predispose patients to osteoradionecrosis. Fifty percent of the ORN patients actually received a total dose of 6000 rad or less. Combined radiation therapy and surgery did no

Cases of delayed osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the anterior skull base have unique management considerations. A 59-year-old woman with a history of basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the sinonasal cavity with intracranial extension through the anterior skull base developed delayed radiation sequelae of anterior skull base ORN. She underwent an initial endoscopic resection in 2011 with persistent disease that required an anterior craniofacial resection with left medial maxillectomy in 2012. She had a radiologic gross total resection with microscopic residual disease at the histologic margins pro

INTRODUCTION: Osteoradionecrosis is a rare and debilitating risk of definitive chemoradiotherapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. It is difficult to distinguish between osteoradionecrosis and recurrent or progressive disease, as clinical and radiologic features may be similar. Our aim was to compare the clinical presentation and radiologic features of osteonecrosis with those of recurrent or progressive cancer.
METHODS: We conducted a single-center case series of 19 patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma diagnosed between 2011 and 2019 who subsequently developed clinica

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is described as a disease with exposed, nonviable bone that fails to heal spontaneously or by means of conservative treatment after radiotherapy in at least 3 months. Though traditional theories in the early stage including hypoxic-hypocellular-hypovascular and fibro-atrophic in addition to new findings such as ferroptosis were put forward to explain the mechanisms of the osteoradionecrosis, the etiology of ORN is still unclear. With the high rate of occurrence in the head and neck area, especially in the mandible, this disease can disrupt the shape and function of the
