The intestinal parasites of a community of feral chimpanzees, Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii.

Fecal specimens from 32 champanzees living in Gombe National Park, Tanzania, were examined. Six species of helminths and 2 species of ciliates were found: Probstmayris gombensis File (in press), Strongyloides fuelleborni von Linstow 1905, Necator sp., Oesophagostomum sp., Abbreviata caucasica von Linstow 1902, Trichuris sp., Troglodytella abrassarti Brumpt and Joyeux 1921, and an unidentified ciliate. None of the parasitic infections were heavy. This is the first such survey of the chimpanzee in its natural habitat.

Deciduous dentition eruption sequence of the laboratory-reared chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes).

Eruption sequence and age ranges for the maxillary and mandibular deciduous dentition were generated from serial dental study models from 28 laboratory-reared chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). These data can serve as additional normative, baseline information for the evaluation of fetal insults on neonatal growth and development in the laboratory-reared chimpanzee.

Identification of Significant Genomic Changes and Compartmentalization of Simian Foamy Virus in a Human Zoonotically Infected by a Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes troglodytes).

Despite increasing reports of zoonotic simian foamy virus (SFV) infections globally, knowledge of its genetic adaptation in humans and impact on viral transmission and pathogenicity remains limited. We obtained complete SFV genomes using metagenomics analysis of viral isolates from peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) and throat specimens from a worker (Case 6) and source chimpanzee (B1) that bit him. We analyzed viral diversity in three genomic regions (LTR, tas, and bet) involved in replication and latency using longitudinal specimens (PBLs, throat, saliva, urine, and semen) from Case 6 over

The First Evidence of Intermittent Rectal Prolapse in a Wild Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes).

BACKGROUND: Rectal prolapse in wild chimpanzees has been rarely reported. We document a case of rectal prolapse in a wild young male chimpanzee at Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania. METHODS: An affected young male in the Mahale M group was observed with photographs/video and diagnosed according to operational criteria used in human (Oxford grading system). Cause and course of the prolapse were estimated by a set of longitudinal field data. RESULTS: An intermittently self-reducing full-thickness rectal prolapse was diagnosed. Protrusion fluctuated within minutes; tenesmus and diarrhea

Measurement of Sylvian Fissure asymmetry and occipital bending in humans and Pan troglodytes.

The evolution of human-specific lateralised functions such as language has been linked to the development of structural asymmetries in the brain. Here we applied state of the art image analysis techniques to measure Sylvian Fissure (SF) asymmetry and Occipital Bending (OB) in 3D Magnetic Resonance (MR) images of the brain obtained in-vivo for 30 humans and 30 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). SF morphology differed between species, with the human SF terminating more superiorly in right inferior parietal lobe, an asymmetry that was on average absent in chimpanzees (F (1,52) = 5.963, p = 0.018). Posaconazole therapy for systemic coccidioidomycosis in a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes): a case report.

Systemic coccidioidomycosis was diagnosed in a 4-year-old male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) with ascites and failure to thrive. Physical examination, laboratory and radiological studies, and exploratory laparotomy showed signs of systemic fungal infection that included penetration into the central nervous system (CNS). Serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) titres, along with ascites cytology findings, confirmed the presence of Coccidioides immitis. However, the organism could not be cultured from the CSF. Treatment with fluconazole 10 mg kg(-1) daily for 6 months was not associated with clinical

Environmental management procedures following fatal melioidosis in a captive chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes).

A 40-yr-old male captive chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) presented with depression and anorexia for 7 days. The tentative diagnosis, following a physical examination under anesthesia, was pneumonia with sepsis. Despite antibiotic treatment and supportive care the chimpanzee died a week following presentation. Gross pathology confirmed severe purulent pneumonia and diffuse hepatosplenic abscesses. Detected in serum at the time of the initial examination, the melioidosis serum antibody titer was elevated (> 1:512). Soil samples were collected from three sites in the exhibit at three depths of 5, 15

Endocranial shape asymmetries in Pan paniscus, Pan troglodytes and Gorilla gorilla assessed via skull based landmark analysis.

Brain shape asymmetries or petalias consist of the extension of one cerebral hemisphere beyond the other. A larger frontal or caudal projection is usually coupled with a larger lateral extent of the more projecting hemisphere relative to the other. The concurrence of these petalial components is characteristic of hominins. Studies aimed at quantifying petalial asymmetries in human and great ape endocasts rely on the definition of the midline of the endocranial surface. Studies of brain material show that, at least in humans, most of the medial surface of the left occipital lobe distorts along

Age differences in cortical thickness and their association with cognition in chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes).

Humans and chimpanzees are genetically similar and share a number of life history, behavioral, cognitive and neuroanatomical similarities. Notwithstanding, our understanding of age-related changes in cognitive and motor functions in chimpanzees remains largely unstudied despite recent evident demonstrating that chimpanzees exhibit many of the same neuropathological features of Alzheimer's disease observed in human postmortem brains. Here, we examined age-related differences in cognition and cortical thickness measured from magnetic resonance images in a sample of 215 chimpanzees ranging in age

Asymmetry in the Cytoarchitecture of the Area 44 Homolog of the Brain of the Chimpanzee Pan troglodytes.

The evolution of the brain in apes and man followed a joint pathway stemming from common ancestors 5-10 million years ago. However, although apparently sharing similar organization and neurochemical properties, association areas of the isocortex remain one of the cornerstones of what sets humans aside from other primates. Brodmann's area 44, the area of Broca, is known for its implication in speech, and thus indirectly is a key mark of human uniqueness. This latero-caudal part of the frontal lobe shows a marked functional asymmetry in humans, and takes part in other complex functions, includin

Leucoencephalopathy with cerebral calcinosis in a young chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) - a case report.

