Comparative anatomy of the paratympanic organ (vitali organ) in the middle ear of birds and non-avian vertebrates: focus on alligators, parakeets and armadillos.

The paratympanic organ (PTO) in the middle ear has been described in numerous bird species, but little is known about the distribution of this presumed lateral line remnant in other vertebrate classes. Here we provide evidence for a PTO in juvenile alligators, and make the first detailed description of its location and relation to ligaments in the reptilian middle ear. The alligator PTO measures about 450 micro m in diameter. The alligator PTO contains hair cells whose cilia extend into a mucous substance within the lumen. The PTO connects though a ligament to the ear drum, suggesting that pre

Isolation of "pigeon-type" Chlamydia psittaci and detection of Chlamydia-related bacteria in Indian ring-necked parakeets (Psittacula krameri manillensis) in introduced flocks in urban area of Japan.

Introduced as an exotic species, Indian ring-necked parakeets (Psittacula krameri manillensis) are now established in urban areas of Japan in flocks exceeding 1000 birds. The release of exotic animals into the wild and the establishment of new populations have led to conservation and disease prevention challenges. With these parakeets sharing their habitat with humans, their feces accumulating in human living areas may pose a public health risk of transmitting Chlamydia psittaci. Herein, we investigated the prevalence of Chlamydiales in wild Indian ring-necked parakeets. We examined 66 faecal

Ectoparasite sharing among native and invasive birds in a metropolitan area.

Parasite-mediated competition has been reported to be one of the most harmful, although overlooked, impacts that alien species have on native ecosystems. Monk parakeets Myiopsitta monachus are successful invaders in Europe, where they have been introduced from South America. Colonial nests of these parrots may also host other species, e.g. the rock pigeon Columba livia forma domestica. In this work, we analysed the ectoparasite composition of monk parakeets in Barcelona (Spain) and we evaluated their potential role as parasite-mediated competitors, by comparing their parasitic load with that o

Morphological description and molecular characterization of Leucocytozoon australis sp. nov. (Apicomplexa: Haemosporida: Leucocytozoidae) infecting the Austral parakeet (Enicognathus ferrugineus), an endemic parrot from the southern Andes.

Birds of the order Psittaciformes are rarely infected by haemosporidian blood parasites in the wild, and the few records of Leucocytozoon in parrots correspond to host-generalist lineages detected in captive birds. Here we describe a new species, Leucocytozoon australis sp. nov., infecting the Austral parakeet (Enicognathus ferrugineus) in the southern Andes. We examined 18 individuals - 15 sampled for blood (preserved on FTA cards and as stained blood films) and 3 sampled for liver - collected between 2004 and 2021 at two regions separated by ∼1500 km (Navarino Island, Chile, and the Bariloch

Clinical case: Differential diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis can be quite challenging, even after careful clinical evaluation, imaging and pathological tests. This case report intends to demonstrate and discuss these difficulties, especially those concerning the differential diagnosis with chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old white male presented with shortness of breath, dry cough, fatigue and weight loss for two months. He was a former smoker and had regular exposure to a parakeet and poultry. Physical examination revealed bilateral basal crackles and chest i

Isolation of avian serotype 3 paramyxoviruses from imported caged birds in Israel.

Ten avian serotype 3 paramyxoviruses were isolated for the first time in Israel from passerine and psittacine imported caged birds. The birds were submitted for investigation of an illness characterized by nonspecific signs of weakness, anorexia, vomiting, and sneezing. In addition, only the parakeets developed specific neurologic signs. In bacteriologic and pathologic investigation, cachexia and diarrhea were observed in both groups of birds. In psittacines, considerable alterations were observed in lungs, liver, and spleen. Some nonviral pathogens were occasionally isolated. The isolates app

Psittacosis: the reservoir persists.

During a one-year period, 101 parakeets and parrots were submitted for laboratory examination. The birds were sick, dead, or from premises where morbidity had been observed. Tissue specimens from these birds were tested for the presence of Chlamydiapsittaci by two methods. A tissue culture system using McCoy cells treated with 5-iodo-2-deoxyuridine was found to be more sensitive than intraperitoneal inoculation of mice for isolation of the chlamydiae. Chlamydiae were recovered from 21 (34%) of 61 parakeets and 16 (40%) of 40 parrots tested. This high rate of infection persists despite the avai

Mutations in SLC45A2 lead to loss of melanin in parrot feathers.

Bird plumage coloration is a complex and multifactorial process that involves both genetic and environmental factors. Diverse pigment groups contribute to plumage variation in different birds. In parrots, the predominant green color results from the combination of 2 different primary colors: yellow and blue. Psittacofulvin, a pigment uniquely found in parrots, is responsible for the yellow coloration, while blue is suggested to be the result of light scattering by feather nanostructures and melanin granules. So far, genetic control of melanin-mediated blue coloration has been elusive. In this

Assessing animal welfare in invasive bird management: evidence for reduced stress hormones with lethal shooting.

