Experimental infection of the baboon (Papio cynocephalus) with Echinococcus granulosus of camel, cattle, sheep and goat origin from Kenya.

In different areas of the world, strains of Echinococcus granulosus have been described which appear to vary in their infectivity, and laboratory primates have been used as indicators of their infectivity to man. This phenomenon was evaluated in Kenya for hydatid material of human, camel, cattle, sheep and goat origin. Viable eggs, produced by experimental infections in dogs with larval material from all the above intermediate hosts, were fed separately to four baboons (Papio cynocephalus) in each case. Baboons were autopsied between 373 and 501 days following infection and the liver, lungs, h

Schistosoma mansoni infection in a natural population of olive baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis) in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania.

Infection with Schistosoma mansoni was studied in 5 troops of olive baboons (Papio cynocephalus amubis) in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania. Three troops were infected with S. mansoni. An aggregated distribution of parasites was observed among hosts. Troop membership was found to be the most significant factor influencing parasite prevalence. Age and reproductive status had no significant effect, but there was a trend for males to acquire higher levels of infection. However, age-prevalence curves showed a high infection in young baboons declining in the older baboons. Behavioural component

Efficacy of fenbendazole formulated in a commercial primate diet for treating specific pathogen-free baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis) infected with Trichuris trichiura.

Trichuris trichiura is a common intestinal nematode parasite of captive baboons. We evaluated the efficacy of fenbendazole formulated in a commercial primate diet (FBZ-PD) for treating specific pathogen-free (SPF) baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis) naturally infected with Trichuris trichiura. Twenty-nine baboons, housed indoors in 3 separate rooms, were fed FBZ-PD for 5 d, whereas 4 baboons housed in another isolated area served as untreated controls. The efficacy of FBZ-PD was measured as reduction in the number of T. trichiura eggs in host feces after treatment as determined by quantitative

Expression of mRNA for interleukin-1beta, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and macrophage migration inhibitory factor in HPA-axis tissues in Schistosoma mansoni-infected baboons (Papio cynocephalus).

Cytokines may regulate the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis during schistosomiasis. This possibility was investigated in baboons experimentally infected with Schistosoma mansoni. Serum levels of corticotrophin-releasing hormone, adrenocorticotrophin, cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone were confirmed to be decreased in infected baboons as previously shown. To explore if this effect is associated with specific expression of cytokines with endocrine activity, and are also associated with the pathology of the disease, Northern blots for interleukin-1beta, interleukin-6, tumor n

A missing piece of the Papio puzzle: Gorongosa baboon phenostructure and intrageneric relationships.

Most authors recognize six baboon species: hamadryas (Papio hamadryas), Guinea (Papio papio), olive (Papio anubis), yellow (Papio cynocephalus), chacma (Papio ursinus), and Kinda (Papio kindae). However, there is still debate regarding the taxonomic status, phylogenetic relationships, and the amount of gene flow occurring between species. Here, we present ongoing research on baboon morphological diversity in Gorongosa National Park (GNP), located in central Mozambique, south of the Zambezi River, at the southern end of the East African Rift System. The park exhibits outstanding ecological dive

Supraorbital development in chimpanzees, macaques and baboons.

Macroscopic and histological parameters are considered in an analysis of bone formation in the supraorbital region of macaques (Macaca mulatta), baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis), and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus). Results indicate that post-natal osteogenesis of the supraorbital segment of the frontal bone in these primates occurs as a cyclic phenomenon that coincides wth dental eruption patterns.

Naturally occurring lesions in some endocrine glands of laboratory maintained baboons (Papio sp.).

The pituitary gland was examined from 623 immature baboons (Papio cynocephalus and Papio anubis). Findings included microscopic cysts in the pars distalis (132), pars intermedia (two) and pars nervosa (one). In 641 necropsies five cases of unilateral thyroid glands were noted. Microscopic thyroid lesions included ectopic thymus (328), minor lymphocytic infiltrates (14) and cysts (two). Parathyroid lesions consisted of ectopic thymus (73) and cysts (24). Dilated capillaries in the islets of Langerhans was the only microscopic change seen in the endocrine pancreas. All lesions generally occurred

Further evidence for phenotypic signatures of hybridization in descendant baboon populations.

Hybridization may have played a substantial role in shaping the diversity of our evolving lineage. Although recent genomic evidence has shown that hybridization occurred between anatomically modern humans (AMHS) and Neanderthals, it remains difficult to pin down precisely where and when this gene flow took place. Investigations of the hybrid phenotype in primates and other mammals are providing models for identifying signatures of hybridization in the fossil record. However, our understanding of intra- and inter-taxon variation in hybrids is still limited. Moreover, there is little evidence fr

Abdominal pregnancy in a baboon: a first case report.

