First characterization of somatic proteins of trematodes of the family Paramphistomidae by SDS-PAGE isolated from cattle from the Cajamarca region, Peru.

BACKGROUND: Paramphistomosis is a gastrointestinal parasitic disease of worldwide distribution, with higher prevalence in tropical and subtropical regions. Its biological cycle has a chronic phase caused by adult trematodes that adhere to the rumen mucosa and a highly pathogenic phase caused by immature trematodes, which induce acute parasitic gastroenteritis. Studies related to the parasite are very scarce in the region of Cajamarca, Peru, regarding the characterisation of antigenic proteins, considering that this parasitosis is endemic and has emerging characteristics. AIM: The study aimed

Differentiating paramphistome species in cattle using DNA barcoding coupled with high-resolution melting analysis (Bar-HRM).

Paramphistomosis is caused by paramphistome or amphistome parasites, including Fischoederius elongatus, Gastrothylax crumenifer, Orthocoelium parvipapillatum, and Paramphistomum epiclitum. The control and prevention of these parasite outbreaks are difficult because of the wide occurrence of these species. Besides, the clinical manifestations and their egg characteristics are similar to those of other intestinal flukes in the paramphistome group, leading to misdiagnosis. Here, we employed DNA barcoding using NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone, alpha 1) (ND1) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI)

Infection of Lymnaea truncatula and Lymnaea glabra by Fasciola hepatica and Paramphistomum daubneyi in farms of central France.

Natural infection of Lymnaea glabra and Lymnaea truncatula by Fasciola hepatica and/or Paramphistomum daubneyi was studied at two periods of risk (June-July and September-October) in 11 French farms known for their high prevalences of F. hepatica infection in ruminants. A total of 1,778 L. truncatula and 2,396 L. glabra measuring 6 mm or more in height were collected to determine the prevalence of natural infection with F. hepatica and P. daubneyi. The role of four factors, i.e. season, snail co-infection (F. hepatica-P. daubneyi), ruminant host and the existence of single or mixed intermediat

[Parasite egg development during methane fermentation].

Investigations were carried out on the development of the most frequently encountered parasitic diseases in farm animals raised under industrial conditions. The parasite eggs were obtained from great numbers of animals with fascioliasis, dicrocoeliasis, ascaridiasis, and paramphistomum infection, etc., and were mixed with fecal homogenate in a lagoon of a fermentor in the conditions of methane fermentation. It was found that the parasite eggs in such conditions retained their vitality in a state of anabiosis. After the fermentation procedure was over and the manure compost mass was spread in t

Prevalence, molecular characterization, and therapeutic management of Buxtonella sulcata in buffaloes from Western Uttar Pradesh, India.

Buxtonella sulcata is an opportunistic protozoan parasite commonly affecting ruminants, with significant infection rates reported in cattle and buffaloes worldwide. This large cyst-forming ciliate shares morphological similarities with Balantidium coli, a known parasite of humans and pigs. In the present study, 512 fecal samples were collected from diarrheic and non-diarrheic buffaloes across five districts Meerut, Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, and Hapur in Western Uttar Pradesh, India, between April 2023 and March 2024. Samples were subjected to both microscopic examination and polymera

Calicophoron daubneyi (Paramphistomidae) in deer of the Šumava National Park, Czech Republic - Consequence of prevalent rumen fluke infection in cattle.

A substantial parallel increase in prevalence and geographical spread of the rumen fluke, Calicophoron daubneyi, in livestock in western and central Europe has been recognized in the recent past. In the course of the examination of rectum feces of 471 red deer (Cervus elaphus) and one sika deer (Cervus nippon) from the Fascioloides magna endemic Šumava National Park in the years 2021 and 2022, rumen fluke eggs were detected in four red deer (0.8%) and the sika deer and identified as eggs of C. daubneyi by molecular analysis. Subsequent examination of rectal fecal samples of 247 beef cattle fro

Comparison of Mini-FLOTAC, Flukefinder and sedimentation techniques for detection and quantification of Fasciola hepatica and Calicophoron daubneyi eggs using spiked and naturally infected bovine faecal samples.

