There is limited literature examining the reasons physical medicine and rehabilitation residents take an extended leave of absence during residency and the impact of leave on board examination performance. Such information could better inform leave policies, help guide residency program directors, and potentially destigmatize taking leave. Study objectives were to describe the characteristics of physical medicine and rehabilitation residents who take leave during residency, compare differences in part I (written) and part II (oral) certification examination performance, and determine the preva

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding provides multiple maternal and child benefits, but breastfeeding rates are suboptimal. Parental leave access and use have been associated with higher breastfeeding rates, however, there have been a lack of studies examining fathers' use of parental leave. The objective of this study was to measure the associations between fathers' work leave and infant breastfeeding among a representative sample of fathers from Georgia, United States.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from a novel public health surveillance pilot study, the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monit

BACKGROUND: The "cocooning" strategy was introduced in 2004 to protect infants too young to be vaccinated against pertussis, by immunizing their parents and close relatives. The study objective was to assess its implementation 12 years after its introduction by estimating the pertussis vaccination coverage rates (VCR) among parents of newborns.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pertussis VCR were estimated among all women who gave birth and men who took paternity leave, in 2016 or 2017, from a 1/97th random sample of French claims data. Two distinct study periods were defined based on current recommenda

Despite advancements in gender representation, female anesthesiologists continue to encounter challenges in career advancement that may be further impacted by motherhood. This scoping review examines personal and systemic barriers and facilitators to career advancement for anesthesiologists facing infertility, pregnancy, and childcare. The review identified 22 relevant studies across five themes: the timing of pregnancy and parental leave, breastfeeding and lactation needs, childcare and gender norms, job reentry and career advancement opportunities, and work-life balance and physician well-be

Objective: To evaluate the reproductive experiences of physicians across gender and specialty. Patients and Methods: Between November and December 2021, we surveyed nontrainee physicians of all genders at a single quaternary institution using a modified version of an existing survey instrument. Experiences with family planning, fertility, pregnancy, and parental leave were assessed. Results: There were 422 completed responses. Respondents reported a higher prevalence of infertility as compared to the general U.S. population (26% versus 19%), with no difference in infertility or obstetrical com

INTRODUCTION: Family planning among female physicians is harmed by high risks of infertility, workload burden, poor family leave policies, and gender discrimination. Many women report feeling unsupported in the workplace, despite national policies to protect against unfair treatment.
METHODS: This secondary analysis applied a modified version of the rigorous and accelerated data reduction technique to conduct a thematic analysis of comments to an open-ended prompt. Comments were coded by multiple trained researchers then grouped and merged into illustrative themes via qualitative techniques.

BACKGROUND: Cardiothoracic surgery (CTS) training may coincide with family needs including pregnancy, illness, birth/adoption/fostering of a child, and care for family members. Certifying bodies set requirements and limits on family leave, complicating the navigation of family needs during training. Our goal is to examine policies of medical boards and their alignment with the 2022 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education policy and to develop a practical tool to help trainees and program directors navigate family leave.
METHODS: A literature review was conducted with PubMed of pu

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy during orthopedic surgery practice presents unique challenges related to family planning, workplace accommodations, occupational exposures, board certification requirements, and postpartum return to work. Despite increasing numbers of women entering orthopedic surgery, there remains a lack of centralized guidance addressing pregnancy-related considerations. The purpose of this review is to summarize current evidence, to provide practical recommendations for orthopedic surgeons navigating pregnancy during their career, and to guide practice partners and organizations on

Parents' daily experience of childcare has garnered considerable attention following Kahneman et al.'s (2004) finding that childcare ranked among the least enjoyable daily activities. Subsequent studies have generally found that fathers report more positive valence during childcare compared to mothers. Here, we used experience sampling to examine daily experiences of first-time parents in Denmark between 2022 and 2024, where parental leave policies aim to promote involvement of fathers in infant care. Parents responded to 7 days of prompts during maternity and paternity leave, assessing valenc

Since 2017, the number of women enrolled in medical schools in the United States has increased steadily. For the average female graduate, residency training will coincide with peak childbearing years. Despite increasingly well-defined parental leave policies in other industries, there is no standardized approach across graduate medical education programs. Physician mothers, particularly those in surgical specialties, have also been shown to be at increased risk for major pregnancy complications and postpartum depression. In addition, despite excellent initiation rates, the majority of breastfe

We evaluate changes in elementary school children health outcomes following the introduction of California’s Paid Family Leave (PFL) program, which provided parents with paid time off following the birth of a child. Our health outcomes--overweight, ADHD, and hearing-related problems--are characterized by diagnosis rates that only pick up during early elementary school. Moreover, our health outcomes have been found to be negatively linked with many potential implications of extended maternity leave--increased breastfeeding, prompt medical checkups at infancy, reduced prenatal stress, and reduce

AIM: To investigate early career progression and national insurance use in young adults with paediatric coeliac disease.
METHODS: We performed a register study of a population born in Sweden between 1976 and 1992. Coeliac disease was diagnosed before 15 years of age. The comparison population was matched 4:1 by sex, region of residence at birth and birth year/month. We analysed education, employment, income, job position and national insurance use (sickness benefits, parental leave benefits and social welfare provision) at 25 and 30 years of age.
RESULTS: We identified 1812 individuals with

BACKGROUND: Internationally, supporting surgical trainees during pregnancy, maternity and paternity leave is essential for trainee well-being and for retention of high-calibre surgeons, regardless of their parental status. This study sought to determine the current experience of surgical trainees regarding pregnancy, maternity and paternity leave.
METHODS: A cross-sectional anonymised electronic voluntary survey of all surgical trainees working in the UK and Ireland was distributed via the Association of Surgeons in Training and the British Orthopaedic Trainees' Association.
RESULTS: There w

Paediatric abusive head trauma (AHT) is a leading cause of fatal child maltreatment among young children. Current prevention efforts have not been consistently effective. Policies such as paid parental leave could potentially prevent AHT, given its impacts on risk factors for child maltreatment. To explore associations between California's 2004 paid family leave (PFL) policy and hospital admissions for AHT, we used difference-in-difference analyses of 1995-2011 US state-level data before and after the policy in California and seven comparison states. Compared with seven states with no PFL poli

Paid parental benefits, with individually earmarked time for mothers and fathers, aim to promote gender equality in labor force participation, wages, and childcare. The Canadian province of Québec expanded parental benefits over and above the federal policy in 2006 with the Québec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP), which introduced paid paternity leave and lower eligibility criteria as its key features. This policy aimed to increase gender equality by encouraging fathers to use parental benefits and expanding coverage to low-income parents. Using Canadian administrative data and exploiting the po

INTRODUCTION: Low-income and-middle-income countries (LMICs) contribute to the maximum burden of stillbirth globally, which affects parents in various tangible and intangible ways, emphasising the need for having a provision of parental leave to recover from the physical and mental/emotional drain. In response to this, we conducted a scoping review with the objective of identifying provision of leave within maternity benefit policies after stillbirth in LMICs.
METHODOLOGY: The study is conducted in accordance with Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines, using the population, concept and context f