CASE HISTORY: A 4-year-old chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) had a clinical history of a 2-year progressive central nervous dysfunction including convulsions and severe paralysis. RESULTS: Gross pathology revealed cerebral atrophy, ventricular enlargement and a severe encephalomalacia with extensive calcifications. Histologically, the white matter showed diffuse demyelination as well as vascular and perivascular calcifications which also involved the basal ganglia. Blood vessels with less distinctive calcium deposits exhibited periodic acid Schiff positive hyalinosis. Large areas of necrosis, hemo

Surgical procedure and postoperative management of a perineal urethrostomy in a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes).

A chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) with traumatic loss of the distal penis developed a gradually enlarging ventral urethral swelling and progressive dysuria. Endoscopy identified a urethral diverticulum, and endoscopic resection of the diverticulum wall was performed. Postoperative infection caused extensive necrosis of the penis, which necessitated a perineal urethrostomy. Complications of the urethrostomy included urethral obstruction from recurrent urethral stricture. The stricture was managed by regular dilatation using urethral bougies. Because of considerable postoperative swelling, catheter

A preliminary investigation of the construct of psychopathic personality (psychopathy) in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Although the construct of psychopathy has received considerable attention in humans, its relevance to other animals is largely unknown. We developed a measure of psychopathy for use in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), the Chimpanzee Psychopathy Measure (CPM), and asked 6 raters to complete this index on 34 chimpanzees. The CPM (a) demonstrated satisfactory interrater reliability and internal consistency; (b) exhibited marginally significant sex differences (males > females); (c) correlated positively with measures of extraversion, agreeableness, and observational ratings of agonism, sexual activ

Clinicopathologic study of six cases of meningitis and meningoencephalitis in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Three fatal cases of purulent meningitis and one fatal case of thromboembolic necrotizing meningoencephalitis occurred in chimpanzees from the Primate Center TNO, The Netherlands. In addition, two apes had clinical signs of meningitis and were successfully treated. The severity of the residual hemiparesis and dysphagia in one of these two apes was such that it was killed for humane reasons. The histopathological diagnosis was chronic active meningoencephalitis. Streptococcus pneumoniae was isolated from five apes and Klebsiella pneumoniae from one. In the majority of cases, the primary site of

Pituitary lesions in captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes): clinical presentation and histologic characterization.

Pituitary lesions have been sporadically reported in captive chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) populations. These lesions can be functional (hormone secreting) or non-functional. Functional lesions produce different clinical syndromes depending on the hormone produced. Previous reports of pituitary adenomas in chimpanzees have not characterized the tumors through clinical syndromes or by immunohistochemical features of the lesions. A retrospective review of necropsy and medical records from the Chimpanzee Care Center (CCC) at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center were queried to identif

Early Trauma Leaves No Social Signature in Sanctuary-Housed Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Negative early experiences can have detrimental effects on social functioning in later life, both in humans as well as in other socially-living animals. In zoo-housed chimpanzees, recent evidence suggests that there may be a lingering signature of early trauma on individuals' social interaction tendencies as measured by social proximity and grooming. Here, we address whether a similar effect would be observable in chimpanzees living under semi-wild conditions in an African sanctuary. By analysing party size, close proximity and social grooming, we show that in this specific sanctuary, chimpanz

Fatal arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy in 2 related subadult chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Cardiovascular disease is increasingly recognized as an important cause of morbidity and mortality in captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). This report records 2 cases of sudden cardiac death in closely related subadult captive chimpanzees with marked replacement fibrosis and adipocyte infiltration of the myocardium, which resemble specific atypical forms of the familial human disease arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. Changes were consistent with left-dominant and biventricular subtypes, which are both phenotypic variants found within human families with familial arrhythmogenic

Wild Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) Use Tools to Access Out of Reach Water.

The use of tools to drink water is well-documented in wild chimpanzees, but the specific function of this behavior is unclear. Here we use a large data set of drinking behaviors spanning 14 years of observation from the Kanyawara community of chimpanzees living in Kibale National Park, Uganda, to test two possible functions of leaf-sponges and other drinking tools. On the one hand, chimpanzees may use tools to access water that is hard to reach, which predicts that chimpanzees will preferentially use tools to drink at tree holes and crevices compared to all other locations. Conversely, chimpan

Adenovirus infection in savanna chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in the Issa Valley, Tanzania.

Adenoviruses are a widespread cause of diverse human infections with recently confirmed zoonotic roots in African great apes. We focused on savanna-dwelling chimpanzees in the Issa Valley (Tanzania), which differ from those from forested sites in many aspects of behavior and ecology. PCR targeting the DNA polymerase gene detected AdV in 36.7% (69/188) of fecal samples. We detected five groups of strains belonging to the species Human mastadenovirus E and two distinct groups within the species Human mastadenovirus C based on partial hexon sequence. All detected AdVs from the Issa Valley are rel

Genetic determinants of individual variation in the superior temporal sulcus of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

The superior temporal sulcus (STS) is a conserved fold that divides the middle and superior temporal gyri. In humans, there is considerable variation in the shape, folding pattern, lateralization, and depth of the STS that have been reported to be associated with social cognition and linguistic functions. We examined the role that genetic factors play on individual variation in STS morphology in chimpanzees. The surface area and depth of the STS were quantified in sample of 292 captive chimpanzees comprised of two genetically isolated population of individuals. The chimpanzees had been previou
