Poor oral habits and malocclusions after usage of orthodontic pacifiers: an observational study on 3-5 years old children.

BACKGROUND: Pacifier sucking habit has been associated in the literature with alterations of dental occlusion, and it could be a predisposing factor for other poor oral habits among children. Orthodontic pacifiers have been introduced in the market aiming to reduce these disadvantages caused by the conventional type of pacifiers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of poor oral habits and malocclusions, after usage of orthodontic pacifiers in children with primary dentition. METHODS: A sample of 198 pre-school children, aged 3-5 years, (96 males and 102 females) who had exclu

Pacifier use modifies the association between breastfeeding and malocclusion: a cross-sectional study.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of breastfeeding and pacifier use on the occlusal status of preschool children. A cross-sectional study was conducted with children (n = 489) aged 2-5 years in private and public schools in Pelotas, South Brazil. Mothers answered a questionnaire on demographic, socioeconomic and behavioral variables, including breastfeeding and non-nutritive sucking habits. Malocclusion was classified as normal/mild and moderate/severe, according to WHO criteria. The association between breastfeeding and pacifier use with malocclusion was tested using multivariate log

Pacifier-sucking habit duration and frequency on occlusal and myofunctional alterations in preschool children.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of pacifier-sucking habit with occlusal and oral myofunctional alterations in preschool children. Eighty-four 2- to 5-year-old children participated in the study. Data on duration and frequency of pacifier use were collected from parents or guardians. Occlusal and oral myofunctional characteristics were examined by a dentist and a speech therapist, respectively. Chi-square tests and Poisson regression were used to analyze the data. The occlusal characteristics that were significantly associated with a pacifier-sucking habit were anter

Pacifier Sizing as a Prescription for Better Oral Health Outcomes for Infants: A Call to Action.

Sucking is essential for feeding and impacts the development of the cranio-facial-respiratory complex (CFRC). Non-nutritive sucking on a pacifier causes palatal narrowing and modifies the natural balanced relationship between intraoral pressure, peristaltic action of the tongue and the palate. Advanced engineering models have shown that malocclusions caused by pacifier use, are often a result of improper sizing. The sizing of pacifiers has historically been based on chronological age. Chronological age is not a size metric. Undersized pacifiers in a baby's mouth can cause growth complications,

Effect of different pacifier designs on orofacial tissues: a computational simulation comparative study.

OBJECTIVES: This study analyzes the effects of different pacifiers on the malocclusion formation, emphasizing the significance of pacifier design. Based on a computational model of pacifier sucking developed by the authors, the study provides insights dependent on pacifier geometry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A computational model was developed, consisting of the palate, pacifier, and tongue, including six tissues: mucosa, cortical bone, cancellous bone, and alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, and teeth. Three types of pacifiers were analyzed: orthodontic, standard, and conventional. The geometri

Multidisciplinary Evaluation of Pacifier Removal on Oro-Dentofacial Structures: A Controlled Clinical Trial.

It is well recognized that pacifier habit leads to occlusal and orofacial functional changes in children. However, the effects of the interruption of prolonged pacifier habit on the development of the dento-facial complex has not yet been fully characterized. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of pacifier removal on aspects of oro-dentofacial morphology and function in preschool children. For that, a pacifier group (n = 28) and a control group (n = 32) of 4-year-old children with and without pacifier habit, respectively, were followed up by a group of dentists and spe

Effect of restricted pacifier use in breastfeeding term infants for increasing duration of breastfeeding.

BACKGROUND: To successfully initiate and maintain breastfeeding for a longer duration, the World Health Organization's Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding recommends total avoidance of artificial teats or pacifiers for breastfeeding infants. Concerns have been raised that offering the pacifier instead of the breast to calm the infant may lead to less frequent episodes of breastfeeding and as a consequence may reduce breast-milk production and shorten duration of breastfeeding. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of restricted versus unrestricted pacifier use in healthy full-term newborns whose

Duplicated thumb with enormous soft-tissue oedema - pacifier type of thumb duplication.

Here we presented the first case of pacifier type thumb duplication. A newborn Japanese girl with no family history had a duplicated thumb on her left hand. The duplicated thumb showed a very large, oedematous soft-tissue nubbin in its appearance and was resected on the fifth day after birth. X-ray showed hypoplastic phalanx bone, suggesting type II polydactyly. Histology of the resected thumb showed enormous oedema in its connective tissue with cartilaginous and neural elements. This case was quite similar to literary reported cases of pacifier polydactyly in post-axial polydactyly, and its p

Analgesic effects of oral sucrose and pacifier during eye examinations for retinopathy of prematurity.

Oral sucrose reduces pain during heel sticks and venipunctures in preterm infants, but no studies have been done to determine the effectiveness of sucrose during eye examinations for retinopathy of prematurity. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of local anesthetic eye drops and a pacifier, plus repeated doses of 24% sucrose, to relieve pain associated with eye examinations for retinopathy of prematurity. In this double-blind randomized controlled trial, 30 preterm infants were randomly assigned to one of two treatments, in which they received either local

The Role of a Pacifier Shield: A Unique Perspective on Mandibular Growth and Airway Health: Part 2.

BACKGROUND: Daily, perhaps for hours at a time, pacifiers are put in baby's mouths for the primary purpose of soothing. A causal relationship exists between the use of pacifiers and the development of malocclusions and disturbances to the cranio-facial-respiratory complex (CFRC). Finite element analysis (FEA) has enabled us to understand how pacifier bulbs behave under negative pressure and tongue movement in the mouth. It is now realized that the design and size of pacifiers should be based on infant and toddler biometrics of the maxillary palatal width and should contribute to proper oral fu

Breastfeeding Protects from Overjet in Adolescence by Reducing Pacifier Use: A Birth Cohort Study.

Increased dental overjet in adolescence is a clinically relevant outcome associated with the complexity and high cost of treatment, indicating the need for prevention strategies. We investigated the long-term impact of breastfeeding and pacifier use on increased overjet (IOVJ) in permanent dentition. A prospective cohort nested in a randomized controlled trial was conducted from birth to 12 years of age (n = 214). Breastfeeding and pacifier use were recorded monthly until 12 months. Overjet was assessed at age 12 years. We employed a causal mediation analysis using parametric regression models

The Effect of a Unique Pacifier on Anterior Open Bite and Overjet in the Primary Dentition: A Pilot Study.

PURPOSES: Pacifiers are the most common device used by children to satisfy their sucking needs. Because of their design, reports of anterior open bite and increased overjet are common. The purposes of this pilot study were to measure the effects of a unique pacifier in toddlers who have existing open bites and increased overjets; and secondly to determine the feasibility of recruiting and retaining toddlers for a six-month study. METHODS: Toddlers with existing open bite and increased overjet currently using a conventional pacifier were recruited from a university pediatric dental clinic. Bas

Interaction of the protective effect of breastfeeding and the aggravating effect of pacifier use in the occurrence of bronchiolitis in children.

BACKGROUND: Acute bronchiolitis affects around 30 % of infants each winter in France. Breastfeeding (BF) is described as being protective against acute lower respiratory infections in developing countries, but this effect is more difficult to demonstrate in industrialized countries. Moreover, the effect of using a pacifier in the occurrence of bronchiolitis is not clearly established. In this context, the aim of the study was to investigate the link between BF and the use of a pacifier in the occurrence of bronchiolitis in children under 1 year of age who presented to five pediatric emergency
