Evaluation of the SCAT 5 tool in the assessment of concussion in Para athletes: a Delphi study.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate if the sport concussion assessment tool version 5 (SCAT5) could be suitable for application to Para athletes with a visual impairment, a spinal cord injury, or a limb deficiency. METHODS: A 16-member expert panel performed a Delphi technique protocol. The first round encompassed an open-ended questionnaire, with round 2 onwards being composed of a series of closed-ended statements requiring each expert's opinion using a five-point Likert scale. A predetermined threshold of 66% was used to decide whether agreement had been reached by the panel. RESULTS: The Delphi s

Data-Driven Validation of the Structural Validity World Shooting Para Sport Shotgun Classification: A K-Means Cluster Analysis of 176 Para Trap Athletes.

Evidence-based Paralympic classification must limit impairment-related advantages. World Shooting Para Sport classification, based on manual muscle testing, has never been empirically validated. We assessed structural validity using unsupervised machine learning on retrospective data from 176 Para Trap athletes spanning 2017-2025. Z-standardized composites captured upper limb, lower limb and trunk strength, plus trunk stability. K-means clustering, with k selected via elbow and silhouette methods, was compared with official classes using accuracy and information-based metrics. The best four-cl

Incorporation of a dual-task cognitive exercise during unsupported seated balance in collegiate para athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Balance remains a critical element in the evaluation and management of sports injury, with recent recommendations to integrate dual-task cognitive exercises into balancing to further challenge the body's vestibular and somatosensory systems. Dual-task balancing has yet to be examined in a sample of para-athletes. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a dual-task cognitive exercise on unsupported, seated balance in a sample of healthy, collegiate para-athletes. A secondary objective was to investigate the role of sex, concussion history, and functional classifica

Influence of lower limb spasticity on vertical jump capacity in para-athletes with cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Spasticity is a common feature in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) that may impair muscle function and affect explosive movements such as jumping. Although vertical jump performance is a key indicator of neuromuscular capacity in para-athletes, the specific effects of lower-limb spasticity remain unclear, particularly when comparing unilateral and bilateral profiles. OBJECTIVE: To compare spasticity scores between less and more affected legs as well as across CP profiles, examine differences in vertical jump performance variables between CP participants with unilateral spastic

Elite para athletes with active coping behaviour are less likely to report a sports injury.

OBJECTIVE: Elite para athletes report a high incidence of sports injuries. Research suggests that athletes' strategies to manage adversities may influence the sports injury risk, but knowledge about para athletes' coping behaviours and their association with injuries is limited. The aim was to describe the distribution of coping behaviours in Swedish elite para athletes by sex, age, impairment, sport and to examine associations between coping behaviours and the probability of reporting a prospective sports injury during a 52-week study period. METHOD: Eighty-three para athletes participating

Evaluation of the bilateral function in para-athletes with spastic hemiplegia: A model-based clustering approach.

OBJECTIVES: Spastic hemiplegia is one of the most common forms of cerebral palsy, in which one side of the body is affected to a greater extent than the other one. Hemiplegia severity (i.e. moderate vs mild forms) is currently used in some Para sports for classification purposes. This study evaluates the sensitivity of several tests of stability (e.g. one-legged stance test), dynamic balance (side-step test), coordination (rapid heel-toe placements), range of movement (backward stepping lunge), and lower limb power (the triple hop distance and the isometric peak force of the knee extensors) to

A tale of two stories: COVID-19 and disability. A critical scoping review of the literature on the effects of the pandemic among athletes with disabilities and para-athletes.

The still ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted athletes, and, in particular, para-athletes and athletes with disabilities. However, there is no scholarly appraisal on this topic. Therefore, a critical scoping review of the literature was conducted. We were able to retrieve sixteen relevant studies. The sample size ranged from 4 to 183. Most studies were observational, cross-sectional, and questionnaire-based surveys, two studies were interventional, and two were longitudinal. One study was a technical feasibility study. Almost all studies were conducted as single-country studies

Evaluating the Validity of Tests to Predict Sprint and Change of Direction Speed in Para-Athletes With Brain Impairments.

Maximum running speed is a performance determinant in para-athletics and cerebral palsy football. Sixty international para-athletes with brain impairments completed five activity-limitation tests (standing broad jump, four bounds for distance, split jumps, 10-m speed skip, and running in place) and two criterion tests (40-m sprint and modified agility test). The same three tests (standing broad jump, four bounds for distance, and 10-m speed skip) that correlated with running performance in nondisabled runners (.67 < r < -.82; p < .05; 75% of variance) also correlated in para-athletes with brai