Refinement of management actions for invasive species requires identifying methods that minimize physiological strain on target animals. Glucocorticoid concentrations are commonly used to assess the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in response to acute stress. Using monk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus) as an avian invader model, we aimed to assess the HPA response of two common control methods: shooting and live trapping followed by confinement until euthanasia. Plasma corticosterone (CORT), the primary avian glucocorticoid, was measured in 63 parakeets assigned to o

Novel adenoviruses from captive psittacine birds in Slovenia.

To assess the prevalence of adenoviruses in psittacine birds kept in Slovenia, 258 cloacal swabs were collected from different psittacine species and screened by a nested PCR with degenerate, consensus primers targeting the adenoviral DNA polymerase gene. Forty-two samples were found to be positive. By sequencing, 28 samples from 10 different parrot species were identified as the formerly described siadenovirus, psittacine adenovirus 2 (PsAdV-2). A second siadenovirus, a variant of PsAdV-5 (described earlier from Pacific parrotlet, sun parakeet, cockatiel and budgerigar) was found in seven bud

Chlamydophila psittaci transmission from pet birds to humans.

We studied zoonotic transmission of Chlamydophila psittaci in 39 breeding facilities for Psittaciformes (cockatoos, parrots, parakeets, lories) that frequently used antimicrobial drugs. Genotypes A or E/B were detected in 14.9% of humans at these facilities. Information on antimicrobial drug use in Psittaciformes and a C. psittaci vaccine are urgently required.

Gastrointestinal and external parasites of Enicognathus ferrugineus and Enicognathus leptorhynchus (Aves, Psittacidae) in Chile.

Parasite species are important components of biodiversity, as they provide valuable information about host health, evolutionary relationships, population structures, trophic interactions, the existence of environmental stresses, and climatic conditions. With the aim of describing the parasites associated with parrots of the genus Enicognathus Gray 1840 from central Chile, thirteen austral parakeets, Enicognathus ferrugineus, and five slender-billed parakeets, E. leptorhynchus, were examined between September 2007 and March 2014. The prevalence of ectoparasites and endoparasites was 88.9% and 2

Eye lesions in pet birds.

Amongst eye lesions in birds that died in quarantine, cataracts were the most common disorders (37/241, 15.4%), being prevalent in the annular pads of cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus), Amazon parrots (Amazona aestiva aestiva) and budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). The incidence in male birds was more than twice that in females. Deposition of crystals, mostly in the cornea, was the second most frequent lesion (21/293, 8.7%), mainly found in cockatiels, parakeets (Psittacula krameri manillensis), Amazon parrots (Amazona aestiva aestiva), budgerigars and finches (Poephila gouldiae gouldiae)

Can the same species of Platynosomum (Trematoda: Dicrocoeliidae) infect both mammalian and avian hosts?

The importance of platynosomiasis has increased in feline veterinary practice, but aspects related to the specificity of Platynosomum spp. in definitive hosts requires further study. Although morphological traits suggest that the same species, P. illiciens, may infect both birds and mammals, the synonymies previously proposed have not been widely accepted, likely because host specificity is assumed. In addition, the name P. fastosum has frequently been used for parasites recovered from mammals. In the present study, metacercariae (n= 100/animal) of P. illiciens recovered from lizards (Hemidact

Novel siadenovirus infection in a cockatiel with chronic liver disease.

A 15-year-old female cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) undergoing long term management for hepatopathy died and underwent necropsy. Microscopic findings were consistent with chronic liver disease characterized by distorted hepatic architecture, fibrosis and biliary proliferation. The additional finding of large intranuclear inclusion bodies within hepatocytes and renal tubular epithelium prompted diagnostic next generation sequencing. The assembled sequences isolated from pooled kidney and liver were related to siadenoviruses. The genus Siadenovirus, within the family Adenoviridae, includes se

Avian paramyxovirus serotype 3 infection in Neopsephotus, Cyanoramphus, and Neophema species.

An outbreak of avian paramyxovirus serotype 3 (APMV-3) infection occurred in a private bird collection consisting mainly of Neophema species. Two Bourke's parrots (Neopsephotus bourkii) and one red-crowned parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae) were examined after developing torticollis and circling. The 3 birds were euthanatized and submitted for necropsy. Brain and liver samples from the 3 birds were homogenized and inoculated into the allantoic cavity of 10-day-old embryonated specific-pathogen-free chicken eggs. An APMV-3 isolate replicated but did not induce embryonic mortality after up t

[A family outbreak of Chlamydia psittaci infection].

A family outbreak (3 cases) of Chlamydia psittaci infection was reported. The first case, a 56-year-old man was admitted with fever and general fatigue. Chest X-ray film revealed a consolidation in the right lower lung. One month before admission he had purchased 2 parakeets (chick) and one parakeet died. On learning of his history of contact with the chick, psittacosis was suspected. After administration of fixation (CF) antibody titer against chlamydia rose to 1:128 and IgA titer against Chlamydia psittaci by microimmunofluorescence antibody technique (MAF) rose to 1:128 in 21 days after adm
