Interactive effects of triclosan, microplastic vectors, and ocean warming-acidification on sea urchin embryo development.

Understanding how emerging contaminants interact with climate-driven stressors is essential for accurate ecological risk assessment in coastal ecosystems. This study evaluates the individual and combined effects of triclosan (TC), polyethylene microplastics (MP), ocean warming (OW), and ocean acidification (OA) on the early development of Paracentrotus lividus embryos. A tiered experimental design was implemented to: (i) characterize TC dose-response curves alone and in combination with increasing concentrations of MP (300-3000 particles mL-1), and (ii) assess how OW (24 °C) and OA (pH 7.6) mo

Autophagy is required for sea urchin oogenesis and early development.

Autophagy is a major intracellular pathway for the degradation and recycling of cytosolic components. Emerging evidence has demonstrated its crucial role during the embryo development of invertebrates and vertebrates. We recently demonstrated a massive activation of autophagy in Paracentrotus lividus embryos under cadmium stress conditions, and the existence of a temporal relationship between induced autophagy and apoptosis. Although there have been numerous studies on the role of autophagy in the development of different organisms, information on the autophagic process during oogenesis or at

DNA damage and developmental defects after exposure to UV and heavy metals in sea urchin cells and embryos compared to other invertebrates.

The depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer and the resulting increase in hazardous ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation reaching the Earth are of major concern not only for terrestrial but also for aquatic organisms. UV-B is able to penetrate clear water to ecologically significant depths. This chapter deals with the effects of UV radiation on DNA integrity in marine benthic organisms, in particular sea urchins in comparison to other marine invertebrates (sponges and corals). These animals cannot escape the damaging effects of UV-B radiation and may be additionally exposed to pollution from natu

Biotic and environmental stress induces nitration and changes in structure and function of the sea urchin major yolk protein toposome.

The major yolk protein toposome plays crucial roles during gametogenesis and development of sea urchins. We previously found that nitration of toposome increases in the gonads of a Paracentrotus lividus population living in a marine protected area affected by toxic blooms of Ostreospsis cf. ovata, compared to control populations. This modification is associated with ovatoxin accumulation, high levels of nitric oxide in the gonads, and a remarkable impairment of progeny development. However, nothing is known about the environmental-mediated-regulation of the structure and biological function of

Toxicity of selenium (Na2SeO3) and mercury (HgCl2) on the planarian Dugesia gonocephala.

The toxicity of selenium (Na2SeO3) and mercury (HgCl2) was determined by using a freshwater planarian which is particularly sensitive to pollution, and belongs to a fissiparous breed of Dugesia gonocephala. The mortality and fissiparity frequency of the subjects were studied. They were exposed to intense treatments (48 hours) or for medium to long periods of time (21 days) to either the single compounds or a combination of both, and were fed or fasting. The lethal effect of sodium selenite is correlated to the food intake, whereas the toxicity of mercurous chloride is probably the result of a

The sea urchin embryo: a model to study Alzheimer's beta amyloid induced toxicity.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. The cause of AD is closely related to the accumulation of amyloid beta peptide in the neuritic plaques. The use of animal model systems represents a good strategy to elucidate the molecular mechanism behind the development of this pathology. Here we use the Paracentrotus lividus embryo to identify molecules and pathways that can be involved in the degenerative process. As a first step, we identified the presence of an antigen related to the human APP, called PlAPP. This antigen, after gastrula stage, is processed producing a polypep

"Beached and commercial plastics' leachates: Assessment of chemical composition and ecotoxicity to marine biota".

Five plastic categories representative of beach litter from the Central Adriatic Sea were selected to assess the hazard of leachates to marine biota: Heterogeneous Fragments (HF), Mussel Nets (MN), Polystyrene Box fragments (PB), Drink Bottles (DB), and "Rapido" Trawl Rubber (RTR). Leachates (L1) were prepared by agitating beached and commercial plastics in seawater for 72 h; a sequential extraction (L2) with nitric acid or methanol quantified residual chemicals (metals or organics, respectively). Trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and aliphatic hydrocarbons (AHs) effective

Freeze-Drying Blue Crab Roe, Sea Urchin, and Beluga Caviar: Impact on Nutritional, Biochemical, and Sensory Properties.

The growing demand for clean-label food ingredients drives interest in novel marine flavorings. This study evaluated the physicochemical, antioxidant, volatile (GC-MS), and sensory profiles of freeze-dried powders from blue crab roe (Callinectes sapidus), sea urchin roe (Paracentrotus lividus), and beluga caviar (Huso huso) to assess their culinary potential. Results revealed that sensory quality is governed by the synergy between a matrix's lipid composition and endogenous antioxidant capacity. Post-treatment of refinery wastewater effluent using a combination of AOPs (H2O2 photolysis and catalytic wet peroxide oxidation) for possible water reuse. Comparison of low and medium pressure lamp performance.

