An abiotic formation of meso- and DL-tartrates in 80% yield via the cyanide-catalyzed dimerization of glyoxylate under alkaline conditions is demonstrated. A detailed mechanism for this conversion is proposed, supported by NMR evidence and (13)C-labeled reactions. Activity of nitrate reductase from Triticum aestivum L. seedlings was decreased by deficiencies of molybdenum, zinc, and chlorine. Nitrate accumulated in molybdenum-deficient seedlings, declined in zinc-deficient seedlings, and was unaffected by the other micronutrient treatments. Serum muscle enzyme activities of eight healthy men (22-32 years old) were measured before and 48 h after separate bouts of repetitive concentric, eccentric, and isometric contractions of the lower leg anterior compartments. The effect of carrot extract on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute liver damage was evaluated. Propionic acidemia is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by deficiency of propionyl CoA carboxylase. Affected patients can develop severe hyperammonemia, whose causative mechanism is unknown. Rabies, caused by rabies virus (RABV), is a widespread zoonosis that is nearly 100% fatal. Alteration of the metabolic environment affects viral replication and the immune response during viral infection. In this study, glucose uptake was increased in mouse brains at the late stage of infection with different RABV strains (lab-attenuated CVS strain and wild-type DRV strain). To illustrate the mechanism underlying glucose metabolism alteration, comprehensive analysis of lysine acetylation and target analysis of energy metabolites in mouse brains infected with CVS and DRV strains were performed.
