Optimal detection of fetal chromosomal abnormalities by massively parallel DNA sequencing of cell-free fetal DNA from maternal blood.

BACKGROUND: Massively parallel DNA sequencing of cell-free fetal DNA from maternal blood can detect fetal chromosomal abnormalities. Although existing algorithms focus on the detection of fetal trisomy 21 (T21), these same algorithms have difficulty detecting trisomy 18 (T18). METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 1014 patients at 13 US clinic locations before they underwent an invasive prenatal procedure. All samples were processed to plasma, and the DNA extracted from 119 samples underwent massively parallel DNA sequencing. Fifty-three sequenced samples came from women with an abnormal

HPV genotypes in high grade cervical lesions and invasive cervical carcinoma as detected by two commercial DNA assays, North Carolina, 2001-2006.

BACKGROUND: HPV typing using formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) cervical tissue is used to evaluate HPV vaccine impact, but DNA yield and quality in FFPE specimens can negatively affect test results. This study aimed to evaluate 2 commercial assays for HPV detection and typing using FFPE cervical specimens. METHODS: Four large North Carolina pathology laboratories provided FFPE specimens from 299 women ages18 and older diagnosed with cervical disease from 2001 to 2006. For each woman, one diagnostic block was selected and unstained serial sections were prepared for DNA typing. Extracts f

Specx: a C++ task-based runtime system for heterogeneous distributed architectures.

Parallelization is needed everywhere, from laptops and mobile phones to supercomputers. Among parallel programming models, task-based programming has demonstrated a powerful potential and is widely used in high-performance scientific computing. Not only does it allow efficient parallelization across distributed heterogeneous computing nodes, but it also allows for elegant source code structuring by describing hardware-independent algorithms. In this article, we present Specx, a task-based runtime system written in modern C++. Specx supports distributed heterogeneous computing by simultaneously

Polarizer-assisted pupillometry through closed eyelids, overcoming pupil position dependence.

SIGNIFICANCE: Accurate monitoring of pupil size and gaze direction is critical in clinical and research contexts; however, current pupillometry methods require open eyes, limiting their use in patients under anesthesia, sedation, or sleep. Short-wave infrared (SWIR) imaging enables noninvasive closed-eye pupillometry, but challenges remain due to eyelid glare, gaze variability, and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). AIM: We aimed to enhance closed-eye pupillometry by integrating polarization filters into the SWIR imaging system and developing improved algorithms for pupil localization and gaze

TOPIC: A Parallel Association Paradigm for Multi-Object Tracking under Complex Motions and Diverse Scenes.

Video data and algorithms have been driving advances in multi-object tracking (MOT). While existing MOT datasets focus on occlusion and appearance similarity, complex motion patterns are widespread yet overlooked. To address this issue, we introduce a new dataset called BEE24 to highlight complex motions. Identity association algorithms have long been the focus of MOT research. Existing trackers can be categorized into two association paradigms: single-feature paradigm (based on either motion or appearance feature) and serial paradigm (one feature serves as secondary while the other is primary

A Novel Integration of Face-Recognition Algorithms with a Soft Voting Scheme for Efficiently Tracking Missing Person in Challenging Large-Gathering Scenarios.

The probability of losing vulnerable companions, such as children or older ones, in large gatherings is high, and their tracking is challenging. We proposed a novel integration of face-recognition algorithms with a soft voting scheme, which was applied, on low-resolution cropped images of detected faces, in order to locate missing persons in a challenging large-crowd gathering. We considered the large-crowd gathering scenarios at Al Nabvi mosque Madinah. It is a highly uncontrolled environment with a low-resolution-images data set gathered from moving cameras. The proposed model first performs

Inherent smoothness of intensity patterns for intensity modulated radiation therapy generated by simultaneous projection algorithms.

The efficient delivery of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) depends on finding optimized beam intensity patterns that produce dose distributions, which meet given constraints for the tumour as well as any critical organs to be spared. Many optimization algorithms that are used for beamlet-based inverse planning are susceptible to large variations of neighbouring intensities. Accurately delivering an intensity pattern with a large number of extrema can prove impossible given the mechanical limitations of standard multileaf collimator (MLC) delivery systems. In this study, we apply Ci

Additive convergence for visuomotor decisions.

In a recent study, Slangewal et al. explored principles of visuomotor decision-making in larval zebrafish. Visuomotor choices were revealed to be largely additive, integrating visual motion, luminance level, and luminance change during cue conflict. Brain-wide imaging mapped parallel feature circuits within the optic tectum that converge in the anterior hindbrain. Single-cell identity and morphology analyses refined this map, linking behavioral algorithms to candidate circuit implementations.

A Stepwise Algorithmic Approach and External Validation Study for Noninvasive Prediction of Advanced Fibrosis in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Advanced F3-4 fibrosis predicts liver-related mortality in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Noninvasive tests, designed to rule in/out advanced fibrosis, are limited by indeterminates, necessitating biopsy. We aimed to determine whether stepwise combinations of noninvasive serum-based tests and elastography (VCTE) could predict F3-4, reduce indeterminates, and decrease liver biopsies. METHODS AND RESULTS: Five hundred forty-one biopsy-proven NAFLD cases were identified between 2010 and 2018 from two Canadian centers. Characteristics of training (n = 407)/validati

Combining ADA, IFN-γ, and IL-6 as host biomarkers enhances diagnosis of paucibacillary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: Accurate diagnosis of paucibacillary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis remains a major global challenge, as conventional pathogen-focused methods often lack sensitivity. This study aimed to evaluate whether combining host-derived immune biomarkers could improve diagnostic accuracy. METHODS: In a retrospective diagnostic accuracy study of 605 participants, nucleic acid amplification tests served as the reference standard. We assessed the performance of adenosine deaminase, interferon-gamma, and interleukin-6 individually and in combination using receiver operating characteristic anal

Image microarrays derived from tissue microarrays (IMA-TMA): New resource for computer-aided diagnostic algorithm development.