The main aim of this work was to study the feasibility of multi-barrier treatment (MBT) consisting of filtration, hydrogen peroxide photolysis (H2O2/UVC) and catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) for post-treatment of petroleum refinery effluent. Also the possibility of water reuse or safe discharge was considered. The performance of MBT using medium (MP) and low (LP) pressure lamps was compared as well as operation and maintenance (O&M) cost. Decomposition of organic compounds was followed by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxyg

Unravelling Hidden Trophic Interactions Among Sea Urchin Juveniles and Macroinvertebrates by DNA Amplification.

Rocky reefs may shift between two distinct stable states: productive algal forests, characterised by high abundance and biodiversity of macrofauna, and impoverished barrens, dominated by overgrazing sea urchins. Barren states may persist despite the recovery of adult sea urchin predators, suggesting additional stabilising mechanisms. Sea urchin settlers equally colonise forests and barrens in large numbers, but in forests only a few of them reach adult size, suggesting that post-settlement predation might play a crucial role in determining sea urchin population density. Visual assessment of pr

Functional mimicry of sea urchin biomineralization proteins with CaCO3-binding peptides selected by phage display.

The intricate process of biomineralization, e.g. in sea urchins, involves the precise interplay of highly regulated mineralization proteins and the spatiotemporal coordination achieved through compartmentalization. However, the investigation of biomineralization effector molecules, e.g. proteins, is challenging, due to their very low abundance. Therefore, we investigate the functional mimicry in the bioinspired precipitation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) with artificial peptides selected from a peptide library by phage display based on peptide-binding to calcite and aragonite, respectively. The

Ocean acidification increases copper toxicity differentially in two key marine invertebrates with distinct acid-base responses.

Ocean acidification (OA) is expected to indirectly impact biota living in contaminated coastal environments by altering the bioavailability and potentially toxicity of many pH-sensitive metals. Here, we show that OA (pH 7.71; pCO2 1480 μatm) significantly increases the toxicity responses to a global coastal contaminant (copper ~0.1 μM) in two keystone benthic species; mussels (Mytilus edulis) and purple sea urchins (Paracentrotus lividus). Mussels showed an extracellular acidosis in response to OA and copper individually which was enhanced during combined exposure. In contrast, urchins maintai

The tube feet of sea urchins and sea stars contain functionally different mutable collagenous tissues.

Echinoderms possess mutable collagenous tissues (MCTs), which are capable of undergoing rapid changes in their passive mechanical properties mediated by secretions from a specific cell type, the juxtaligamental cell. In this study, the possible presence of MCTs in the tube feet of the echinoid Paracentrotus lividus and the asteroid Marthasterias glacialis was investigated by measuring their extensibility, tensile strength, stiffness and toughness after different treatments known to influence the physiological state of MCTs. Calcium removal reversibly induced a significant plasticization of the

Sea urchin immune cells and associated microbiota co-exposed to iron oxide nanoparticles activate cellular and molecular reprogramming that promotes physiological adaptation.

The innate immune system is the first player involved in the recognition/interaction with nanomaterials. Still, it is not the only system involved. The co-evolution of the microbiota with the innate immune system built an interdependence regulating immune homeostasis that is poorly studied. Herein, the simultaneous interaction of iron-oxide nanoparticles (Fe-oxide NPs), immune cells, and the microbiota associated with the blood of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus was explored by using a microbiota/immune cell model in vitro-ex vivo and a battery of complementary tools, including Raman spec

Quantification of the increase in Pb bioavailability to marine organisms caused by different types of DOM from terrestrial and river origin.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) has metal binding properties and decreases the concentration of free metal ions in the aquatic environments. However, humic acids (HA) have been shown to increase Pb bioavailability for marine invertebrates, including Pb toxicity to sea urchin embryos. The low solubility and other properties of commercially available HA, which may not be the most representative fraction of DOM in natural waters, limit the environmental relevance of these findings. The present study tested the effect of more soluble DOM, fulvic acids (FA) and DOM extracted from the Suwannee River

Combined effects of ammonium and pH on sea urchin embryogenesis: insights for sediment quality assessment.

Ammonium is a key component of coastal marine systems, originating from both natural and anthropogenic sources, with possible toxic effects on marine organisms depending on the concentration and pH. This study evaluates, for the first time, the combined effects of ammonium and seawater acidification on early development of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus under both laboratory conditions and exposure to environmental matrices derived by dredged sediments from harbor area. Embryos were incubated with increasing concentrations of ammonium in filtered seawater at pH 8.1 and 7.6, as well as in

Leopold Auerbach's heritage in the field of morphology and embryology with special emphasis on gametogenesis of invertebrates.

Plexus myentericus Auerbachi and Friedreich-Auerbach disease are widely used eponyms that are associated with eminent morphologist Leopold Auerbach (1828-1897), whose life is relatively little known due to limited access to his German-written XIX century biographies and lack of English biographical papers about him in world literature. Hereby we focused on hardly known achievements of Leopold Auerbach in the field of gametogenesis and embryology of invertebrates. Auerbach did not only confirm unicellularity of amoebas, which was previously discovered. He described cleavage of fertilized eggs o
