American foulbrood (AFB) and European foulbrood (EFB) caused by Paenibacillus larvae and Melissococcus plutonius, respectively, are major bacterial infections of honey bees. Although macrolides (mirosamicin [MRM] and tylosin) have been used to prevent AFB in Japan, macrolide-resistant P. larvae have yet to be found. In this study, we revealed that both MRM-resistant and -susceptible strains exist in Japanese M. plutonius and that a methyltransferase gene (rlmA II ) was disrupted exclusively in MRM-susceptible strains due to a single-nucleotide insertion. The M. plutonius RlmAII modified G748 o

A total of 151 bacterial isolates were recovered from different developmental stages (larvae, nymphs and adults) of field-collected ticks (67 strains from Ixodes ricinus, 38 from Dermacentor reticulatus, 46 from Haemaphysalis concinna). Microorganisms were identified by means of 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Almost 87 % of the strains belonged to G(+) bacteria with predominantly occurring genera Bacillus and Paenibacillus. Other G(+) strains included Arthrobacter, Corynebacterium, Frigoribacterium, Kocuria, Microbacterium, Micrococcus, Plantibacter, Rhodococcus, Rothia, and Staphylococcus. G(-) st

American foulbrood (AFB), caused by the spore-forming bacterium Paenibacillus larvae, is the most destructive bacterial brood disease of Apis mellifera. Control is challenging because endospores persist for decades and antibiotic use is restricted by regulations, resistance, and residue concerns. Bacteriophages have re-emerged as a species-specific, residue-free strategy for AFB prevention and treatment. A PRISMA-guided systematic review was conducted searching PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science using the terms (bacteriophage OR phage) AND (honeybee OR Apis mellifera). A total of 90 records we

In Chile, honey is produced from several native species with interesting biological properties. Accordingly, those attributes are present in Chilean honeys owing to the presence of phenolic compounds inherited from specific floral sources. In recent years, the exported volume of Chilean honeys has been increased, reaching new markets with demanding regulations directed toward the fulfilment of consumers' expectations. Accordingly, there are countries with special requirements referring to Paenibacillus larvae spore-free honeys. This microorganism is the pathogen responsible for American foulbr

BACKGROUND: The Western honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) is a critical component of human agriculture through its pollination activities. For years, beekeepers have controlled deadly pathogens such as Paenibacillus larvae, Nosema spp. and Varroa destructor with antibiotics and pesticides but widespread chemical resistance is appearing and most beekeepers would prefer to eliminate or reduce the use of in-hive chemicals. While such treatments are likely to still be needed, an alternate management strategy is to identify and select bees with heritable traits that allow them to resist mites and disea

BACKGROUND: Propolis is a sticky, dark brown resinous residue made by bees that is derived from plant resins. It is used to construct and repair the nest, and in addition possesses several diverse bioactivities. Here, propolis from Apis mellifera from Nan province, Thailand, was tested for antibacterial activity against Gram(+ve) (Staphylococcus aureus and Paenibacillus larvae) and Gram(-ve) (Escherichia coli) bacteria.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The three bacterial isolates were confirmed for species designation by Gram staining and analysis of the partial sequence of 16S rDNA. Propolis was sequ

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) composting is a sustainable approach for treating swine waste. BSFL's performance depends on its digestive enzyme activity, which is shaped and enhanced by the gut microbiome. Moisture content influences gut microbiome composition and function; however, it is often overlooked, and its role remains poorly understood. We evaluated the effects of three moisture levels (65%, 75%, and 85%) on the larval gut microbiome, digestive enzyme activity, larval growth, protein content, and contaminant removal. Microbial communities in larval guts and substrates were character

This study utilized cultivable methods and 16 S amplicon sequencing to compare taxonomic profiles and functional potential of gut bacteria in the scarab beetle, Anomola dimidiata, under cellulose-enriched conditions. Eight culturable cellulolytic gut bacteria were isolated from the midgut and hindgut of the scarab larvae, respectively. 16 S amplicon sequencing evinced that the most represented taxonomic profiles at phylum level in the fermentation chamber and midgut were Bacillota (71.62 and 56.76%), Pseudomonadota (22.66 and 36.89%) and Bacteroidota (2.7 and 2.81%). Bacillota (56.74 and 91.39