BACKGROUND: Conventional tissue microarrays (TMAs) consist of cores of tissue inserted into a recipient paraffin block such that a tissue section on a single glass slide can contain numerous patient samples in a spatially structured pattern. Scanning TMAs into digital slides for subsequent analysis by computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) algorithms all offers the possibility of evaluating candidate algorithms against a near-complete repertoire of variable disease morphologies. This parallel interrogation approach simplifies the evaluation, validation, and comparison of such candidate algorithms. A

Grid powered nonlinear image registration with locally adaptive regularization.

Multi-subject non-rigid registration algorithms using dense deformation fields often encounter cases where the transformation to be estimated has a large spatial variability. In these cases, linear stationary regularization methods are not sufficient. In this paper, we present an algorithm that uses a priori information about the nature of imaged objects in order to adapt the regularization of the deformations. We also present a robustness improvement that gives higher weight to those points in images that contain more information. Finally, a fast parallel implementation using networked person

The control of a parallel hybrid-electric propulsion system for a small unmanned aerial vehicle using a CMAC neural network.

A Simulink model, a propulsion energy optimization algorithm, and a CMAC controller were developed for a small parallel hybrid-electric unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The hybrid-electric UAV is intended for military, homeland security, and disaster-monitoring missions involving intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR). The Simulink model is a forward-facing simulation program used to test different control strategies. The flexible energy optimization algorithm for the propulsion system allows relative importance to be assigned between the use of gasoline, electricity, and rechargin

Energy-Efficient Tree-Based EEG Artifact Detection.

In the context of epilepsy monitoring, EEG artifacts are often mistaken for seizures due to their morphological simi-larity in both amplitude and frequency, making seizure detection systems susceptible to higher false alarm rates. In this work we present the implementation of an artifact detection algorithm based on a minimal number of EEG channels on a parallel ultra-low-power (PULP) embedded platform. The analyses are based on the TUH EEG Artifact Corpus dataset and focus on the temporal electrodes. First, we extract optimal feature models in the frequency domain using an automated machine l

Advances in CrossBoss/Stingray use in antegrade dissection reentry from the Asia Pacific Chronic Total Occlusion Club.

Antegrade dissection reentry with Stingray device (Boston Scientific, Marlborough, MA) accounts for 20-34% of the chronic total occlusion (CTO) cases in the various hybrid operators' CTO registries and is an important component of CTO crossing algorithms. The Stingray device can facilitate antegrade dissection and reentry, however its use is low outside North America and Europe. The Asia Pacific CTO Club along with three experience Stingray operators from the US, Europe and India, created an algorithm guiding use of the CrossBoss and Stingray catheter. This APCTO Stingray algorithm defines whe

A Novel Tet-LDN Based Feature Extraction and Parallel Convolutional LeNet for Breast Cancer Detection and Classification Using Histopathological Images.

One of the main reasons for the high death rate in today's world is Breast Cancer (BC), which affects women all over the world. This work proposes a novel Parallel Convolutional-LeNet (PConv-LeNet) technique for BC detection and classification employing Histopathological images. Originally, the input histopathological image is obtained from a particular dataset, and image denoising is performed to remove the noise in the images using the Medav Filter. After image denoising, blood cell segmentation is carried out using the Parallel Reverse Attention Network (PraNet). Afterwards, feature extract

Numerical Simulation of Blood Flows in Patient-specific Abdominal Aorta with Primary Organs.

The abdominal aorta is the largest artery in the abdominal cavity that supplies blood flows to vital organs through the complex visceral arterial branches, including the celiac trunk (the liver, stomach, spleen, etc.), the renal arteries (the kidneys) and the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries (the small and large intestine, pancreas, etc.). An accurate simulation of blood flows in this network of arteries is important for the understanding of the hemodynamics in various organs of healthy and diseased patients, but the computational cost is very high. As a result, most researchers choos

Multiway Calibration Strategies in Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy: A Proposal.

In this study, a new approach to laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) data modeling using multiway algorithms was investigated. Two case studies, parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and unfolded-partial least-squares with residual bilinearization (U-PLS/RBL) algorithms were used in (1) the determination of Al, Cu, and Fe in samples of reference material of printed circuit board (PCB) from electronic waste and (2) the determination of Ca, K, and Mg in samples of a human mineral supplement, where depth was used to obtain multidimensional data in the first case and delay-time in the second.

Point convolutional neural network algorithm for Ising model ground state research based on spring vibration.

The ground state search of the Ising model can be used to solve many combinatorial optimization problems. Under the current computer architecture, an Ising ground state search algorithm suitable for hardware computing is necessary for solving practical problems. Inspired by the potential energy conversion of the springs, we propose the Spring-Ising Algorithm, a point convolutional neural network algorithm for ground state search based on the spring vibration model. Spring-Ising Algorithm regards the spin as a moving mass point connected to a spring and establishes the equation of motion for al
