Pantoea eucrina, a member of the Erwiniaceae family, is a rarely reported human pathogen primarily associated with plants. This study presents a documented case of catheter-related bloodstream infection caused by P. eucrina in a 60-year-old female receiving home parenteral nutrition. Despite presenting with only minor clinical symptoms, blood cultures from both central and peripheral sites confirmed the presence of P. eucrina, identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and whole-genome sequencing. The infection was successfully cle

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a secondary metabolite produced by Aspergillus flavus and other fungi. Soil, crops, food, feed, etc. were susceptible to aflatoxin B1 contamination, which caused adverse economic and health consequences. It is necessary to search for microorganisms or microbial enzymes that can degrade AFB1. The degradation activity of AFB1 by cell-free supernatant (68.30%) of isolate Pantoea sp. T6 was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than viable bacterial cells (4.87%) and intracellular cell extracts (3.68%). The supernatant's AFB1 degradation activity was reduced from 68.30% to 5.33% i

Pantoea agglomerans, a gammaproteobacterium of plant origin, possesses many beneficial traits that could be used for the prevention and/or treatment of human and animal diseases, combating plant pathogens, promotion of plant growth and bioremediation of the environment. It produces a number of antibiotics (herbicolin, pantocins, microcin, agglomerins, andrimid, phenazine, among others) which could be used for combating plant, animal and human pathogens or for food preservation. Japanese researchers have demonstrated that the low-molecular-mass lipopolysaccharide of P. agglomerans isolated by t

The type III secretion system (T3SS) is an extracellular apparatus used by many Gram-negative bacteria to deliver effector proteins directly into plant and animal cells, thereby facilitating host-specific association. Strains of the enterobacterial genus, Pantoea, have been isolated from a wide variety of hosts, including plants, insects, and humans, yet it is unclear whether the T3SS may be involved in these associations. In this study, we use comparative genomics and phylogenetic methods to examine the origin and distribution of T3SSs in 35 sequenced environmental and clinical strains of Pan

Bone infection is not an uncommon complication of open tibial shaft fractures. We report an unusual case of chronic tibial osteitis caused by Pantoea agglomerans after an open grade IIIB tibial shaft fracture. P. agglomerans, an enterobacteria, was identified on bone samples obtained nine months after the fracture. The infection probably resulted from the initial soil contamination and developed despite fixation and bone covering with a muscle flap performed during the same operative time and adapted intravenous antibiotics.

In grassland agroecosystems, some plant pathogenic bacteria can cause disease in animals. These strains are known as plant and animal cross-kingdom pathogenic bacteria. In this study, we established an alfalfa root infection model and a mouse model via the gavage administration of the Pantoea alfalfae CQ10 (CQ10) bacterial suspension. It was confirmed that the CQ10 strain caused bacterial leaf blight of alfalfa. Mice inoculated with 0.4 mL of 109 cfu/mL bacterial suspension developed clinical symptoms 48 h later, such as diminished vitality, tendencies to huddle, and lack of appetite, includin

BACKGROUND/AIM: Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is involved in the activation of the innate immune responses on monocytes/macrophages in vitro, and by intravenous injection. Although small quantities of LPS are usually found in traditional Chinese medicines, vegetables and fruits, the mode of action of orally administered LPS is still unclear.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: LPS derived from Pantoea agglomerans (LPSp) was orally administered to C3H/HeN or C3H/HeJ mice ad libitum.
RESULTS: The LPSp treatment enhanced phagocytosis by resident peritoneal macrophages of C3H/HeN mice but not of C3H/HeJ

INTRODUCTION: In crop pest control, microbial bioinsecticides are considered promising for overcoming the critical limitations of traditional chemical pesticides regarding environmental and health impact. In this study, we report a strain of Pantoea agglomerans (ELIV) lethal to black bean aphid Aphis fabae: we investigated the effects of this bacterium on aphids and host plants to test its potential as a natural insecticide.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We found that the entomopathogenic properties of P. agglomerans ELIV occur only through ingestion via oral infection assays, with no pathogenicity by

Pantoea septica, a gram-negative bacillus typically associated with opportunistic bloodstream infections in neonatal intensive care units, rarely causes pulmonary infections in immunocompetent individuals. We present a case of a 30-year-old male with multifocal cavitary pneumonia, bilateral parapneumonic effusions, and positive blood cultures for Pantoea septica, occurring in the setting of prior ketamine abuse. The patient presented with fever, productive cough, chest pain, and worsening dyspnea, without significant medical history or immunocompromising conditions. Diagnostic evaluation revea