BACKGROUND: Fasciolosis (Fasciola hepatica) and paramphistomosis (Calicophoron daubneyi) are two important infections of livestock. Calicophoron daubneyi is the predominant Paramphistomidae species in Europe, and its prevalence has increased in the last 10-15 years. In Italy, evidence suggests that the prevalence of F. hepatica in ruminants is low in the southern part, but C. daubneyi has been recently reported at high prevalence in the same area. Given the importance of reliable tools for liver and rumen fluke diagnosis in ruminants, this study evaluated the diagnostic performance of the Mini

Paramphistomum daubneyi: characteristics of infection in three lymnaeid species.

Experimental infections of two South American lymnaeids (Lymnaea neotropica and L. viatrix var. ventricosa) with Paramphistomum daubneyi were carried out to determine if these snail species could sustain larval development of this digenean and, if so, to specify their potential for cercarial production. A French population of Galba truncatula infected and raised according to the same protocol served as controls. In both experiments, prevalence of P. daubneyi infections in snails did not significantly differ from each other. In snail groups evaluated for cercarial shedding (first experiment), a

Prevalence and intensity of infections in the lymnaeid snail Omphiscola glabra experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica, Fascioloides magna and Paramphistomum daubneyi.

Single and double infections of juvenile Omphiscola glabra (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae) with Paramphistomum daubneyi and/or Fasciola hepatica were carried out to determine the redial burden and cercarial production in snails dissected at day 60 or at day 75 post-exposure (p.e.) in the laboratory at 20 degrees C. The results were compared with those obtained with single-miracidium infections by Fascioloides magna. Compared to F. hepatica, low values were noted at day 75 p.e. for the prevalence of snail infections with P. daubneyi (4.6-8.3% instead of 23.6-25.9%), the total number of free rediae (10

Decoy effect and host infection by miracidia within snail communities.

The effect of experimental non-host snail (NHS) communities on the infection of Lymnaea truncatula with Paramphistomum daubneyi and Fasciola hepatica miracidia was studied. The results obtained indicated that NHS had variable effects on basic population parameters of host infection. Specifically, NHS were able to produce aggregation of sporocyst number/snail in the experimental host populations. Proposed hypotheses for decoy effect mechanisms failed to explain completely the experimental results. A new mechanism is suggested, based on a distance response of miracidia to snail chemo-attractants

Integrated evaluation of pineapple peel juice powder as a potential agro-waste-derived flukicidal preparation against Paramphistomum spp.

Paramphistomiasis is a neglected trematode infection affecting tropical livestock and remains inadequately addressed due to limited therapeutic options and underdeveloped evaluation frameworks. This study conducted an integrated in vitro-in vivo evaluation of the flukicidal activity and field efficacy of pineapple peel juice powder (PPJP), a whole-matrix agro-waste-derived peparation, against Paramphistomum spp. In vitro activity was assesed using adult motility assays (AMA) across a concentration gradient, and the 50% lethal concentration (LC₅₀) was estimated using a four-parameter logistic m

Molecular detection of Fasciola, Schistosoma and Paramphistomum species from freshwater snails occurring in Gauteng and Free State provinces, South Africa.

Trematodiases are diseases caused by snail-borne trematode parasites that infect both animals and humans. Fascioliasis, schistosomiasis and paramphistomosis are some of these diseases and they affect millions of livestock, leading to significant economic losses. The aim of the study was to document freshwater snails occurring in selected study sites in the Free State and Gauteng provinces as well as identify and detect larval trematodes that they harbour. Samples were collected from a total of five study sites within two provinces of South Africa. Morphological features were used to identify s

DNA barcoding of rumen flukes (Paramphistomidae) from bovines in Germany and Austria.

