Muscle pain intensity and pressure pain threshold changes in different periods of stroke patients.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the role of muscle pain in post-stroke pain syndromes. DESIGN: This cross-sectional-designed study enrolled 145 stroke patients at three different stroke duration periods (≤3 mos, 3 mos to 1 yr, and >1 yr) receiving inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation programs in a regional teaching hospital. Three common muscle tender points (two at the upper trapezius and one at the brachioradialis) and two relative periosteum points of the healthy and hemiparetic sides were identified for evaluation. Spontaneous pain intensity measured with the verbally reporte

Dose-dependent effects of alcohol consumption on pressure pain threshold.

INTRODUCTION: Prior laboratory-based studies have identified significant analgesic effects of acute alcohol. Despite providing excellent experimental control, these studies are limited regarding the range of alcohol exposure that can be practically and ethically achieved. This study capitalized on the heterogeneity in breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) resulting from naturalistic alcohol use at a public event to improve understanding of alcohol analgesia. We hypothesized that BrAC would be significantly and positively associated with pain threshold. METHODS: Participants were attendees of th

Piezo2 Mediates Low-Threshold Mechanically Evoked Pain in the Cornea.

Mammalian Piezo2 channels are essential for transduction of innocuous mechanical forces by proprioceptors and cutaneous touch receptors. In contrast, mechanical responses of somatosensory nociceptor neurons evoking pain, remain intact or are only partially reduced in Piezo2-deficient mice. In the eye cornea, comparatively low mechanical forces are detected by polymodal and pure mechanosensory trigeminal ganglion neurons. Their activation always evokes ocular discomfort or pain and protective reflexes, thus being a unique model to study mechanotransduction mechanisms in this particular class of

Extracephalic tenderness and pressure pain threshold in children with headache.

BACKGROUND: Sensitisation of the pain detection system has been suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of recurrent headache. In adults, increased sensitivity to pain has been found in patients with chronic tension type headache. Children with migraine or with unspecific headache report non-headache pains and interictal pericranial muscular tenderness more often than headache-free children. OBJECTIVE: To study if children with different types of headache report non-headache pain more often than children with no headache and if extracephalic muscular tenderness is different in children w

Reduced trapezius pressure pain threshold in fibromyalgia and opioid use.

While opioid medications are potent analgesics, their usage in chronic pain conditions can paradoxically result in opioid-induced hyperalgesia (i.e., enhanced pain sensitivity). However, among individuals with chronic pain, minimal research has examined the effects of long-term opioid medication on pain sensitivity. To better understand how long-term opioid use impacts pain sensitivity, we measured pressure pain threshold (PPT) of the bilateral trapezius among three cohorts: pain-free controls, individuals with fibromyalgia who were not taking opioids (FMN), and individuals with fibromyalgia w

Impact of sympathetic activation on pain threshold in human subjects.

This study examined the effect of the sympathetic activation with the head-up tilt test (HUT) on electrocutaneous pain in 56 young normotensive volunteers. Systolic arterial blood pressure (SAP), diastolic arterial blood pressure (DAP), heart rate (HR), sensory and pain thresholds to electrocutaneous stimulation were measured 30s before (in supine position), during (at 10s, 90s, 3min and 5min) and 10min after HUT (in supine position). No relationship was found between resting BP and pain perception. HUT significantly increased DAP and HR, but did not change SAP. During HUT, both sensory and pa

Elevated pain threshold in eating disorders: physiological and psychological factors.

Several studies have found decreased pain sensitivity in patients with eating disorders but it is unclear what physiological and psychological factors are associated with this abnormality. In the present investigation, thermal pain threshold latency, somatoform dissociation, body image disturbance and physiological indices of autonomic neural system activity were measured in 39 female patients with eating disorders (21 with anorexia nervosa and 18 with bulimia nervosa) and 17 healthy women. Pain threshold was elevated in patients with eating disorders, especially those with binge-purging sympt

Continuous sucrose feeding decreases pain threshold and increases morphine potency.

Although an opioid-mediated mechanism appears to be involved in the alteration of pain perception during feeding behavior, little is known about macronutrient effects on nociception. In this report we show that prolonged sucrose feeding alters responsiveness to painful stimuli and the analgesic potency of morphine. Male Sprague-Dawley rats maintained on ad lib laboratory chow with continuous access to a 20% sucrose solution displayed a significant decrease in tail-flick latency as early as 20 hours after introduction of the sucrose. The differences in pain threshold were naloxone sensitive. Af

Pain catastrophizing is associated with pain thresholds for heat, cold and pressure in women with chronic pelvic pain.

Background and aims Psychological traits such as pain catastrophizing may play a role in the development of chronic pelvic pain (CPP). Pain catastrophizing is the tendency to amplify negative cognitive and emotional pain processes. The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) assesses elements of pain catastrophizing divided into three subgroups of factors (rumination, helplessness and magnification). Previous studies have shown associations between CPP and increased pain sensitivity, widespread generalized hyperalgesia, and decreased pain thresholds, but the relation between pain catastrophizing and

Circulating polyunsaturated fatty acids, pressure pain thresholds, and nociplastic pain conditions.

OBJECTIVE: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) play a role in pain regulation. This study sought to determine whether free PUFAs found in red blood cells also play a role in nociceptive processing. We examined associations between circulating PUFAs and nociceptive thresholds to noxious mechanical stimuli. We also determined whether nociceptive thresholds were associated with nociplastic pain conditions. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used stored red bloods cells and data from 605 adult participants in the OPPERA-2 study of chronic overlapping pain conditions. In OPPERA-2 adults completed

The vulvalgesiometer as a device to measure genital pressure-pain threshold.

The construction and application of the vulvalgesiometer are described. This manually-applied device allows for the quantifiable measurement of pressure-pain thresholds in the external female genital region. A set of five vulvalgesiometers exerting pressures from 3 to 950 g was used in two studies. The goal of the first study was to examine the ability of the vulvalgesiometers to discriminate between women with and without provoked vestibulodynia (PVD). In a matched sample of affected and non-affected women, women with PVD exhibited significantly lower vestibular pressure-pain thresholds as co
