BACKGROUND: Marginal donor organs are a supplementary source of grafts that has not been fully exploited for pancreas transplantation (PTx).
METHODS: A total of 100 PTx were performed with grafts procured from either 48 nonmarginal donors (NMD) or 52 marginal donors (MD), namely age greater than 45 years and/or severe hemodynamic instability at the time of procurement. Autologous and allogenic transplantations of the caudal part of the pancreas into the omentum and the spleen were performed in 18 dogs. The fate of the transplants was followed histologically. In the grafts the Langerhans-islands preserved their integrity longer than in the other parts of the organ, but in 4 to 6 weeks they, too, necrotised.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive hormone function after pancreas transplantation (PTX) is unknown as it has not been studied.
METHODS: We prospectively studied PTX recipients to determine changes in reproductive hormones after PTX. Testosterone or estradiol, leutinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, and prolactin were determined before and 1 year after PTX in 23 patients (10 women, 13 men) followed for more than 1 year after PTX.
