Influence of ontogenetic development, temperature, and pCO2 on otolith calcium carbonate polymorph composition in sturgeons.

Changes to calcium carbonate (CaCO3) biomineralization in aquatic organisms is among the many predicted effects of climate change. Because otolith (hearing/orientation structures in fish) CaCO3 precipitation and polymorph composition are controlled by genetic and environmental factors, climate change may be predicted to affect the phenotypic plasticity of otoliths. We examined precipitation of otolith polymorphs (aragonite, vaterite, calcite) during early life history in two species of sturgeon, Lake Sturgeon, (Acipenser fulvescens) and White Sturgeon (A. transmontanus), using quantitative X-r

[Interlabyrinthine asymmetry, vestibular dysfunction and space motion sickness].

The data available suggest that a disorder in the labyrinthine paired function can be regarded as a factor responsible for the initiation and development of space motion sickness. This concept is based on the assumption that in the norm the vestibular function is to a certain extent asymmetric which is made for by a compensatory center in the central nervous system. Exposure to an unusual space environment leads to a disorder of this compensation and development of a "new" vestibular asymmetry. This exposure involves: elimination of the difference in the weight of otolith membranes, disorder o

Can migraine damage the inner ear?

BACKGROUND: Auditory and vestibular symptoms and signs are common in patients with migraine, yet little is known about the pathogenesis of these symptoms and signs. OBJECTIVE: To perform clinicopathological correlation in a patient with migraine, sudden deafness, and delayed endolymphatic hydrops. METHODS: A patient with long-standing migraine with aura developed sudden hearing loss in the left ear at the age of 50 years and Ménière disease on the right side at age 73. At age 76, he had a flurry of sudden drop attacks typical of otolithic crisis. He died of unrelated causes at age 81. The br

A model for vestibular function in altered gravitational states.

During evolution, the vestibular organ was made to serve mainly two purposes: 1) to guide eye movements during sharp turns, so that the point of fixation in the visual field can be kept steady, a function accomplished by the semicircular canal system and 2) to indicate the terrestrial vertical, so that upright posture and gait can be maintained even in the dark. The otolith system serves the latter purpose. Since the function of the semicircular canal system does not depend on gravity, it is not grossly disturbed by gravitational levels different from 1 g. The proper function of the otolith sy

Vestibular atelectasis.

The temporal bone collection at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary includes specimens from several cases in which the only reasonable explanation for vertigo is collapse of the walls of the ampullae and utricle, a disorder we have termed vestibular atelectasis. The clinical histories and temporal bone studies support the existence of a primary type that may have a paroxysmal or insidious onset, and a secondary type that occurs in association with other inner ear disorders. The principal clinical symptom is chronic unsteadiness, precipitated or aggravated by head movement, and sometimes as

Vestibular drop attacks in Ménière's disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis of frequency, correlates and consequences.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular drop attacks (VDA), also called Tumarkin otolith crises as a complication of Ménière's disease (MD) were first described in 1936. Nevertheless, a clearer understanding of their prevalence and manifestations is needed. THE OBJECTIVE: of this review is to determine the frequency, correlates and consequences of VDA in MD. METHOD: Three databases were searched (i.e., MEDLINE, PubMed and Google Academia). A total of 1,791 references were identified, of which 18 studies were considered eligible. There was a large variation in the definition of VDA used in the studies. RESUL

A longitudinal study of unilateral Ménière's disease and clinical evolutionary models.

OBJECTIVE: The heterogeneity of Ménière's disease is presently defined by a variety of subtypes. This study introduced three different subtypes of unilateral Ménière's disease based on the evolution of vertigo crises from their inception. METHOD: A longitudinal descriptive study of 327 unilateral Ménière's disease patients was performed. In a subgroup of patients followed from the onset of the disease, 3 subtypes of unilateral Ménière's disease were defined according to the vertiginous crises suffered during the first 10 years of the disorder. RESULTS: Data was available for 87 patients with

Changes in the Results of the Subjective Visual Vertical Test After Endolymphatic Sac Drainage for Intractable Meniere's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate otolithic function before and after endolymphatic sac drainage (ELSD) for Meniere's disease (MD) by using the subjective visual vertical test (SVV) in the upright and tilted positions. METHODS: Eighteen patients with definite unilateral MD diagnosed in accordance with the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery criteria in 1995 and Barany Society criteria in 2015 were included. SVV in the upright position and the head-tilt position was performed preoperatively and on postoperative days 1, 5, 8, 28, and 112. Changes in the results of SVV in the uprigh

Peripheral patterns of terminal innervation of vestibular primary afferent neurons projecting to the vestibulocerebellum in the gerbil.

