Inverted papillomas of the prostatic urethra.

Inverted papillomas of the genitourinary tract are uncommon benign neoplasms usually occurring in the urinary bladder and less frequently in the upper urinary tract. To date, there are scant data and no comprehensive studies of inverted papilloma originating in the prostatic urethra. We identified 21 cases and evaluated their demographic, clinical, and histopathologic features. Patients had a mean age of 65.1 years (range: 30 to 89 y), with 10/21 (47.6%) presenting with gross hematuria (n = 8) or irritative symptoms (n = 2) related to the inverted papilloma and 11/21 (52.4%) detected incidenta

Inverted papilloma of the urinary bladder.

BACKGROUND: Inverted papillomas are rare in the lower urinary tract. It is a histologically benign tumor with low grade malignant potential. Association with transitional cell carcinoma has also been reported. METHODS: Eight cases of inverted papilloma of the urinary bladder were diagnosed at this hospital between November 1990 and May 1994. There were one female and seven males with an average age of 63.5 years. We analyze their clinical presentations, histological findings and the outcome of treatments. RESULTS: Four patients presented with hematuria, and four with obstructive symptoms. Fo

An inverted papilloma with intracranial extension.

Inverted papilloma can be found in the lateral wall of the nose, the ethmoidal sinus, the maxillary sinus, the sphenoidal sinus and the frontal sinus. To our knowledge there are no reports of papillomas with intracranial extension. This case report describes the history of a patient with long-standing inverted papillomas, which eventually grew intracranially. The treatment of this patient and the treatment of inverted papilloma in general are discussed.

[Inverted papilloma of the urinary bladder].

Five cases of inverted papilloma in the bladder are reported. All cases were males complaining of dysuria or hematuria. Total cystectomy with construction of ileal conduit was carried out in the first case, and transurethral resection in the other cases. Every surgical specimen was histologically diagnosed as inverted papilloma. The inverted papilloma is a distinct lesion characterized by its rarity compared to frequency of the other vesical papillomas. The prognosis is generally benign, but the possibility of recurrence and malignant transformation indicates the necessity of a close periodica

Inverted urothelial papilloma: A case report.

Inverted urothelial papilloma (IUP) is an unusual tumor that typically presents as a non-invasive, endophytic urothelial neoplasm. Though fairly well described in the bladder, IUP of the upper urinary tract is fairly rare, with only 68 cases documented in English language literature. Our patient presented with an IUP of the distal left ureter and was treated with a distal ureterectomy and reimplant of the ureter with a psoas hitch.

Endoscopic management of sinonasal inverted papilloma.

Inverted papillomas (IPs) are benign sinonasal epithelial tumors that are locally aggressive and has a preponderance to recur if incompletely excised. This is a retrospective report describing 13 patients who underwent endoscopic excison from March 2004 to December 2010. Data was summarized into age, sex, location of tumor, surgical outcome and disease free status. Majority of the patients were males with the remaining 3 females, with a mean age of 50.9 years (range 24-76 years). Two patients needed an additional procedure of endoscopic dacrocystorhinostomy (EDCR) for epiphora. Out of the 13 p

Natural history of urothelial inverted papilloma.

BACKGROUND: Inverted urothelial papilloma is an uncommon urothelial neoplasm. Although it is traditionally regarded as a benign tumor, conflicting data on multiplicity, recurrence rate, and association with urothelial carcinoma have left uncertainties concerning its biologic behavior. METHODS: The authors analyzed the clinicopathological characteristics of 75 cases of inverted papilloma in the urinary tract without prior or concurrent urothelial carcinoma to determine its biologic behavior and prognosis, and to correlate these findings with surveillance strategies. RESULTS: These patients ra

Endoscopic management of extensive inverted papilloma.

BACKGROUND: Given the malignant potential and propensity for recurrence of inverted papilloma (IP) of the sinonasal cavity, complete excision is warranted. For disease extending to multiple sites, open surgical oncological procedures are associated with high morbidity and do not assure complete control of the tumor. The endoscopic approach provides excellent visualization, permits removal of diseased mucosa while preserving vital anatomic structures, and allows for excellent postoperative surveillance. Recurrences are identified early and endoscopic resection is repeated as necessary until the

Radiological follow-up of inverted papilloma.

The aim of this study was to describe cross-sectional imaging features of recurrent papilloma of the nasal fossa and paranasal sinuses and to evaluate the role of MR and CT in the postoperative follow-up of this lesion. Magnetic resonance imaging and CT of ten patients who presented recurrence of inverted papilloma were reviewed and correlated to initial imaging, endoscopy, and surgical reports. Imaging patterns of recurrent inverted papilloma are identical to those of initial tumors and recurrence location is closely related to the site of the former lesion. Magnetic resonance is more efficie

Endoscopic management of sinonasal inverted papilloma.

Since 1992, 42 patients at the University of Pennsylvania have been treated for inverted papilloma (IP). Thirty-three patients were managed endoscopically with or without a Caldwell Luc approach (CLA) and retrospectively analyzed. The CLA, which involves a gingivobuccal incision for access to the maxillary sinus, is distinguished from a formal Caldwell Luc procedure. These 33 patients with histologically confirmed IP were without evidence of malignancy. They also did not have evidence of intracranial, orbital, or frontal sinus IP. Seventeen of 33 patients (17/33) were without prior treatment (

Inverted papilloma of bladder: clinical significance.

Based on 15 cases of inverted urothelial papilloma, we present the clinical significance of these lesions in view of the current literature. An inverted papilloma should raise suspicion with respect to the whole urothelial surface. However, approaching every lesion of this type as a (pre-)neoplastic tumor does not seem justified, since 90 percent of all cases reported so far do not present any clinical or histologic feature of malignancy. Some factors, such as the patient's history, eventually associated urothelial carcinomas, or histologic features of malignant transformation within an invert

Surgical treatment of sinonasal inverted papilloma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To highlight how surgery of inverted papilloma has developed during the past year. Moreover, to give our own opinion on the state of research regarding inverted papilloma surgical management. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies covering surgical treatment of inverted papilloma concentrated on the optimum surgical management aiming at complete resection, least morbidity and best outcome, with special interest regarding the maxillary and frontal sinuses. In maxillary sinus inverted papilloma, to avoid empty nose and/or epiphora, recent articles exerted all attempts to preserve th

[Ureteral inverted papilloma: a case report].

A 43-year-old man presented with left hydronephrosis, incidentally found by ultrasonography. He had undergone transurethral bladder tumor resection when he was 29 years old. Cystoscopy revealed a tumor protruding from the left ureteral orifice. Left partial ureterectomy was performed, and its histopathological diagnosis was ureteral inverted papilloma. He has remained free of disease for 18 months after the surgery.
