Examining the Effects of Ostracism and Overinclusion in the Eating Disorder Binge Spectrum: Evidence From a Controlled Cyberball Task.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders (ED), including bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED), are characterised by dysfunctional eating behaviours and maladaptive emotional regulation tied to concerns about body image. This study investigates the emotional and cognitive impacts of social exclusion and overinclusion on individuals with ED using the Cyberball task, a computerised simulation of social interaction, to examine the role of early maladaptive schemas (EMS) in these responses. METHOD: The sample included 124 women: 34 with BN, 26 with BED, and 64 controls, assigned to either an os

Cyber-ostracism and academic engagement among Chinese university students: a three-wave longitudinal study of mediating and moderating mechanisms.

Cyber-ostracism has become an important challenge in digitally mediated university life, yet its influence on academic engagement remains insufficiently understood. This study examined the longitudinal relationship between cyber-ostracism and academic engagement among Chinese university students, as well as the mediating roles of self-esteem and social avoidance and the moderating roles of social support and psychological resilience. A three-wave survey was conducted with 450 undergraduates from a provincial public university in China. Structural equation modeling showed that cyber-ostracism a

Non-suicidal self-injury and digital ostracism: a novel smartphone-based paradigm capturing real-time responses to social media exclusion.

BACKGROUND: Ostracism on social media is a common and emotionally salient stressor. However, its moment-to-moment psychological and behavioral consequences, remain poorly understood in individuals with Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). METHODS: Using an Instagram-mimicking smartphone platform (Socializapp) coupled with Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), we examined responses to experimentally manipulated peer feedback across 7 days in three groups: healthy Controls (HC; n = 20), NSSI without BPD (NSSI; n = 18), and comorbid BPD+NSSI (n = 17). The Relationship Between Ostracism and Mental Health Issues Among College Students: The Chain Mediating Role of Rumination and Smartphone Addiction.

Mental health issues, particularly symptoms of anxiety and depression, have become increasingly prominent among college students, with negative experiences such as ostracism identified as important correlates. However, the potential pathways linking ostracism to mental health issues remain to be further explored. By incorporating rumination and smartphone addiction, this study aimed to examine the associations among ostracism, rumination, smartphone addiction, and mental health issues in college students. A cross-sectional, self-reported questionnaire survey was conducted among 632 college stu

From Leader Narcissistic Rivalry to Unethical Pro-Organizational Behavior: The Mediating Role of Workplace Ostracism and the Moderating Role of Underdog Expectations.

Unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPB) is gaining scholarly attention due to its harmful consequences, yet limited research explains how employees' perceptions of leaders' personality traits drive such behavior. Drawing on conservation of resources theory and the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Concept, this study examined whether and how perceived leader narcissistic rivalry predicts employee UPB. We argue that leaders high in narcissistic rivalry devalue and exclude others, increasing workplace ostracism. Ostracism, in turn, depletes employees' psychological resources and motivates

Divergent emotional and autonomic responses to Cyberball in patients with opioid use disorder on opioid agonist treatment.

The perception of social exclusion among patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) could be affected by long-term opioid use. This study explores the emotional and cardiac autonomic responses to an experience of ostracism in a sample of participants with OUD on opioid agonist treatment (OAT). Twenty patients with OUD and twenty healthy controls (HC) performed a ball-tossing game (Cyberball) with two conditions: Inclusion and Ostracism. We measured self-reported ratings of perceived threat towards one's fundamental needs and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) immediately after the game and 10 min

When Silence Is Not Golden: Why Acknowledgment Matters Even When Being Excluded.

Following ostracism, individuals are highly sensitive to social cues. Here we investigate whether and when minimal acknowledgment can improve need satisfaction following an ostracism experience. In four studies, participants were either ostracized during Cyberball (Studies 1 and 2) or through a novel apartment-application paradigm (Studies 3 and 4). To signal acknowledgment following ostracism, participants were either thrown a ball a few times at the end of the Cyberball game, or received a message that was either friendly, neutral, or hostile in the apartment-application paradigm. Both forms

Feeling excluded no matter what? Bias in the processing of social participation in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) feel ostracized even when they are included. This might be due to a biased processing of social participation in BPD. We examined whether patients with BPD also process social overinclusion in a biased manner, i.e., whether they feel ostracized even when the degree of social participation is increased. METHODS: An EEG-compatible version of Cyberball was used to investigate the effects of inclusion and overinclusion (33% vs. 45% ball receipt) on perceived ostracism, need threat and P3 amplitude, an EEG indicator for expectancy vio

From exclusion to inclusion: How spiritual leadership shapes workplace relationships.

BackgroundWorkplace ostracism is a negative social stressor that is associated with psychological distress, work stress, and poor employee well-being. Leadership behavior is an important determinant of social inclusion in the workplace; yet there is a lack of evidence on how and under what conditions spiritual leadership can counteract ostracism, especially in a highly regulated work context.ObjectiveThis study examines the association between spiritual leadership and workplace ostracism, with justice orientation explored as a moderating variable in this association. Additionally, job social s

Higher Social Rejection Sensitivity in Opioid-Dependent Patients Is Related to Smaller Insula Gray Matter Volume: A Voxel-Based Morphometric Study.

Opioid-dependent patients are highly sensitized to negative social feedback, and increased social rejection sensitivity was linked to adverse treatment outcome, but its neurobiological underpinnings have not been understood yet. The present study investigated gray matter (GM) volume differences between 19 opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) patients and 20 healthy controls using magnetic resonance imaging and voxel-based morphometry. Associations of GM volumes with subjective feelings of exclusion and inclusion during a social ostracism (Cyberball) paradigm, with rejection sensitivity, social i

The predictive value of the early maladaptive schemas in social situations in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) show an impairment in the recognition and expression of emotions, as well as an increased sensitivity to being socially excluded, and rigid maladaptive schemas. The Cyberball paradigm is a virtual ball-toss game that can simulate social exclusion and inclusion. Our aim is to evaluate how cognitive schemas can influence the perception and the evaluation of the experiences of social inclusion/exclusion. METHODS: Thirty-two AN patients and 34 healthy controls completed a psychological evaluation and were randomly assigned to exclusion or overinclus

'Bioethics' is subordinate to morality in Japan.

Disputes over brain death and euthanasia are used to illuminate the question whether there really is a Japanese way of thinking in bioethics. In Japanese thought, a person does not exist as an individual but as a member of the family, community or society. I describe these features of Japanese society as 'mutual dependency'. In this society, an act is 'good' and 'right' when it is commonly done, and it is 'bad' and 'wrong' when nobody else does it. Thus, outsiders to this ring of mutual dependency encounter ostracism. One feature of this society is a lack of open discussion which leads to the

Resting-state neural correlates of individual differences in ignored experience and its deleterious effect.

Uncovering the neural mechanisms of ostracism experience (including its subclasses of excluded and ignored experiences) is important. However, the resting-state functional brain substrates responsible for individual differences in ostracism experience and its negative effects remain largely undefined. This study explored these issues in a sample of 198 Chinese college students by assessing the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations and functional connectivity. The findings indicated a positive correlation between ignored experience and the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations in the right

Evaluating the morality of violence against robots.

The present study explored human moral perceptions of robots and examined how these perceptions vary based on the anthropomorphic features of the agent, the type of harm inflicted, and how the robot reacts to aversive stimuli. An online survey comprised first-year psychology students (N = 234) and participants recruited via social media (N = 63). Participants watched four videos depicting harmful or aversive scenarios containing a humanoid (NAO) or machine-like robot (Roomba). Scenarios included turning the robot off, physically abusing the robot, verbally abusing the robot and socially ostrac
