Morphometric and Immunohistochemical Characteristics of the Adult Human Soft Palate Muscles.

The soft palate is the only structure that reversibly separates the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. Most species can eat and breathe at the same time. Humans cannot do this and malfunction of the soft palate may allow food to enter the lungs and cause fatal aspiration pneumonia. Speech is the most defining characteristic of humans and the soft palate, along with the larynx and tongue, plays the key roles. In addition, palatal muscles are involved in snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Considering the significance of the soft palate, its function is insufficiently understood. The obj

Unique expression of cytoskeletal proteins in human soft palate muscles.

The human oropharyngeal muscles have a unique anatomy with diverse and intricate functions. To investigate if this specialization is also reflected in the cytoarchitecture of muscle fibers, intermediate filament proteins and the dystrophin-associated protein complex have been analyzed in two human palate muscles, musculus uvula (UV) and musculus palatopharyngeus (PP), with immunohistochenmical and morphological techniques. Human limb muscles were used as reference. The findings show that the soft palate muscle fibers have a cytoskeletal architecture that differs from the limb muscles. While al

Abnormalities of the muscles of the soft palate and their impact on auditory function in patients operated on for cleft palate: a case-control study.

Patients with cleft palate have a high incidence of otitis media (OM), which, even after palatal repair, can persist and lead to auditory dysfunction. We aimed to identify what predisposes such patients to develop OM and correlate it with auditory function. We designed a prospective case-control study of adults who had had their cleft palates repaired in childhood. We examined the anatomy of the eustachian tube and the paratubal muscles of the soft palate with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), assessed auditory function, and correlated the results to evaluate the impact of the pathological ana

Development of Soft Palatal Musculature Characterized by the Uvula Muscle of Miniature Pig.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical reconstruction is recommended for cleft palate patients. However, improper muscle reconstruction can cause scarring and velopharyngeal insufficiency. Understanding the developmental patterns of soft palatal musculature is crucial for improving treatments. Although mice are commonly used to investigate soft palate development, the uvula deficiency in mice limits their applicability. This study aimed to compare the developmental characteristics of soft palate muscles in miniature pigs and mice at various stages to better understand the patterns in large mammals. METHODS:

Morphology of the Levator Veli Palatini Muscle in Adults With Repaired Cleft Palate.

The purpose of this study was to examine differences in levator veli palatini (levator) morphology between adults with repaired cleft palate and adults with noncleft anatomy. Fifteen adult participants (10 with noncleft anatomy, 5 with repaired cleft palate) underwent 3-dimensional (3D) static magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Image analyses included measures of total muscle volume and the circumference and diameter at 6 points along the length of the muscle. Differences between groups were analyzed using independent sample Mann-Whitney U tests (α < 0.05). Significant differences between group

Loud clicking sounds associated with rapid soft palate muscle contractions.

An 8-year-old boy was seen by his primary care pediatrician with a chief complaint of "intermittent rapid vibrations of the epiglottis" that began several weeks prior. Intraoral examination revealed rapid, symmetrical bilateral contractions of the soft palate muscles (velum), accompanied by clicking sounds audible to physician (objective tinnitus) and patient. The patient was able to volitionally control the initiation and cessation of the palatal movements. The child's mother stated that there had been no clicking noises heard while the boy was sound asleep. Palatal "clonus" was tentatively d

Repair of recurrent cleft palate with free vastus lateralis muscle flap.

A 6-year-old girl presented with a large recalcitrant oronasal fistula after bilateral cleft lip and palate repair and numerous secondary attempts at fistula closure. Incomplete palmar arches precluded a free radial forearm flap. A free vastus lateralis muscle flap was successfully transferred. No fistula recurrence was observed at 18 months. There was no perceived thigh weakness. The surgical scar healed inconspicuously. Free flaps should no longer be considered the last resort for treatment of recalcitrant fistulas after cleft palate repair. A free vastus lateralis muscle flap is an excellen

Temporal Muscle Flap as a Treatment of an Extensive Cleft Palate in an Adult Patient.

For the management of cleft palate, the surgical approach has been suggested at an early stage even in childhood, varying in the number of interventions. Once the interventions are not performed at appropriate times, such as sequences that may accompany specific psychological, functional, and aesthetic effects. Since it has been indicated, temporal muscle flap is a technique with satisfactory results for a resolution of extensive clef palate in adult patients. The purpose of this paper is reporting a case of temporal muscle flap in the soft and hard palate of an adult with a reconstruction of

[The efficacy of muscle electrostimulation in the combined treatment of children with congenital cleft palate].

The technique of electrostimulation of the soft palate muscles of children with cleft palate is described. Low-frequency electrostimulation courses were carried out before and after surgery in accordance with the degree of decompensation of the palatopharyngeal junction. This method was effectively used in 30 children with cleft palate. The treatment efficacy was assessed by the morphometric and electromyographic methods, that have confirmed that electrostimulation improved the morphology of soft palatal muscles.

In resorting to these methods necessary precautions are precisely defined. The origins of the concerned muscles are, at first, situated among those of the whole musculature subjected to will, which are of two types "somitic" and "branchial". Three-dimensional imaging of palatal muscles in the human embryo and fetus: Development of levator veli palatini and clinical importance of the lesser palatine nerve.

BACKGROUND: After palatoplasty, incomplete velopharyngeal closure in speech articulation sometimes persists, despite restoration of deglutition function. The levator veli palatini (LVP) is believed to be significantly involved with velopharyngeal function in articulation; however, the development and innervation of LVP remain obscure. The development of LVP in human embryos and fetuses has not been systematically analyzed using the Carnegie stage (CS) to standardize documentation of development. RESULTS: The anlage of LVP starts to develop at CS 21 beneath the aperture of the auditory tube (A

Endonasal approach of salpingopharyngeus muscle for the treatment of ear click related to palatal tremor.

Palatal tremor (PT) is a rare disease associated with rhythmic movements of the soft palate. It can be separated into two distinct clinical entities: symptomatic and essential. Most patients with essential PT complain of the rhythmic ear clicks and in some cases tinnitus, but usually have an uneventful medical history. Symptomatic PT patients are often unaware of the palatal movements and have symptoms and signs of brainstem or cerebellar dysfunction. We describe the case of a 25-year-old patient who developed severe essential PT, with very distressing bilateral objective tinnitus, constantly
