An Effective Microcurrent Stimulation Method for Inducing Non-Pharmacological Parasympathetic Nervous System Activity for Pain Relief.

This study aims to propose a non-pharmacological approach to pain relief by analyzing changes in electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters following transcutaneous microcurrent stimulation generated according to the pulse train characteristics of intensity and frequency. Therefore, we analyze and interpret stimulation methods that induce parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity, which is the clinical basis for pain relief. There were 14 male participants, with a height of 176.08 ± 7.05 cm, a weight of 77.07 ± 10.32 Kg, and an age of 26.35 ± 1.71 years, and 10 female participants, with a height o

Meta-analytic evidence for decreased heart rate variability in chronic pain implicating parasympathetic nervous system dysregulation.

Both sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are involved in regulating pain states. The activity of these systems seems to become disturbed in states of chronic pain. This disruption in autonomic balance can be measured through the assessment of heart rate variability (HRV), that is, the variability of the interval between consecutive heart beats. However, there is yet to be a systematic evaluation of the body of literature concerning HRV across several chronic pain conditions. Moreover, modern meta-analytical techniques have never been used to validate and consolidate the extent to w

Parasympathetic nervous system in patients with Graves' disease determined by R-R interval variations on electrocardiogram.

Little is known about an interrelationship between thyroid dysfunction and parasympathetic nervous system. R-R interval variations on electrocardiogram (ECG) have been considered to be reliable indicator reflecting abnormalities of parasympathetic nervous system. We have attempted to apply this technique in patients with hyperthyroidism. Studies were conducted in 60 healthy subjects and 57 patients with Graves' disease. R-R interval variations were expressed as coefficient of variation on 100 heart rates at the time of resting (CVq) and deep respiration (CVd). A negative correlation between R-

Emotion-related alcohol use motives are associated with greater parasympathetic nervous system responses to acute challenge.

Individuals' psychophysiological responses to stress are related to alcohol use initiation and frequency, but it remains unclear whether these responses are related to drinking motives among alcohol users. Parasympathetic Nervous System Dysfunction, as Identified by Pupil Light Reflex, and Its Possible Connection to Hearing Impairment.

ContextAlthough the pupil light reflex has been widely used as a clinical diagnostic tool for autonomic nervous system dysfunction, there is no systematic review available to summarize the evidence that the pupil light reflex is a sensitive method to detect parasympathetic dysfunction. Meanwhile, the relationship between parasympathetic functioning and hearing impairment is relatively unknown.ObjectivesTo 1) review the evidence for the pupil light reflex being a sensitive method to evaluate parasympathetic dysfunction, 2) review the evidence relating hearing impairment and parasympathetic acti

The role of the parasympathetic nervous system in visually induced motion sickness: systematic review and meta-analysis.

The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) has been implicated in the development of visually induced motion sickness. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of visually induced motion sickness on validated parameters of PNS tone. Methods followed PRISMA recommendations. Controlled trials reporting validated measures of PNS tone in visually induced motion sickness in healthy adults were included. One reviewer performed the screening of articles and data extraction, and two reviewers independently performed methodological evaluation. Data we

Autonomic nervous system regulation of murine immune responses as assessed by local surgical sympathetic and parasympathetic denervation.

The effect of local sympathetic denervation on immune responses of submaxillary lymph nodes (SmLN) of mice was examined in animals subjected to unilateral superior cervical ganglionectomy (SCGx). Norepinephrine (NE) content in ipsilateral SmLN decreased by 90% 7-20 days after SCGx, while bilateral SCGx resulted in a 91% decrease of SmLN NE content. SmLN of mice subjected to unilateral SCGx exhibited greater plaque-forming cell (PFC) response than the innervated contralateral SmLN, when challenged i.d. or i.p. with sheep red blood cells (SRBC) 10-20 days after surgery. In mice challenged with S

Leveraging parasympathetic nervous system activity to study risk for psychopathology: The special case of callous-unemotional traits.

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits are implicated in the development of severe and persistent antisocial behavior, and appear to arise from distinct behavioral, temperament, physiological, and neural risk factors to other types of externalizing psychopathology. Although existing etiological models have attempted to characterize specific mechanisms underlying the emergence of CU traits, prior empirical work is plagued by a host of inconsistent results. This inconsistency is particularly apparent in research that has investigated variation in physiological functioning, arousal, and reactivity. In t

Aging Alters the Relative Contributions of the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous System to Blood Pressure Control in Women.

