Pigmented vagal paraganglioma.

Paragangliomas are uncommon and those arising from the vagal trunk are rarer. Pigmented extra-adrenal paragangliomas are still rarer and reported sites of occurrence are the uterus, spine, retroperitoneum, bladder, mediastinum and orbit. The presence of abundant pigment in a cervical paraganglion has not been reported previously. We report one such unusual case of pigmented vagal paraganglioma that arose from the vagal trunk below the nodose ganglion, had massive central necrosis and showed hypovascularity on angiography. The unusual features and difficulties in the diagnosis of such cases are

Cerebellopontine angle paraganglioma.

BACKGROUND: Acoustic neuroma account for 80% of cerebellopontine angle tumors. Paraganglioma is a rare tumor in this region. OBJECTIVE: The authors report a case of cerebellopontine angle paraganglioma arising from the anterior inferior cerebellar artery. RESULTS: The clinical and radiologic features were indistinguishable from those of a neuroma, and only the intraoperative view showed a vascular tumor. Definitive diagnosis was made by histopathologic methods. CONCLUSIONS: This unique paraganglioma location may be explained by existing embryologic data. The minimal retrosigmoid approach, a

Pediatric extraadrenal paraganglioma.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric paraganglioma is rare and extraadrenal paraganglioma has not been characterized in children. METHODS: The authors reviewed the medical records and pathology samples of children with extraadrenal paraganglioma treated at our institution between December 1978 and September 2000. Clinical presentation, treatment, and outcome were evaluated. RESULTS: Eight patients (median age, 11.4 years) were identified, 4 were boys and none had a family history of paraganglioma or associated syndromes. Primary tumors arose in the retroperitoneum (n = 3), carotid body (n = 2), jugulotympa

Periampullary gangliocytic paraganglioma.

A33-year-old man presented with features of obstructive jaundice. Enterohepatic retrograde cholangiopancreatography examination revealed a periampullary growth. After pancreatoduodenectomy, histologic examination of the growth revealed three elements: a spindle cell element, large ganglion cells, and smaller paraganglioma-like cells arranged in small nests and groups. A diagnosis of gangliocytic paraganglioma was given. Gangliocytic paraganglioma is a rare benign duodenal tumor, with uncertain histogenesis. It is possible to identify the three components that are essential for its diagnosis on

[Pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma].

Pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma are neoplasias of the chromaffin cells that manifest themselves in some 40-60% of cases by symptoms of episodic freeing of catecholamines. They are the cause of stable and malign HTA in some 0.1-1% of cases and must be discounted in a study of the same. They most frequently affect males and their incidence increases with age. The symptomatic episodes are basically characterised by high blood pressure, migraines, sweating and palpitations, although they can have other multiple manifestations and even take a silent form in upto 40-50% of cases. They are frequen

[Cervical sympathetic paraganglioma].

A 24-year-old man presented with a long-standing history of Horner's complex and a slowly growing cervical mass. Duplex-sonography, angiography, and computed tomography revealed a hypervascularized tumor with well defined borders displacing the left carotid bifurcation medially. Operative and histological findings confirmed the preoperative diagnosis of cervical sympathetic paraganglioma.

Avascular tympanojugular paraganglioma.

The avascular paraganglioma described in this article appears to be the second such tumor reported in the international literature and the first to be reported in the tympanojugular region. Despite a highly suggestive history and clinical appearance, the tumor showed no signs of vascularization on radiologic studies. The pathologic postoperative study confirmed the diagnosis of paraganglioma with extensive stromal fibrosclerosis and without the typical well-vascularized thin fibrous septa. In the authors' opinion, this observation is notable because of the difficulties encountered in the corre

Altitude and paraganglioma.

The relationship between altitude and the development of paragangliomas (PGLs), rare tumors within the sympathetic nervous system has been suggested since the early 1970's. Here, we discuss how altitude, marked by lower barometric pressure and hypoxia (reduced oxygen partial pressure), may influence cancer rates. Chronic hypoxia triggers physiological changes, such as carotid body (CB) hyperplasia and a higher incidence of head and neck paragangliomas (HN-PGL) which has been reported in high-altitude populations, with a predominance of females among affected individuals. The involvement of hyp

Carotid body paraganglioma.

Carotid body paraganglioma is commonly asymptomatic, slow-growing, and nonfunctioning. With its relative contraindication to biopsy due to its high vascularity in nature, imaging characteristics are the key to help making the diagnosis. Treatment modalities, ranging from an observation to definitive treatment with surgery, should be selected on an individual basis.