Retrograde transganglionic labeling techniques with biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) were used to examine the terminal field structure and topographical patterns of innervation within the vestibular sensory end organs of vestibular primary afferent neurons projecting to the cerebellar uvula/nodulus and flocculus lobules in the gerbil. Robust, dark labeling in the cristae ampullares suggested that the vast majority of the terminals of afferent neurons were of the dimorphic type. The majority (94% to the uvula/nodulus and 100% to the flocculus) innervates the peripheral zones of each of the thre

Morphometry of fish inner ear otoliths after development at 3g hypergravity.

Size and asymmetry (size difference between the left and right sides) of inner ear otoliths of larval cichlid fish were determined after a long-term stay in moderate hypergravity conditions (3g; centrifuge), in the course of which the animals completed their ontogenetic development from hatch to freely swimming. Neither the normal morphogenetic development nor the timely onset and gain of performance of swimming behaviour were impaired by the experimental conditions. However, both utricular and saccular otoliths (lapilli and sagittae, respectively) were significantly smaller after hyper-g expo

Alternative habitat use strategies in the catadromous Chelon ramada inferred by otolith microchemistry.

Otolith chemical analyses of Sr, Ba, and Ca composition were conducted on thinlip grey mullet (Chelon ramada) collected from a freshwater (n = 45) and an estuarine (n = 55) site in the Mondego River (central Portugal) using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) to investigate the species' habitat use patterns. The reconstruction of habitats used provides evidence for a behavioral continuum along the marine-freshwater environments in the Atlantic region. Overall, the estuarine environment is the habitat with the highest residency, yet four distinct behavioral pr

Bilateral vestibulopathy.

The leading symptoms of bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP) are postural imbalance and unsteadiness of gait that worsens in darkness and on uneven ground. There are typically no symptoms while sitting or lying under static conditions. A minority of patients also have movement-induced oscillopsia, in particular while walking. The diagnosis of BVP is based on a bilaterally reduced or absent function of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). This deficit is diagnosed for the high-frequency range of the angular VOR by a bilaterally pathologic bedside head impulse test (HIT) and for the low-frequency range

[Central vestibular syndromes].

The aim of this topic is on one hand to pick out the semiological features which can quickly show the way of central nervous system lesions related to the vestibular system and on the other hand to describe these main central vestibular syndromes. A particular attention is carried to central otolithics syndromes which often remain undiagnosed. They induce imbalance, non rotatory vertigo, intolerance to linear acceleration and most often there is no nystagmus on examination. Neurophysiological diagram are restricted to a minimum useful to the clinician.

Detection of infrasound and linear acceleration in fishes.

Fishes have an acute sensitivity to extremely low-frequency linear acceleration, or infrasound, even down to below 1 Hz. The otolith organs are the sensory system responsible for this ability. The hydrodynamic noise generated by swimming fishes is mainly in the infrasound range, and may be important in courtship and prey predator interactions. Intense infrasound has a deterring effect on some species, and has a potential in acoustic barriers. We hypothesize that the pattern of ambient infrasound in the oceans may be used for orientation in migratory fishes, and that pelagic fishes may detect c

Drop attacks with Menière's syndrome.

We report the clinical features of 12 patients with drop attacks associated with Meniere's syndrome. Each described a sensation of being pushed, thrown, or knocked to the ground or a sudden illusion of movement of the environment that led to a fall. These episodes were not accompanied by symptoms of their typical attacks of Meniere's syndrome. The drop attacks occurred early and late in the course of the disease; they were the initial manifestation in 1 patient. In the majority the episodes spontaneously remitted, although Meniere's syndrome continued to progress. These attacks probably result

Frequency and phase effects on cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs) to air-conducted sound.

Few previous studies of tuning using air-conducted (AC) stimuli and the cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) have compensated for the effects of middle ear (ME) attenuation. Zhang et al. (Exp Brain Res 213:111-116, 2011a) who did allow for ME effects were able to show a secondary peak around 100 Hz for the ocular VEMP (oVEMP). Recently, it has become clear that the otolith afferents responsible for the cVEMP and oVEMP differ and thus the nature of tuning may be more related to the reflex studied determining which otolith receptors are activated rather than the properties of th

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is characterized by positional vertigo (brief attacks of rotatory vertigo triggered by head position changes in the direction of gravity) and is the most common peripheral cause of vertigo. There are two types of BPPV pathophysiology: canalolithiasis and cupulolithiasis. In canalolithiasis, otoconial debris is detached from the otolithic membrane and floats freely within the endolymph of the canal. In cupulolithiasis, the otoconial debris released from the otolithic membrane settles on the cupula of the semicircular canal and the specific gravity of