Autonomic support of blood pressure increases with age in humans. Large differences exist in the dose of trimethaphan (TMP) required for ganglionic blockade in young and older women. We asked whether differences in the dose of TMP required to achieve ganglionic blockade are because of differences in the relative contributions of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system in control of blood pressure with age. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (microneurography, peroneal nerve), heart rate (HR), and blood pressure were recorded before and during incremental doses of TMP camsylate until

Kamikihito improves cancer-related fatigue by restoring balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related fatigue is one of the most prevalent symptoms that patients with cancer experience, but the mechanisms underlying it are unknown. We aimed to quantify and mechanistically evaluate the improvement in fatigue related to administration of the Kampo medicine, Kamikihito. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Initially, we recruited outpatients with urological diseases and compared fatigue levels of 37 patients with cancer with a control group of 23 volunteers who had recovered completely from cancer or who were being treated for dysuria. Fatigue level was estimated using an autonomic

Stress-induced changes in the function of the parasympathetic nervous system are mimicked by blocking GABA in the CNS of the cat.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of blockade of receptors for gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the forebrain, on vagal activity to the stomach and heart. This was done by injecting bicuculline (50 micrograms) into the lateral ventricle of the brain and restricting the drug to the forebrain ventricles by cannulating the cerebral aqueduct. Studies were performed in chloralose-anesthetized cats and gastric motility was monitored using extraluminal force transducers, sutured to the antrum and pylorus. Cardiac vagal activity was determined by noting the sinus bradycardia that

Long-term fasting-induced parasympathetic and sympathetic autonomic nervous system modulation in a subgroup of the GENESIS study.

Parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems are known to be modulated during long-term fasting, but temporal dynamics and persistence post-fasting are unclear. We analyzed daily heart rate variability (HRV), as a reflection of autonomic nervous system balance, as an exploratory analysis, in 16 participants from the GENESIS trial following the Buchinger fasting protocol (12 days of ~250 kcal/day). HRV was assessed via Polar H10 sensors daily 7 days before, during and 7 days after fasting. Overall, fasting led to an increase in parasympathetic activity, as indicated by higher root mean squar

Adverse childhood experiences and autonomic regulation in response to acute stress: the role of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: After a previous report demonstrated blunted heart rate (HR) reactivity in association with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) [Voellmin, A., Winzeler, K., Hug, E., Wilhelm, F. Integrative Neuroimmune Role of the Parasympathetic Nervous System, Vagus Nerve and Gut Microbiota in Stress Modulation: A Narrative Review.

It has been demonstrated that prolonged exposure to stress engenders a plethora of neuropsychiatric, immune and metabolic disorders. However, its pathophysiology transcends the conventional hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This review addresses the central question of how integrated neural and microbial pathways regulate stress responses and resilience. We present a model in which the parasympathetic nervous system (particularly the vagus nerve) and the gut microbiota interact to form a bidirectional neuroimmune network that modulates the HPA axis, immune function, neurotransmitter b

Retarded growth and deficits in the enteric and parasympathetic nervous system in mice lacking GFR alpha2, a functional neurturin receptor.

Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and a related protein, neurturin (NTN), require a GPI-linked coreceptor, either GFR alpha1 or GFR alpha2, for signaling via the transmembrane Ret tyrosine kinase. We show that mice lacking functional GFR alpha2 coreceptor (Gfra2-/-) are viable and fertile but have dry eyes and grow poorly after weaning, presumably due to malnutrition. While the sympathetic innervation appeared normal, the parasympathetic cholinergic innervation was almost absent in the lacrimal and salivary glands and severely reduced in the small bowel. Neurite outgrowth and

Children with developmental dyslexia show elevated parasympathetic nervous system activity at rest and greater cardiac deceleration during an empathy task.

Reading difficulties are the hallmark feature of dyslexia, but less is known about other areas of functioning. Previously, we found children with dyslexia exhibited heightened emotional reactivity, which correlated with better social skills. Whether emotional differences in dyslexia extend to the parasympathetic nervous system-an autonomic branch critical for attention, social engagement, and empathy-is unknown. Here, we measured autonomic nervous system activity in 24 children with dyslexia and 24 children without dyslexia, aged 7 - 12, at rest and during a film-based empathy task. At rest, c

Coordination impairment between the somatic and parasympathetic nervous system divisions in the human sacral micturition centre following spinal cord injury.

The detrusor-sphincteric dyssynergia is analyzed by comparing the natural impulse patterns of secondary muscle spindle afferents (SP2) contributing to continence (SP2 fibre activity changes are similar to detrusor pressure changes) and sphincteric motoneurons in a brain-dead human with those in patients with spinal cord injuries. In the brain-dead the sphincteric motoneurons, subserving continence, were inhibited at a time, when preganglionic parasympathetic efferents and a SP2 fibre increased their activity (physiologic). In paraplegics the sphincteric motoneurons were not inhibited (pathophy

Childhood psychological maltreatment and social anxiety in college students: The roles of parasympathetic nervous system activity and parent-child separation experience.

BACKGROUND: Childhood psychological maltreatment is a risk factor for social anxiety in adulthood. Parent-child separation, as one of the most serious adversities in early life, may exacerbate the risk of psychological maltreatment and influence the interactions between childhood psychological maltreatment and biological sensitivity to stress in relation to social anxiety. However, there has been a dearth of work on this issue. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the interactive effects between childhood psychological maltreatment and parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity on social anx