Rumen flukes have received growing veterinary attention in western and central Europe during the past two decades because of an increase in prevalence of infection in cattle and sheep, including cases of severe clinical disease. Historically, rumen fluke infections in Europe were assumed to be caused mainly by Paramphistomum cervi (or species, which were later considered to be synonymous with P. cervi), but more recently molecular studies demonstrated Calicophoron daubneyi to be the predominating species. For the present investigation, adult rumen flukes isolated from 23 cattle originating fro

First report on parasites of European beavers in the Slovak Republic.

European beaver (Castor fiber L. 1758) is the biggest rodent living in Europe. It is a semi-aquatic animal known for building dams and burrows. European beaver is a potential host for a wide range of parasites and other infectious diseases. In Slovakia, there is an increasing number of beavers but the data about their parasitic fauna are missing. Our work is the first documentation about the beaver's parasitofauna in Slovakia. In a 1-year study, we collected and examined 19 beaver fecal samples from the vicinity of beaver burrows inhabiting three particular localities at the Danube, Topľa, and

Faecal examination of Fasciola eggs fixed with formalin solution using the beads technique.

Faecal examination for Fasciola eggs which were preserved in 5% and 10% formalin and TAF solutions for 6 years was carried out using the Beads technique. The morphological characters and the distinctive yellowish color of Fasciola eggs were retained and appeared similar to those of fresh eggs. The mean egg recovery rate of eggs in TAF solution was significantly lower than the others (P < 0.01). The egg recovery rates from 5% and 10% formalin samples were 57.2% and 60.8%, respectively, and these values were similar to the value of 58.8% for fresh Fasciola eggs in cattle faeces. Calicophoron daubneyi (Dinnik, 1962) (Digenea) in beef and dairy cattle in the Czech Republic: prevalence and drug efficacy.

A total of 1,724 beef and 2,941 dairy cattle older than one year from 66 beef and 67 dairy farms in the Czech Republic were examined for the presence of rumen and liver fluke eggs in 2019-2022. Out of 227 positive animals, all were positive for paramphistome and five for fasciolid eggs. Molecular analysis of the ITS2 rDNA revealed the presence of Calicophoron daubneyi (Dinnik, 1962) and Fasciola hepatica Linnaeus, 1758. Faecal egg count (FEC) showed low infection intensity (12 EPG) in animals infected with F. hepatica and high variability in C. daubneyi infections (2-589 EPG). Efficacy of oxyc

Rumen Fluke in Great Britain.

Calicophoron daubneyi is the primary rumen fluke (RF) found in Europe in ruminants and infection is more common in cattle than in sheep. The incidence of RF has appeared to increase greatly throughout Europe in the last 10-15 years, with outbreaks of clinical paramphistomosis confirmed in ruminants in many countries, including Great Britain and Ireland. Clinical disease, due to immature stages developing in the small intestine, appears infrequently but can occur, usually in the autumn or winter within weeks of beginning to graze wet pasture. Although disease due to adult RF has not been proven

A phylogenetic study of the cecal amphistome Zygocotyle lunata (Trematoda: Zygocotylidae), with notes on the molecular systematics of Paramphistomoidea.

Zygocotyle lunata inhabits the caecum of birds and mammals from the American continent. This amphistome parasite is easily maintained in the laboratory and serves as a model organism in life-cycle studies, but it has seldom been studied using molecular data. Neither the position of Z. lunata in the superfamily Paramphistomoidea nor the monophyly of the Zygocotylidae has been evaluated with molecular phylogenetic methods. In the present study, adult specimens of Z. lunata obtained experimentally in mice from Brazil were submitted to molecular studies. Partial sequences of nuclear (1261 bp of 28

Observations on the biology, epidemiology and economic relevance of rumen flukes (Paramphistomidae) in cattle kept in a temperate environment.

There is concern about the probable recent introduction, increased prevalence and potential economic impact of rumen fluke infection of United Kingdom cattle. A study of 339 cattle slaughtered in a Scottish red meat abattoir was undertaken with the aims of describing the prevalence and geographical distribution of rumen fluke infection, estimating its effect on production, and evaluating faecal egg counts (FECs) as a tool to diagnose infection in live animals and study the epidemiology of the disease. The overall proportion of cattle consigned to the abattoir from northern United Kingdom with