The abdominal pregnancy is a rare, but life threatening complication of ectopic embryo implantation. Only three cases of abdominal pregnancy have been previously described in primates: in a squirrel monkey, owl monkey and in a rhesus macaque. A 14-year-old wild-caught olive baboon (Papio cynocephalus anubis) was diagnosed at the ultrasound examination with advanced gestational age extrauterine pregnancy. At the initial laparotomy and necropsy the diagnosis of abdominal pregnancy was made on Studdiford's criteria. This case indicates the possibility of developing a model for further study of di

The effect of medroxyprogesterone acetate (Depo-Provera) on prenatal development in the baboon (Papio anubis): a preliminary study.

Six female olive baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis) were treated with a single dose of 150 mg of Depo-Provera i.m. at day 30 of pregnancy, approximately three times the human dose equivalent on a body weight basis. Fetectomies were performed at day 100 of gestation. The body weights and measurements of the five live fetuses were comparable to age-matched controls and no gross or histologic abnormalities were seen. The dead fetus was in an advanced state of decomposition. This preliminary study suggests that, at levels up to three times that used for human contraception, Depo-Provera does not

Peri-portal fibrosis of the liver due to natural or experimental infection with Schistosoma mansoni occurs in the Kenyan baboon.

The chronic granulomatous inflammation that occurs during schistosomiasis mansoni and its reparative healing lead to hepatic fibrosis, with subsequent portal hypertension (a life-threatening sequela). In the murine model, granuloma modulation invariably leads to formation of fibrous tissue and disposition of extracellular matrix. Typically, < 10% of patients infected with Schistosoma mansoni progress to clay-pipe-stem fibrosis. Similar fibrosis occurs in chimpanzees during experimental infections. Although previous studies of schistosomiasis mansoni in Kenyan baboons have failed to demonstrate

Interventions and the development of dominance relationships in female baboons.

Dominance relationships between adult and adolescent female yellow baboons, Papio cynocephalus, were studied in Amboseli Park, Kenya. Adolescents attempted to become dominant to some females (called 'targeted females') while remaining subordinate to others. Agonistic relationship with targeted females passed through a sequence of stages before the younger female achieved dominance. An examination of nondyadic agonistic interactions revealed that adolescents frequently intervened against targeted females, but never against nontargeted females, and that others sometimes aided adolescents against

Phylogenetics and genomic variation of Hepatocystis isolated from shotgun sequencing of wild primate hosts.

Hepatocystis are apicomplexan parasites nested within the Plasmodium genus that infect primates and other vertebrates, yet few isolates have been genetically characterized. Using taxonomic classification and mapping characteristics, we searched for Hepatocystis infections within publicly available, blood-derived whole genome sequence (WGS) data from 326 wild non-human primates (NHPs) in 17 genera. We identified 37 Hepatocystis infections in Papio cynocephalus (yellow baboons) and four species of Chlorocebus monkeys (grivets, green monkeys, vervet monkeys, and malbroucks) sampled from locations

Prevalence of Babesia microti in free-ranging baboons and African green monkeys.

Babesia microti-like parasites have been reported to infect captive non-human primates (NHPs). However, studies on the prevalence of Babesia spp. in free-ranging NHPs are lacking. This investigation aimed at determining the prevalence of B. microti in wild-caught Kenyan NHPs. In total, 125 animals were studied, including 65 olive baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis) and 60 African green monkeys ([AGMs] Chlorocebus aethiops). Nested polymerase chain reaction targeting Babesia β-tubulin genes was used to diagnose infection prevalence. Results indicated a prevalence of 22% (27/125) B. microti infe

Spotlighting zoonotic strongyloidiasis: a semi-systematic review of threadworms within baboons highlights opportunities for human infections.

BACKGROUND: Both humans and non-human primates are susceptible to Strongyloides fuelleborni, a grossly underappreciated parasitic zoonotic threadworm across the world, in addition to the more widely reported Strongyloides stercoralis. This semi-systematic review sought to assess the global evidence on zoonotic strongyloidiasis in baboons, Africa's most prolific non-human primate, to better understand the zoonotic threat these animals may pose to control strategies and public health goals. METHODS: Using appropriate keyword terminology, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched

Whole-genome sequencing reveals evidence for inter-species transmission of the yaws bacterium among nonhuman primates in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Treponema pallidum subspecies pertenue (TPE) is the causative agent of human and nonhuman primate (NHP) yaws infection. The discovery of yaws bacterium in wild populations of NHPs opened the question of transmission mechanisms within NHPs, and this work aims to take a closer look at the transmission of the disease. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Our study determined eleven whole TPE genomes from NHP isolates collected from three national parks in Tanzania: Lake Manyara National Park (NP), Serengeti NP, and Ruaha NP. The bacteria were isolated from four species of NHPs: Chlorocebu

Sex-specific gene expression in the blood of four primates.

Blood is an important non-reproductive tissue, but little is known about the sex-specific gene expressions in the blood. Therefore, we investigated sex-specific gene expression differences in the blood tissues of four primates, rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), Tibetan macaques (M. thibetana), yellow baboons (Papio cynocephalus), and humans. We identified seven sex-specific differentially expressed genes (SDEGs) in each non-human primate and 31 SDEGs in humans. The four primates had only one common SDEG, MAP7D2. In humans, immune-related SDEGs were identified as up-regulated, but also down-reg