Carotid Body Paraganglioma.

Carotid body paraganglioma (CBP) is a type neuroendocrine tumour arising from paraganglial chief cells of carotid body. Situated at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery, it constitutes 0.5% of all body tumours. Though CBP's is most common paraganglioma of head and neck it is a rare neoplasm and requires a thorough examination for a proper diagnosis and therapeutic management. Here, we present a case of 36 year old female patient with CBP in left side of the neck.

Periampullary Gangliocytic Paraganglioma.

BACKGROUND: Gangliocytic paraganglioma (GP) is rare and difficult to be differentiated from other periampullary neoplasms. The clinical characteristics and optimal treatment of periampullary GPs have not been clarified. METHODS: The data pool for the analysis comprised of cases of periampullary GP encountered in our institution and sporadic cases reported in the English literature. RESULTS: A total of 117 cases with periampullary GP were studied, including 2 from our institute, and among them, duodenal GP was the most common (53.0%). GP size ranged from 0.7 to 19.0 cm, with a median of 2.2 c

Malignant vagal paraganglioma.

The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss a new case of malignant vagal paraganglioma. A 38-year-old woman was referred for the assessment of a bilateral firm cervical mass. CT scans revealed a left cervical ovoid mass; contralaterally, a mass with a similar enhancement could be observed too. The tumor was surgically removed via a transcervical surgical approach, together with levels I to III lymph nodes. Definitive histopathological examination proved the diagnosis of malignant vagal paraganglioma with contralateral cervical lymph node metastasis. One year after surgery, a PET-CT an

Supraglottic laryngeal paraganglioma.

INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal paraganglioma is a rare, mainly supraglottic, tumor. CLINICAL CASE: A 67-year-old woman was operated on in June 2009 for supraglottic laryngeal paraganglioma, with simple postoperative course. DISCUSSION: Anatomopathologic features, malignant paraganglioma and the various possible treatments are presented and discussed. Surgical exeresis with an external approach should in our opinion remain the reference treatment, for optimal control of exeresis of this potentially hemorrhagic tumor with risk of recurrence in case of incomplete exeresis.

A mesenteric paraganglioma.

Mesenteric paraganglioma is a solitary primary paraganglioma that occurs in the mesentery. It is a rare and unusual tumor, especially in non-typical sites such as the inferior mesenteric artery. We incidentally diagnosed a pelvic mass in a 22-year-old woman, who had not experienced vomiting, headache or hypertension. She was found to have an immobile solid mass on the left side of her pelvis, adjacent to the upper segment of the uterus. CT scans revealed a well-defined solid and cystic ovoid mass adjacent to the sigmoid colon and the uterus. Tumor markers were within the normal range. Surgery

Primary cardiac paraganglioma.

A primary cardiac paraganglioma was identified in a 59-year-old Caucasian male who complained of palpitations and chest pain. The neoplasm (4.7 cm in diameter) was surgically excised from the left posterior atrium. Adriamycin-based adjuvant chemotherapy was administered. The patient returned to his normal activities. There is no evidence of recurrence or metastasis after two years and nine months.

[Bilateral carotid paraganglioma].

We report an unusual case of bilateral paraganglioma of the carotid. The tumor had been neglected for a long time and increased in volume during pregnancy, inducing compression and requiring surgical treatment. We focus on the therapeutic strategy: devascularization followed by percutaneous sclerosis before total surgical removal in a two-step procedure.

Malignant jugulotympanic paraganglioma.

Jugulotympanic paragangliomas are neoplasms that arise in the jugular bulb (glomus jugulare tumor) or temporal bone (glomus tympanicum tumor). They are histologically similar to carotid body tumors; both are derived from extra-adrenal paraganglia. Of only 20 metastases reported, five had biopsy-proved bone involvement. We present a review of the literature of metastatic jugulotympanic paragangliomas and report a case that recurred locally with regional metastases 10 years after initial presentation and metastasized to spine 13 years later. Histologic data are reviewed, and potential treatment

Cauda equina paraganglioma.

Two paragangliomas resected from the cauda equina had similar morphology, both containing cells having dense core secretory granules with no associated sustentacular or supporting cells. The cells were arranged in characteristic lobules that were surrounded by basement membrane and separated by a fibrovascular stroma. This tumor, although rarely found elsewhere in the central nervous system, does occur in the region of the filum terminale, and causes a clinical syndrome typical of tumors in that area.
