Dicephalous v. diprosopus sharks: record of a two-headed embryo of Galeus atlanticus and review of the literature.

As far as is known, this paper gives the first description of a two-headed shark embryo belonging to an oviparous species, Galeus atlanticus (Carcharhiniformes: Scyliorhinidae). The specimen was detected among 797 embryos intended for cardiovascular studies, which represents a defect incidence of 0·13%. Each head had a mouth, two eyes, a brain, a notochord and five gill openings on each side. The two heads fused behind the gills. On the single body, there were four anticipated dorsal fins, two anterior, right and left and two posterior, right and left. Ventrally, the specimen possessed two pai

A genome assembly and annotation for the Australian alpine skink Bassiana duperreyi using long-read technologies.

The eastern 3-lined skink (Bassiana duperreyi) inhabits the Australian high country in the southeast of the continent including Tasmania. It is a distinctive oviparous species because it undergoes sex reversal (from XX genotypic females to phenotypic males) at low incubation temperatures. We present a chromosome-scale genome assembly of a B. duperreyi XY male individual, constructed using PacBio HiFi and Oxford Nanopore Technologies long reads scaffolded using Illumina HiC data. The genome assembly length is 1.57 Gb with a scaffold N50 of 222 Mb, N90 of 26 Mb, 200 gaps, and 43.10% GC content.

Effects of trace metals on Bombus terrestris (Hymenoptera: Apidae) microcolony and excretion during larval development.

Trace metal pollution is an increasing threat to wildlife, driven by the growing demand for these elements in technologies. Because metals contaminate floral resources, they represent a major but poorly understood risk for bee communities, including social species such as bumble bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae). In particular, the sublethal consequences of metal exposure for bumble bee colony development remain scarcely documented, and the associated metal excretion process occurring at the larva-pupa interface in these holometabolous insects is still unclear. Here, we exposed queenless microcolonie

Reducing the impact of pesticides on biological control in Australian vineyards: pesticide mortality and fecundity effects on an indicator species, the predatory mite Euseius victoriensis (Acari: Phytoseiidae).

Laboratory bioassays on detached soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., leaves were used to test 23 fungicides, five insecticides, two acaricides, one herbicide, and two adjuvants on a key Australian predatory mite species Euseius victoriensis (Womersley) in "worst-case scenario" direct overspray assays. Zero- to 48-h-old juveniles, their initial food, and water supply were sprayed to runoff with a Potter tower; spinosad and wettable sulfur residues also were tested. Tests were standardized to deliver a pesticide dose comparable with commercial application of highest label rates at 1,000 liter/ha. C

Age-related changes in the gut microbiota of a long-lived seabird suggest divergence from mammalian models.

Gut microbiota plays key roles in shaping host development, immunity and physiology. The assembly of vertebrate gut microbiota during early life follows relatively predictable trajectories across several mammalian species, largely driven by maternal transmission routes. However, birds lack these transmission mechanisms owing to their oviparity, potentially leading to different age-related microbiota patterns. Here, we investigate gut microbiota variation in Atlantic puffin (Fratercula arctica) chicks and adults across six British populations spanning distinct marine regions using 16S rRNA ampl

Oxygen Limitation at the Larval Stage and the Evolution of Maternal Investment per Offspring in Aquatic Environments.

Oxygen limitation and surface area to volume relationships of the egg were long thought to constrain egg size in aquatic environments, but more recent evidence indicates that egg size per se does not influence oxygen availability to embryos. Here, we suggest that investment per offspring is nevertheless constrained in aquatic anamniotes by virtue of oxygen transport in free-living larvae. Drawing on the well-supported assumption that oxygen limitation is relatively pronounced in aquatic versus terrestrial environments and that oxygen limitation is particularly severe in warm aquatic environmen

Cross-species single-cell transcriptomic analyses reveal evolutionary conservation and diversification of ovarian tissues.

BACKGROUND: The ovary is a central female reproductive organ responsible for producing oocytes and secreting steroid hormones. To investigate the molecular similarities and potential evolutionary origins of the ovary across vertebrates, we integrated publicly available single-cell and single-nucleus transcriptomic data from nine species, including oviparous animals (fish and chicken) and viviparous mammals (mouse, rat, sheep, goat, yak, monkey, and human). RESULTS: We generated a multi-species ovarian atlas comprising 186,748 cells and identified nine cell types. Cross-species comparative ana

Hybridization events in Squamata support the viviparity-driven conflict hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: The rise of large language models (LLM) promises to widely impact healthcare providers and patients alike. As these tools reflect the biases of currently available data on the internet, there is a risk that increasing LLM use will proliferate these biases and affect information quality. This study aims to characterize the effects of different race, ethnicity, and gender modifiers in question prompts presented to three large language models (LLM) on the length and readability of patient education materials about myopia. METHODS: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot were provided a standard

Multiple mating, sperm storage, and mating preference in Aplysia californica.

Aplysia californica, a simultaneous hermaphrodite, has the ability to store and digest allosperm and frequently mates with multiple partners. Using controlled matings and behavioral observations, we characterized the mating behavior of multiply-mated A. californica. Regardless of their initial mating role, all animals mated a second time. Individuals acting as the initial sperm donor showed no preference for second mating role when paired with a "virgin" partner. However, individuals acting as the initial sperm recipient showed a highly significant preference for acting as the sperm donor in s

Magnesium and extinction of dinosaurs. Was magnesium deficit a major cause?

