Human North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) attack.

As a result of the successful restoration and conservation programs deployed by state and federal agencies, populations of the North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) are increasing in many states. Recreational activities such as swimming, boating, and fishing increase the likelihood of human interactions with this charismatic, nonendangered mustelid. Otters tend to avoid areas of high human activity, occur at low population densities, and in some habitats in the United States have not recovered from population declines. Therefore, interactions with humans are rare, and aggressive encou

Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra), a definitive host for Dirofilaria immitis.

A mature male and a mature female Dirofilaria immitis were found in the right ventricle of the heart of a naturally infected 2-yr-old male Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) that had died of severe lung congestion at a zoo in South Korea. Both developing embryos and microfilariae were present in the uterus of the female D. immitis. Although circulating microfilariae were not detected in blood or tissue, the Eurasian otter may serve as a definitive host for D. immitis.

Encephalomyelitis associated with a Sarcocystis neurona-like organism in a sea otter.

An adult female sea otter housed for 5 years in an outdoor habitat in an aquarium developed signs of neurologic disease. Bilateral caudal paresis was evident initially and other neurologic signs consistent with CNS disease developed rapidly. Diagnostic work-up included CBC, serum biochemical analyses, determination of serum antibody titers, radiography of the vertebral column, CSF analysis, muscle biopsy, computed tomography of the brain, and assays for mercury, lead, and thiamine. A tentative diagnosis of encephalitis caused by a Sarcocystis neurona-like organism was made on the basis of dete

Does human proximity affect antibody prevalence in marine-foraging river otters (Lontra canadensis)?

The investigation of diseases of free-ranging river otters (Lontra canadensis) is a primary conservation priority for this species; however, very little is known about diseases of river otters that forage in marine environments. To identify and better understand pathogens that could be important to marine-foraging river otters, other wildlife species, domestic animals, and humans and to determine if proximity to human population could be a factor in disease exposure, serum samples from 55 free-ranging marine-foraging river otters were tested for antibodies to selected pathogens. Thirty-five an

Clinical pathology and assessment of pathogen exposure in southern and Alaskan sea otters.

The southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis) population in California (USA) and the Alaskan sea otter (E. lutris kenyoni) population in the Aleutian Islands (USA) chain have recently declined. In order to evaluate disease as a contributing factor to the declines, health assessments of these two sea otter populations were conducted by evaluating hematologic and/or serum biochemical values and exposure to six marine and terrestrial pathogens using blood collected during ongoing studies from 1995 through 2000. Samples from 72 free-ranging Alaskan, 78 free-ranging southern, and (for pathogen exp

Lead sources to California sea otters: industrial inputs circumvent natural lead biodepletion mechanisms.

Lead levels (as Pb/Ca atom ratios) and stable isotopic compositions were measured in teeth of preindustrial and contemporary California sea otters (Enhydra lutris) to determine if postindustrial changes had occurred in the magnitude and source of accumulated lead. Lead/calcium atom ratios (means +/- SD) in teeth of some contemporary animals (110 +/- 37 x 10(-8), n = 3) were significantly elevated compared to levels in other contemporary (13 +/- 6.0 x 10(-8), n = 4) and preindustrial (7.3 +/- 3.9 x 10(-8), n = 6) otters. The isotopic ratios (means +/- 2 sigma means) revealed a change in the sou

Pathogen Surveillance in Free-ranging Giant Otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) in Three Ecoregions of Brazil.

The giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) is the largest river otter in the world and globally classified as endangered. Little information is available regarding pathogen exposure in this species due to low densities and the challenges associated with capturing individuals in the wild. Serological assays were used to investigate exposure of 10 free-ranging giant otters from different Brazilian ecoregions to canine distemper virus (CDV), parvovirus, rabies virus, Leptospira spp., smooth Brucella, and Toxoplasma gondii. Molecular assays were conducted to assess the presence of Hepatozoon spp., C

Outbreak of canine parvovirus 2b and Clostridium difficile infection in Asian small-clawed otters.

A concurrent outbreak of infection by canine parvovirus 2b (CPV-2b) and Clostridium difficile producing A and/or B toxins occurred in Asian small-clawed otters (Amblonyx cinereus). The 5 clinically affected otters were 6- to 24-mo-old intact females that had severe diarrhea, dehydration, were acutely comatose, and died 1-4 d after the onset of clinical signs. Postmortem examination was performed in 3 of 7 otters. Macroscopically, the small intestine was diffusely reddened and contained red-to-brown, malodorous, watery digesta without formed feces (3 of 3). Histologic examination identified los

Trapping and handling of North American river otters (Lontra canadensis) in a managed marsh.

North American river otters (Lontra canadensis) were trapped in a managed marsh in northern California between July and November of 1998. Five trap types using several set configurations were utilized in this study. Otters were successfully captured with minimal injury and a relatively high trap rate (1 capture per 48 trap nights), with the use of No. 1.5 and No. 1.75 double-coil spring traps, and No. 11 double long spring traps on short chains in blind land sets, or in bank sets on one-way cables leading to land-buried stakes. Only 3 of 14 captures incurred more than minimal injuries, and all

Concurrent pancreatic exocrine hyperplasia and adenomas in a Eurasian otter with pleuropneumonia and urolithiasis.

