Health-related quality of life in children with sickle cell disease: child and parent perception.

Health-related quality of life (HRQL) is an outcome that may be used to measure the impact of sickle cell disease on the child and their family but has not been routinely assessed in this disease. The objective of this study was to describe the HRQL of children with sickle cell disease as reported by the parent and the child, to compare the relationship between the two, and to determine the association of parent, child and disease characteristics on HRQL. Ninety-five parents completed the Child Health Questionnaire (CHQ)-Parent Form28 and 53 children completed the CHQ-Child Form87. Compared wi

Agreement between schoolchildren and their parents on rating the child's oral health-related quality of life.

The perceptions of parents/caregivers regarding their children's oral health can influence the standard of care and decision-making regarding oral health. The children's perspective on their own oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) may differ from the parents/caregivers' views. This cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the agreement between the perceptions of parents/caregivers and schoolchildren regarding OHRQoL. It was conducted with a sample of children between 8 and 11 years old and their parents/caregivers from Pelotas. Children answered the Child Perceptions Questionnaire 8-10

Parent-Child Communication regarding Sport-Related Concussion: An Application of the Theory of Planned Behavior.

Extant research has discussed the importance of social climates surrounding sport-related concussion (SRC) reporting, especially the need to address parents/guardians' role in concussion management. This study explores parents/guardians' intentions toward SRC-related conversations with their children and their seeking of conversational resources via the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Data collected from 292 parents/guardians of 1st-12th graders who play contact sports are examined via a structural equation model. The results indicate that parents/guardians' intention toward communicating wi

Maternal factors related to parenting practices, developmental expectations, and perceptions of child behavior problems.

Parenting practices of a representative sample of 1,056 urban mothers with very young children were studied via the Parent Behavior Checklist (Fox, 1994) and the Behavior Screening Questionnaire (Richman & Graham, 1971). Potential determinants of parenting practices were also addressed, including maternal age, marital status, education level, number of children living at home, and family socioeconomic status. Less positive parenting practices concerning nuturing and discipline were found among mothers who were younger, had more than one child living at home, were single, had a lower income lev

Prospective Within-person Relations among Parental Child-oriented Perfectionism, Child maladaptive Perfectionism, and Child Depressive Symptoms: A Five-wave Study.

While existing research has well documented child perfectionism as a risk factor for depressive symptoms, relatively limited studies have delved into the specific influence of parental child-oriented perfectionism on children's depressive symptoms. This study tracked 2228 Chinese adolescents (baseline Mage = 12.95 ± 0.79 years, 46.3% girls) with five measurements over three years. Using the Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM), results indicated that maternal (not paternal) child-oriented perfectionism had bidirectional links with children's maladaptive perfectionism. Children's

Intergenerational trauma: Parental PTSD and parent-reported child abuse subtypes differentially relate to admission characteristics in the autism inpatient collection.

Autistic youth experience high rates of maltreatment. Little research has considered how distinct abuse dimensions differentially relate to meaningful outcomes, nor taken an intergenerational approach to consider how caregiver trauma and child maltreatment are related. This study sought to identify how parent-reported child abuse subtypes and parent posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) relate to each other and to admission characteristics upon inpatient service entry. Autistic youth (N = 527; 79% White, 21.3% girls, mean age = 12.94 years) participated in the autism inpatient collection. Paren

Therapist verbal behavior early in treatment: relation to successful completion of parent-child interaction therapy.

We examined the role of specific therapist verbal behaviors in predicting successful completion of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) in 22 families, including 11 families that successfully completed treatment and 11 that discontinued treatment prematurely. The children were 3 to 6 years old and diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Chamberlain et al.'s (1986) Therapy Process Code (TPC) was used to measure therapist verbalizations during therapist-parent interactions during the initial clinical interview and the second treatment session. Results indicated that therapists' us

The interplay of parental and child-related characteristics on paediatric COVID-19 vaccine non-acceptance in Hungary.

As the rate of vaccine non-acceptance creates alarming public health challenges, it becomes essential to understand how the interplay between parental and child characteristics influences the uptake of voluntary vaccinations among children. The experiences gained during the COVID-19 pandemic are crucial for developing more targeted communication strategies and increasing vaccination rates in the future. This research analyses data from 13 representative Hungarian surveys focusing on parents' attitudes towards vaccinating their children against COVID-19, giving information of 2482 respondents a

Parenting as a Moderator of the Relation Between Child Inhibited Temperament and Anxiety in Western Contexts: A Systematic Review.

The literature on the role of parenting in the relation between child inhibited temperament and child anxiety is inconsistent, with some literature supporting a moderating role and some literature supporting alternative (e.g., mediating) roles. A systematic review of the evidence that parenting moderates the longitudinal relation between child inhibited temperament and child anxiety is needed. A systematic review of the literature was conducted in February and March of 2022 and repeated in January of 2024. Ten articles met criteria for inclusion, with 39 moderation analyses of interest among t

Are Parents Informed Well Enough About Their Child's Long-term Risks Related to Undescended Testis?

Worldwide, recommendations for timely surgical repair of undescended testis (UDT) are not well translated into clinical practice, potentially due to suboptimal patient/parent education. We evaluated the frequency and content of information provided to affected parents of 310 consecutive cases of UDT undergoing orchidopexy. Parents were enquired regarding details of education provided by the attending clinician. 18% of parents were not provided with detailed information regarding any long-term consequences of untreated UDT. In the 79% who were educated, information about impaired fertility was