A diverse set of parasites and pathogens affects productivity and survival of Apis mellifera honeybees. In beekeeping, traditional control by antibiotics and molecules of synthesis has caused problems with contamination and resistant pathogens. In this research, different Laurus nobilis extracts are tested against the main honeybee pests through an integrated point of view. In vivo effects on bee survival are also evaluated. The ethanol extract showed minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 208 to 416 μg/mL, having the best antimicrobial effect on Paenibacillus larvae among all substa

Antimicrobial resistance poses one of the most critical challenges to global health, particularly within veterinary medicine, where antibiotic misuse contributes significantly to multidrug-resistant infections. Bacteriophages have re-emerged as promising biocontrol agents that can target resistant pathogens while preserving host microbiota and environmental balance. However, despite growing experimental evidence, therapeutic implementation remains constrained by heterogeneous methodologies, limited clinical validation, and fragmented regulatory frameworks. This narrative review critically appr

Failure of conventional mosquito control strategies to curb the population of vectors have made the humans vulnerable to serious medical problems transmitted by them. This effect has been compounded by global climate change enabling the mosquitoes to cross geographical boundaries and cause trouble in regions where they were initially not found. As such, the scientific community has been compelled to devise alternative and innovative strategies of mosquito control that can be integrated with the conventional practices to implement multi-phasic approach of vector management. Honey bees can be affected by a variety of pathogens, which impacts their vital role as pollinators in agriculture. A cross-sectional study was conducted in southwestern Quebec to: i) estimate the prevalence of 11 bee pathogens; ii) assess the agreement between beekeeper suspicion of a disease and laboratory detection of the causative pathogen; and iii) explore the association between observed clinical signs and pathogen detection in a colony. A total of 242 colonies in 31 apiaries owned by 15 beekeepers was sampled in August 2017. The prevalence of Varroa destructor detection was estimated as

INTRODUCTION: Honey is a complex biological matrix containing plant-derived, microbial, and viral components that reflect both environmental and hive-associated processes. Traditional methods for determining botanical origin, such as melissopalynology, have limitations in resolution and scope. In this context, untargeted shotgun metagenomics emerges as a promising integrative approach for comprehensive honey characterization.
METHODS: This pilot study explored the feasibility of applying an untargeted shotgun metagenomic approach to honey samples from Necochea, Buenos Aires province, Argentin

Infectious (or Communicable) diseases are not only the past but also the present problem in developing as well as developed countries. It is caused by various pathogenic microbes like fungi, bacteria, parasites and virus etc. The medicinal plants and nano-silver have been used against the pathogenic microbes. Herbal medicines are generally used for healthcare because they have low price and wealthy source of antimicrobial properties. Like medicinal plants, silver nanoparticles also have emergent applications in biomedical fields due to their immanent therapeutic performance. Here, we also expl

The antagonistic relationship between bacteria and bacteriophages (phages) drives genetic changes that result in phage resistance, making it important to understand the dynamics of resistance acquisition in both natural microbial communities and therapeutic contexts. We developed a generalized Lotka-Volterra model describing the interaction among phage-susceptible bacteria, phage-resistant bacteria, and a lytic phage, incorporating asymmetric interspecific competition and partial phage resistance. The model was fitted to growth data from four bacterial strains-Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA103 and

The chemical composition of propolis of four species of stingless bees (SLBs) from Argentina was determined, and its antibacterial and anticancer activity was evaluated on selected types of microbes and cancer cell lines. Volatile secretions of all propolis samples are formed by 174 C2-C15 organic compounds, mainly mono- and sesquiterpenes and their derivatives. The chromatograms of ether extracts showed 287 peaks, of which 210 were identified. The most representative groups in the extracts of various propolis samples were diterpenoids (mainly resin acids), triterpenoids and phenolic compounds

INTRODUCTION: American and European foulbrood diseases (AFB and EFB, respectively) result in considerable economic losses for beekeepers. Currently, no satisfactory methods are available for the treatment of either disease. There has been a recent surge of interest in the use of natural substances, such as essential oils (EOs), as a means of combating infections in apiaries. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of a number of EOs against the causative agents of AFB and EFB, namely Paenibacillus larvae and Melissococcus plutonius, respectively, and the

BACKGROUND: Lutzomyia evansi, a phlebotomine insect endemic to Colombia's Caribbean coast, is considered to be the main vector of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis in the region. Although insects of this species can harbor pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms in their intestinal microbiota, there is little information available about the diversity of gut bacteria present in Lutzomyia evansi. In this study, conventional microbiological methods and molecular tools were used to assess the composition of bacterial communities associated with Lutzomyia evansi guts in immature and adult s