BACKGROUND: Pantoea agglomerans (P. agglomerans) is a gram-negative bacterium that is commonly isolated from plant surfaces, seeds, and the environment. As an opportunistic pathogen, it can cause blood, urinary and soft tissue infections in immunocompromised patients. In central nervous system, P. agglomerans infection has been report in children and immune-compromised patients, however, infection by such bacterium in nontraumatized immune competent adults has not been reported. Here, we report a case of P. agglomerans cerebrospinal meningitis accompanied by positive anti-myeloperoxidase (MPO)

Sporothrix brasiliensis and Sporothrix schenckii stand as the most virulent agents of sporotrichosis, a worldwide-distributed subcutaneous mycosis. The origin of Sporothrix virulence seems to be associated with fungal interactions with organisms living in the same environment. To assess this hypothesis, the growth of these two species in association with Pantoea agglomerans, a bacterium with a habitat similar to Sporothrix spp., was evaluated. Growth, melanization, and gene expression of the fungus were compared in the presence or absence of the bacterium in the same culture medium. Both S. br

Long-term continuous monocropping of foxtail millet (Setaria italica) in China has increased crop vulnerability to emerging diseases and threatens yield stability and grain quality. This practice may also influence inoculum carryover and host-pathogen interactions, making foxtail millet health a central issue for sustainable production. This study reports the first occurrence in China of a previously undescribed bacterial leaf disease of foxtail millet. Early symptoms are characterized by water-soaked lesions at leaf tips that spread basipetally along the veins and gradually desiccate as the t

With the advancement of modern medicine and the prolonged survival of critically ill patients, unusual organisms are increasingly emerging. Initially found in the environment, these rare organisms started presenting as human pathogens, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Here, we present a rare case of disseminated Lodderomyces elongisporus fungemia and Pantoea dispersa bacteremia in a patient with parapneumonic effusion and ruptured liver abscess. This yeast was identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF). Although this organism has no anti

BACKGROUND: Pantoea agglomerans is a gram negative, aerobic/facultative anaerobic, rod shaped bacilli commonly isolated from plants, soil, food and faeces.(1) It is a rare cause of opportunistic infections in humans acquired mainly via two major routes being, wound infection or hospital acquired.
CASE REPORT: Here, we encountered a landmark, first of its kind, head and neck manifestation of a cervical soft tissue abscess with Pantoea agglomerans being the miscreant. The patient presented with complaints of a left sided neck swelling, which was radiologically suggestive of a cold abscess, howe

To evaluate the influence of leaf cuticular waxes on bacterial colonization of leaves, bacterial colonization patterns were examined on four glossy maize (Zea mays L.) mutants that were altered in their cuticular wax biosynthesis. Mutant gl3 was indistinguishable from the wild-type maize in its ability to foster colonization by the two bacterial species, Pantoea agglomerans and Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. nebraskensis. In contrast, the other three mutants supported the development of populations that significantly differed in size from those on the wild type. Mutant gl5 gl20 supported sma

Plant-pathogenic fungi form intimate interactions with their associated bacterial microbiota during their entire life cycle. However, little is known about the structure, functions and interaction mechanisms of bacterial communities associated with fungal fruiting bodies (perithecia). Here we examined the bacterial microbiome of perithecia formed by Fusarium graminearum, the major pathogenic fungus causing Fusarium head blight in cereals. A total of 111 shared bacterial taxa were identified in the microbiome of 65 perithecium samples collected from 13 geographic locations. Within a representat

Despite the numerous advancements in cardiac implantable electronic defibrillator (CIED) designs and implantation techniques, device-related infections continue to represent significant morbidity and mortality. Although Gram-positive bacteria remain the most commonly reported organisms, various other bacterial families have been reported. We describe a 61-year-old patient with a history of non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy who presented with implantable cardioverter defibrillator pocket infection due to Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Pantoea calida that developed a few days following the device g

Pantoea agglomerans infections in humans are uncommon. Most common infections reported are septic arthritis or synovitis. We report the case of a 25-year-old, healthy male, who presented with indurated swelling over the posterolateral aspect of his right thigh, associated with pain for one month. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed muscle edema with cystic areas in the posterior-most part of the vastus lateralis of the right thigh. The condition was clinically diagnosed as a right-sided benign tumor of the vastus lateralis muscle. However, Pantoea agglomerans was isolated on a culture of

The attraction of washed, medium-free cells of Pantoea (Enterobacter) agglomerans to wild, adult Rhagoletis mendax Curran, the blueberry maggot fly, was evaluated in managed blueberry fields in Maine. Attraction was evaluated using Pherocon AM and Ladd traps, each tested with or without washed bacterial cells. Field studies showed significant increases in fly captures on the Pherocon AM traps. Apple volatiles odors on Ladd traps seemed to cancel the effects of bacterial odors. Aerobic heterotrophic bacteria were isolated and identified from alimentary organs within wild R. mendax.
