Connectivity of the brain at rest can reflect individual differences and impact behavioral outcomes, including memory. The present study investigated how culture influences functional connectivity with regions of the medial temporal lobe. In this study, 46 Americans and 59 East Asians completed a resting state scan after encoding pictures of objects. To investigate cross-cultural differences in resting state functional connectivity, left parahippocampal gyrus (anterior and posterior regions) and left hippocampus were selected as seed regions. These regions were selected, because they were prev

In Alzheimer's disease (AD), reports on the association between false recognition and brain structure have been inconsistent. In dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), no such association has been reported. This study aimed to identify brain regions associated with false recognition in AD and DLB by analyzing regional gray matter volume (rGMV). We included 184 patients with AD and 60 patients with DLB. The number of false recognitions was assessed using the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale' word recognition task. Brain regions associated with the number of false recognitions were examined by vox

Topographical disorientation is identified as a condition in which patients are unable to find their way in familiar surroundings, such as their home neighborhood or the admitting hospital after the onset of illness. I proposed to classify topographical disorientation into two categories: agnosia for streets (landmark agnosia) and defective root finding (heading disorientation). Patients with agnosia for streets are unable to identify familiar buildings and landscapes. They can, however, morphologically perceive them and remember their way around familiar areas. The lesions are located in the

Individuals with high trait anxiety form a non-clinical group with a predisposition for an anxiety-related bias in emotional and cognitive processing that is considered by some to be a prerequisite for psychiatric disorders. Anxious individuals tend to experience more worry under uncertainty, and processing uncertain information is an important, but often overlooked factor in anxiety. So, we decided to explore the brain correlates of processing uncertain information in individuals with high trait anxiety using the learn-test paradigm. Behaviorally, the percentages on memory test and the likeli

OBJECTIVE: Hyperthyroidism is frequently associated with pronounced neuropsychiatric symptoms such as impulsiveness, irritability, poor concentration, and memory impairments. Functional neuroimaging has revealed changes in cerebral metabolism in hyperthyroidism, but regional changes in cortical morphology associated with specific neurological deficits have not been studied so far. To investigate the pathophysiology underlying hyperthyroid-associated neural dysfunction, we compared grey matter volume (GMV) between adult hyperthyroid patients and matched healthy controls using voxel-based morpho

We describe a patient who selectively lost the ability to orient himself in the environment after a stroke involving the right parahippocampal gyrus. The neuropsychological assessment showed a specific pattern of impairment of topographical memory; the patient recognised and recalled environmental landmarks but was unable to recall their spatial location. This study provides evidence that different forms of topographical disorientation may be related to distinct mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction. Furthermore, neuroimaging data suggest that a lesion of the right parahippocampal gyrus is criti

OBJECTIVE: In previous studies, some brain areas, including parahippocampal gyrus, were suggested to be associated with panic disorder. Both panic disorder and somatoform disorders are associated with anxiety. This study sought to determine if there are shared neural activity underlying panic disorder and undifferentiated somatoform disorder.
METHOD: Sixteen nonmedicated patients with panic disorder, 16 nonmedicated patients with undifferentiated somatoform disorder, and 10 healthy subjects were scanned between February 2005 and August 2006. Diagnoses were made according to the Korean version

In the present study in the cat the parahippocampal cortex denotes the caudoventral part of the limbic lobe and is composed of the entorhinal and perirhinal cortices. The cytoarchitecture of these areas and their borders with adjacent cortical areas are briefly discussed. The organization of the cortical afferents of the parahippocampal cortex was studied with the aid of retrograde and anterograde tracing techniques. In order to identify the source of cortical afferents, injections of retrograde tracers such as wheat germ agglutinin conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP), or the fluo

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an important treatment option for patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the mechanisms of ECT in MDD are still unclear.
METHODS: Twenty-four patients with severe MDD and 14 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Eight ECT sessions were conducted for MDD patients using brief-pulse square-wave signal at bitemporal locations. To investigate the regional cerebral blood flow in MDD patients before and after ECT treatments by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI), the patients were scanned twice (before

123I-Iomazenil (123I-IMZ) and 123I-IMP imaging were performed in 5 patients with anxiety disorder (PAD) and 6 normal volunteers (NV). On 123I-IMZ delayed imaging, the 2 PAD showed abnormally decreased findings. In anxiety disorder, decreased accumulation on 123I-IMZ delayed images was seen in left hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus in one patient, in right frontal and temporal lobe and left occipital pole in the other. Compared with NV, PAD had lower 123I-IMZ uptake on delayed image in right upper and left lower frontal cortices, indicating the involvement of the benzodiazepine receptor com

Reclining on the lyra of the fornix, the dorsal hippocampal commissure (DHC) facilitates communication between the left and right hippocampi. Despite being a key commissural fiber bundle of the hippocampus, the DHC remains relatively underexplored in humans. Using high-resolution T1 and T2 magnetic resonance imaging in conjunction with High Angular Resolution Diffusion Imaging and Constrained Spherical Deconvolution tractography, we investigated if there are differences between the DHC of a sample of 54 healthy controls and 38 patients diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Area-specific and stimulation-dependent changes of human brain activation by selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) are an important issue for improved understanding of treatment mechanisms, given the frequent prescription of these drugs in depression and anxiety disorders. The aim of this neuroimaging study was to investigate differences in BOLD-signal caused by administration of the SSRIs escitalopram and citalopram using pharmacological functional magnetic resonance imaging (pharmaco-fMRI). Eighteen healthy subjects participated in a placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind stud

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is often considered as an augmentation of antipsychotic treatment for schizophrenia in drug-refractory cases. However, the mechanisms underlying the observed therapeutic effects are still not understood.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate changes in whole brain grey matter volume (GMV) before and after modified ECT. GMV was determined using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) whole brain analysis. Correlations of brain structural changes with clinical improvement were also investigated.
METHODS: Twenty-one schizophrenia patients treated with a full cours

A 71-year-old right-handed man presented writing and reading difficulties as well as naming difficulties. Neuropsychological examinations revealed mild fluent type aphasia accompanied by alexia and agraphia predominantly affecting kanji and also severe naming difficulties. Brain MRI showed cerebral subcortical hemorrhage extending from the anterior one-third of the left temporal lobe to the temporo-occipital junction involving the fusiform gyrus. The analysis of the several reported cases with severe alexia with agraphia for kanji including ours revealed a close correlation between the severit

Phobic fear is accompanied by intense bodily responses modulated by the amygdala. An amygdala moderated psychophysiological measure related to arousal is electrodermal activity. We evaluated the contributions of electrodermal activity to amygdala-parahippocampal regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) during phobic memory encoding in subjects with spider or snake phobia. Recognition memory was increased for phobia-related slides and covaried with rCBF in the amygdala and the parahippocampal gyrus. The covariation between parahippocampal rCBF and recognition was related to electrodermal activity su
