Calcium-containing inorganic immunity booster drives the enrichment of specific root endophytic microbiota against Ralstonia solanacearum.

BACKGROUND: Engineering root microbiomes holds great promise to enhance plant health. Enhanced plant resistance via breeding or genetic modification can promote recruiting beneficial microbes, but is challenging to achieve. RESULTS: Here we showed that calcium (Ca) addition caused significant changes in tomato physiology, resulting in enhanced immunity towards the pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum along with increased levels of salicylic acid (SA), sugar content, and defense enzyme activities in roots. High Ca levels significantly altered the root microbiomes, enriching sixteen bacterial genera

Harnessing rhizobacteria: Isolation, identification, and antifungal potential against soil pathogens.

Rhizobacteria play a crucial role in plant health by providing natural antagonism against soil-borne fungi. The use of rhizobacteria has been viewed as an alternative to the use of chemicals that could be useful for the integrated management of plant diseases and also increase yield in an environmentally friendly manner. However, there is limited understanding of the specific mechanisms by which rhizobacteria inhibit these pathogens and the diversity of rhizobacterial species involved. This study aims to isolate, identify, and characterize rhizobacteria with antagonistic activities against soi

Mixed sugars to a multipurpose chemical: perspectives of 2,3-butanediol fermentability in complex lignocellulose hydrolysates.

2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BDO) is recognized for its industrial competitiveness and is predominantly produced in its enantiomerically pure form via microbial fermentation. The economical production of 2,3-BDO relies on the effective use of complex lignocellulosic materials and the advancement of inhibitor-resistant microbial strains. The robust expression of 2,3-BDO dehydrogenase in bacteria enhances volumetric productivity in inhibitor-rich lignocellulose hydrolysate. For instance, isolation of an inhibitor-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae from palm oil effluent facilitated the synthesis of 75 g L⁻¹

Induced Phase Separation and Recovery of 2,3-Butanediol from Fermentation Broth.

2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BDO) is a promising platform chemical that can be utilized in a wide range of applications including pharmaceuticals or as a building block for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Presently, 2,3-BDO is produced using petroleum feedstocks, however, it can also be produced by bacterial fermentation of sugars. A major drawback to biobased 2,3-BDO production is the costly separation and recovery process. Due to the high boiling point of 2,3-BDO (177 °C), a traditional distillation process would be energy intensive. This work evaluated the separation and recovery of 2,3-BDO from fe

Dietary Supplementation With Lactobacillus plantarum Ameliorates Compromise of Growth Performance by Modulating Short-Chain Fatty Acids and Intestinal Dysbiosis in Broilers Under Clostridium perfringens Challenge.

Clostridium perfringens is an important zoonotic pathogen associated with food contamination and poisoning, gas gangrene, necrotizing enterocolitis or necrotic enteritis in humans and animals. Dysbacteriosis is supposedly associated with the development of C. perfringens infection induced necrotic enteritis, but the detailed relationship between intestinal health, microbiome, and C. perfringens infection-induced necrotic enteritis remains poorly understood. This research investigated the effect of probiotics on the growth performance and intestinal health of broilers, and the involved roles of

Feeding differing direct-fed microbials and its influence on growth and haematological parameters of growing lambs.

A 4 mo feeding trial was conducted to ascertain the effect of direct-fed microbial (DFM) and their products, namely rumen enhancer three (RE3), Paenibacillus polymyxa (P3), and a fermentation product of RE3-RE3 Plus on the growth and haematological profile of lambs at different stages of growth (suckling, weaner, and grower phases). The lambs weighing 2.5 ± 2 kg were blocked by their weights and allotted to four dietary treatments, namely Control, RE3, RE3 Plus, and P3 in a randomized complete block design. Blood sampling of lambs to investigate the effect of the treatments on the haematologic

Impact of GAstV-2 infection on intestinal microbiota and renal gene transcriptome in goslings.

Goose astrovirus-2 (GAstV-2) is the major etiological agent responsible for hyperuricemia and visceral gout in goslings, which causes substantial economic losses to the goose-raising industry. However, the complete pathogenic mechanisms underlying GAstV-2-induced hyperuricemia have not been fully elucidated. In this study, 1-day-old healthy Yangzhou goslings were orally inoculated with GAstV-2 to establish a viral infection model. The effects of GAstV-2 infection on growth performance, serum uric acid levels, cecal microbiota structure, and renal gene expression of goslings were systematically

The bovine ocular microbiome: a multi-approach study of composition and antimicrobial activity.

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread use of antimicrobials and vaccines, the incidence of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), or pinkeye, continues to increase in North American beef cow-calf operations. Recent research suggests that there is potential for the commensal ocular microbiome to help mitigate IBK. Therefore, this study characterized the ocular microbiome of cattle with and without IBK using culture-based methods and shotgun metagenomic sequencing and assessed the ability of commensal bacteria to inhibit Moraxella spp. in vitro. Ocular swabs (n = 143) were collected from IBK-aff

Drug Repurposing Approaches towards Defeating Multidrug-Resistant Gram-Negative Pathogens: Novel Polymyxin/Non-Antibiotic Combinations.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative pathogens remain an unmet public health threat. In recent times, increased rates of resistance have been reported not only to commonly used antibiotics, but also to the last-resort antibiotics, such as polymyxins. More worryingly, despite the current trends in resistance, there is a lack of new antibiotics in the drug-discovery pipeline. Hence, it is imperative that new strategies are developed to preserve the clinical efficacy of the current antibiotics, particularly the last-line agents. Combining conventional antibiotics such as polymyxins with non-an
