[Micronutrient consumption and overweight: is there a relationship?].

INTRODUCTION: In past decades, the growth in obesity has been associated with changes in the lifestyle of the population, including comprehensive dietary changes, especially in the intake of micronutrients. OBJECTIVE: To describe micronutrient intake and review its consequences on nutritional status. METHODS: A literature review was performed covering domestic and international articles published over the past 11 years, on the SciELO, LILACS, MEDLINE and governmental databases, using descriptors such as "micronutrients", "food consumption", "excess weight", "health", "nutritional status" in

Drug treatment of the overweight patient.

Three medications with approval for long-term use in the treatment of obesity are currently available in the United States. Sibutramine (U.S. Food and Drug Administration [FDA] approved in 1997), orlistat (FDA approved in 1999), and rimonabant (available in Europe and given FDA approvable status in 2006 and expected to be marketed in 2007) represent modern approaches to medications used adjunctively for weight management. As demonstrated in large clinical trials of 2 to 4 years' duration, these medications significantly increase weight loss compared with placebo; weight loss with these drugs r

The consequences of childhood overweight and obesity.

Researchers are only gradually becoming aware of the gravity of the risk that overweight and obesity pose for children's health. In this article Stephen Daniels documents the heavy toll that the obesity epidemic is taking on the health of the nation's children. He discusses both the immediate risks associated with childhood obesity and the longer-term risk that obese children and adolescents will become obese adults and suffer other health problems as a result. Daniels notes that many obesity-related health conditions once thought applicable only to adults are now being seen in children and wi

[Overweight and obesity: review and update].

UNLABELLED: Obesity is an epidemic with important health repercussions in addition to high treatment-related costs. Between 2006 and 2007 the WHO developed new assessment tools, which aren't being globally used. In fact, there is no unified problem management across the hemisphere. OBJECTIVES: To update obesity epidemiology, to promote application of WHO’s standards, to review new findings on physiopathology (i.e., fatty tissue as endocrine organ, intestinal microbiota), to update epidemiological information, and to provide management guidelines that can be integrated in clinical care. Genetic factors for overweight and CAD.

Obesity is a growing clinical problem reaching epidemic proportions in developed and developing countries. It is associated with several comorbidities including cardiovascular diseases. There is strong evidence for the association of excess weight and established metabolic risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD) such as hyperlipidemia, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. In addition, obesity may promote cardiovascular disease independent of these factors, possibly via hormones secreted by adipocytes, promotion of proinflammatory processes or other as yet unrecognized mechanisms. [Overweight and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease].

The increase in the prevalence of obesity is paralleled by an increase in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and several mechanisms link GERD and obesity, so weight loss is a cornerstone in the treatment of GERD. Sustained weight loss often requires surgery, and fundoplication is the first surgical choice among normal weight patients with reflux; however, reflux complications increase with increasing BMI. Therefore, patients with obesity and GERD should be treated with gastric bypass surgery. The aim of this article is to discuss the relationship between overweight and GERD and outline

[Slipped capital femoral epiphysis and overweight].

The slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is defined as a nontraumatic epiphyseal separation and slipping of the proximal femoral epiphysis, which usually occurs during the adolescent growth spurt. Slipping of the upper femoral epiphysis may be classified as acute, chronic, and acute on chronic. The etiology of the disease is still not fully understood but seems to be multifactorial. The typical SCFE during puberty has to be differentiated from the atypical form, which may be associated with an endocrinological disorder or with its therapy. The typical SCFE may be found in male patients, wi

Sibutramine in overweight/obese hypertensive patients.

Obesity and hypertension are closely associated risk factors for cardiovascular disease. An increase in body mass index is commonly associated with an increase in blood pressure and weight reduction is recommended as the principal intervention in the obese hypertensive patient. Sibutramine therapy, as part of a programme of diet and exercise, can help achieve marked weight reduction and improve metabolic and other cardiovascular risk factors. In hypertensive patients, weight loss induced by sibutramine has also been found to reduce blood pressure. Studies have shown that in the obese, well-con

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate 3 research questions: (1) Does a Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)-based counseling intervention reduce (milk) bottle use?; (2) Does this intervention reduce energy intake from bottles?; and (3) Does this intervention reduce the risk of a child being >85th percentile weight-for-length? STUDY DESIGN: Parents of n = 300 12-month-olds consuming >2 bottles/d were randomized to a bottle-weaning intervention or control group. Nutritionists at WIC Supplemental Feeding Program sites delivered the intervention. Researchers assessed dietary intake and beverage container use via

Overweight and obese children: mothers' strategies.

AIM: This paper reports a study exploring the strategies a group of mothers of overweight and obese children were using and planned to use in the future to assist their children to achieve a healthy weight. BACKGROUND: Over the past two decades, the prevalence of childhood obesity has grown exponentially to become a major public health concern. Extant literature suggests that childhood obesity is associated with a range of physical, social and psychological effects, including poor self-esteem, depression, social isolation, and cardio-vascular and other morbidity. Parents are known to be impor

Mediation of the association between maternal pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity and childhood overweight/obesity by birth anthropometry.

The mechanism through which developmental programming of offspring overweight/obesity following in utero exposure to maternal overweight/obesity operates is unknown but may operate through biologic pathways involving offspring anthropometry at birth. Thus, we sought to examine to what extent the association between in utero exposure to maternal overweight/obesity and childhood overweight/obesity is mediated by birth anthropometry. Analyses were conducted on a retrospective cohort with data obtained from one hospital system. A natural effects model framework was used to estimate the natural dir

Birth weight of a child and the occurrence of overweight and obesity in preschool and school age birth weight and overweight in children.

OBJECTIVE: Increasingly, studies say that both too low and excessive birth weight increase the risk of developing obesity. The study aimed to check whether there is a relationship between birth weight and the occurrence of overweight and parents' body weight in children aged 5, 10, and 15 y. METHODS: Out of 601 participants, 297 (51,2% ♀) were qualified for analysis, meeting the inclusion criteria for the study group. Participants were divided by their age at the time of the study into Group I (n=80 [51,2% ♀]) - aged 5 y old, Group II (n = 113 [51,6% ♀]) - 10 y, and Group III (n = 93 [50,5% ♀

Calcium supplementation for people with overweight or obesity.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a major health problem worldwide as it can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and insulin resistance. The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing worldwide across different age groups. There is evidence of an inverse relationship between calcium intake and body weight. The clinical relevance of a small reduction in body weight has been questioned. However, at a population level, a small effect could mitigate the observed global trends. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of calcium supplementation on weight loss in individuals living

Cancers attributable to overweight and obesity in Italy.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Overweight and obesity are associated with multiple cancers. We quantified the burden of cancer attributable to overweight and obesity in Italy. METHODS: We estimated sex- and cancer site-specific population attributable fractions (PAFs) combining relative risks (from recent meta-analyses) with national obesity prevalence data (from a large sample survey conducted in 2005, to account for a 15-year lag period). Using nationwide mortality statistics and cancer registries data, we estimated the number of cancer cases and deaths attributable to overweight and obesity in Italy i