Chinese researchers have recently demonstrated that, before the extinction of dinosaurs, there was an impressive lowering in the magnesium concentration of fossil dinosaur eggshell. The structural and functional importance of eggshell magnesium--mainly in the cone layer--for embryonic viability and hatchability of oviparous species supports the hypothesis that magnesium deficit may have had a direct role in dinosaur extinction. Conversely this low magnesium concentration seems a questionable marker of magnesium deficit. The natural forces involved in the extinction of dinosaurs are more likely

Influence of Orientia tsutsugamushi infection on the developmental biology of Leptotrombidium imphalum and Leptotrombidium chiangraiensis (Acari: Trombiculidae).

Leptotrombidium chiangraiensis Tanskul & Linthicum, and Leptotrombidium imphalum Vercammen-Grandjean are important vectors of scrub typhus in rice field habitats in northern Thailand. The developmental biology of all stages of the life cycle of two generations of these species of mites infected with Orientia tsutsugamushi (Hayashi) and uninfected mites is reported. The development of the infected lines of both F1 and F2 L. chiangraiensis were significantly longer than their respective uninfected lines (P < 0.05). The developmental times of uninfected and infected F1 lines of L. imphalum were n

Induced defense by Bemisia tabaci biotype B (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) in tobacco against Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

Myzus persicae and Bemisia tabaci are serious pests of tobacco and can occur simultaneously on the same plant. We found that tobacco plants infested by whiteflies had fewer aphids than those without whiteflies. To determine whether B. tabaci feeding could induce plant defense against aphids locally and systemically, we determined the effects of B. tabaci on several biological parameters of M. persicae on tobacco. Infestation of B. tabaci nymphs reduced survival rates of M. persicae by 30.0%. In three generations, M. persicae populations increased 1,091-fold on uninfested plants compared with 2

Effects of forced egg retention on the temporal progression of West Nile virus infection in Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Environmental factors that impact the biology of mosquito vectors can have epidemiological implications. Lack of oviposition sites facilitated by environmental factors such as temperature and drought can often force Culex spp. mosquitoes to retain their eggs. Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus Say were fed blood meals containing West Nile virus (WNV; family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus) and either allowed to oviposit or forced to retain their eggs through different time points postinfection (9, 13, 20, 27 d) at 28 degrees C. Oviposition status did not significantly affect rates of WNV infection

Maternal investment and nutrient use affect phenotype of American alligator and domestic chicken hatchlings.

Maternal investment by oviparous amniotes, in the form of yolk and albumen, and the mechanisms by which embryos use available energy and nutrients have a profound effect on embryo and, consequently, hatchling phenotype. Nutrient provisioning and uptake vary within and among oviparous taxa, avian and non-avian reptiles, due to differences and similarities in environment, behavior, and phylogeny. Eggs of crocodilians, the closest extant relatives to modern birds, are ideal models for examining modes of embryonic development, especially with regard to nutrient uptake, in non-avian reptiles and co

Functional characterization and related evolutionary implications of invertebrate gonadotropin-releasing hormone/corazonin in a well-established model species.

In vertebrates, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) peptide is the central mediator of reproduction. Homologous peptides have previously also been identified in molluscan species. However, emerging evidence suggests that these molecules might serve diverse regulatory functions and proposes to consider them as corazonin (CRZ). We previously isolated the full-length cDNA of the invGnRH/CRZ peptide (termed ly-GnRH/CRZ) in the well-established invertebrate model species, the great pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis; however, its predicted functions remain to be verified. In this study, we first confir

Identification and characterization of the catalytic subunit of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti.

We characterized the catalytic subunit of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase in Aedes aegypti (Aaegp110). Aaegp110 is an essential component of the insulin/ insulin growth factor I signaling (IIS) cascade, which regulates aging, reproduction, and other physiological processes in diverse organisms. The Aaegp110 gene encodes five putative domains (adapter binding, ras binding, C2, helical, and PI3-kinase) identified by sequence homology with other p110 proteins. Aaegp110 transcript was expressed during all A. aegypti life stages except late pupae, with particularly high levels in embryos. In female t

Gut microbiota promote early-life digestive function in songbirds.

The vertebrate digestive tract harbors complex microbial communities whose influences on phenotypes and fitness in non-model organisms remain poorly understood. Here, we show that colonization with gut microbiota is critical for digestive development and function in a non-model songbird, the House sparrow (Passer domesticus). We raised nestlings under sterile (axenic) conditions and compared them to nestlings reconstituted (conventionalized) with microbiota from adult sparrows. Conventionalization drove significant increases in villus length, crypt depth, goblet cell density, and mucosal thick

Convergent Evolution of Pregnancy in Vertebrates.

Viviparity (live birth) represents a significant evolutionary innovation that has emerged in hundreds of lineages of invertebrate and vertebrate animals. The evolution of this trait from the ancestral state of egg laying has involved complex morphological, behavioral, physiological, and genetic changes, which enable internal development of embryos within the female reproductive tract. Comparable changes have also occurred in oviparous, brooding species that carry developing embryos in locations other than the female reproductive tract. This review explores the taxonomic distribution of vertebr