The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is a semi-aquatic mammal classified as near-threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. There have been few reports on their diseases, especially neoplasms. Here we describe exocrine nodular hyperplasia and adenomas in the pancreas, along with suppurative pleuropneumonia and urolithiasis, in an aged captive Eurasian otter. Pancreatic adenomas are rare in animals, and coexistence of adenoma and nodular hyperplasia in the pancreas has not been reported previously in veterinary medicine, to our knowledge.

Suspected fibrocartilaginous embolus in Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus).

An 11-year-old neutered male Asian small-clawed otter fell down the stairs while sleeping, after which it developed left-sided paralysis. Initial treatment involved once daily administration of prednisolone at 0.5 mg/kg. Despite slight clinical sign improvements by day 10, paralysis persisted. MRI (T2WI) identified a well-defined, hyper-intense lesion on the left side within the spinal cord at the C2-3 intervertebral level. Based on CT and MRI findings, fibrocartilaginous embolus (FCE) was suspected. Prednisolone was then tapered and by day 23 of illness, the otter was able to walk normally, s

Primary intracranial fibrosarcoma in a southern sea otter Enhydra lutris nereis.

Southern sea otters Enhydra lutris nereis, a threatened marine mammal species, face numerous environmental and infectious disease challenges in their native habitat of coastal California, USA. However, there are few published cases describing neoplasia in sea otters despite their relatively long life span when cared for in aquarium settings. An 18 yr old neutered male southern sea otter, born and raised in human care, presented with an acute onset of seizures and dull mentation. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head revealed a large, central brain lesion. After no improvement with treatment,

Effects of petroleum on mink applied as a model for reproductive success in sea otters.

Ranch-reared mink (Mustela vison) were used as a model in an experimental trial to investigate the potential effects of exposure to two petroleum products on sea otters (Enhydra lutris). Mink were exposed either dermally on one occasion 60 days prior to breeding or via low level contamination of their diets daily from 60 days prior to breeding (January 1994) until weaning of kits (June 1994). For dermal exposure, we placed mink in either a slick of Alaskan North Slope crude oil (n = 24) or bunker C fuel oil (n = 24) on sea water or sea water alone (n = 10) for 1 min. For dietary exposure, we f

Distribution of metals in tissues of beaver, raccoon and otter from Ontario, Canada.

Mercury and selenium concentrations were positively correlated in liver tissue of beaver, raccoon and otter from an undisturbed watershed in south central Ontario. Selenium accumulation in piscivorous mammals may represent a protective mechanism against methylmercury toxicity to animals exposed to high mercury levels in their diet. This paper also reports the levels of several other metals in tissues of three wild fur-bearing mammal species.

A survey of abnormal repetitive behaviors in North American river otters housed in zoos.

Stereotypic behaviors, indicating poor welfare and studied in a variety of species (especially carnivores), appear related to characteristics of current and past environments. Although North American river otters (Lontra canadensis) often develop abnormal, repetitive, possibly stereotypic behaviors, no published reports describe otter housing and management or characterize how these variables relate to abnormal repetitive behavior (ARB) occurrence. The first author developed surveys to gather data on housing, individual history, management, and the prevalence of ARBs in otters housed in facili

Mustelid herpesvirus-2, a novel herpes infection in northern sea otters (Enhydra lutris kenyoni).

Oral ulcerations and plaques with epithelial eosinophilic intranuclear inclusions were observed in northern sea otters (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) that died or were admitted for rehabilitation after the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill (EVOS) in Alaska, USA. Transmission electron microscopy demonstrated the presence of herpesviral virions. Additionally, a serologic study from 2004 to 2005 found a high prevalence of exposure to a herpesvirus in live-captured otters. Tissues from 29 otters after the EVOS and nasal swabs from 83 live-captured otters in the Kodiak Archipelago were tested for herpesviral D

Surgical implantation of intra-abdominal radiotransmitters in marine otters (Lontra felina) in central Chile.

Six free-ranging marine otters (Lontra felina) were livetrapped on the central coast of Chile and implanted with specially designed radiotransmitters as part of a spatial ecology study. Marine otters frequent the rocky seashore, often squeezing their narrow bodies through cracks and crevices and grooming themselves on the rocks. They are also among the smallest of the otter species, weighing between 3.4 kg and 4.5 kg. For these reasons, the transmitter used was small, rectangular, and flat, measuring 3.5 x 3.2 x 1.0 cm. They were implanted using a ventral midline approach to minimize contact b

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) in England and Wales.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is found on all continents and can infect all endothermic vertebrates. Toxoplasmosis is a globally important zoonosis with potentially devastating health impacts both for humans and a range of domestic and wild species. The World Health Organisation have repeatedly recommended the collection of accurate epidemiological data for T. gondii, yet despite recognised links between infection of wildlife, domestic animals and humans, seroprevalence in wild species is rarely monitored. Here, serological investigation using the Gold Standard Sabin-Feldman Dye Test was used

Exposure to domoic acid is an ecological driver of cardiac disease in southern sea otters✰.

Harmful algal blooms produce toxins that bioaccumulate in the food web and adversely affect humans, animals, and entire marine ecosystems. Blooms of the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia can produce domoic acid (DA), a toxin that most commonly causes neurological disease in endothermic animals, with cardiovascular effects that were first recognized in southern sea otters. Over the last 20 years, DA toxicosis has caused significant morbidity and mortality in marine mammals and seabirds along the west coast of the USA. Identifying DA exposure has been limited to toxin detection in biological fluids using
