Parenting infants conceived by gamete donation.

In recent years, concerns have been raised regarding the potentially negative consequences of gamete donation for parent-child relationships. Findings are presented of a study of families with an infant conceived by gamete donation. Fifty donor insemination families and 51 egg donation families were compared with 80 natural conception families on standardized interview and questionnaire measures of the psychological well-being of the parents, the quality of parent-child relationships, and infant temperament. The differences that were identified indicated more positive parent-child relationship

Parenting on a digital leash: time pressure, parenting guilt, and emotional exhaustion in Chinese dual-earner families.

BACKGROUND: Digital tools are increasingly integrated into parenting, but their psychological costs remain unclear. This study investigates whether digitally-mediated parenting intensity predicts emotional exhaustion among Chinese dual-earner parents, and whether time pressure and parenting guilt mediate this relationship. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 713 dual-earner parents from 45 communities across 13 cities in Jiangsu Province, China. Participants completed measures of digital parenting intensity, time pressure, parenting guilt, and emotional exhaustion. We tested

Fathers' postnatal distress, parenting self-efficacy, later parenting behavior, and children's emotional-behavioral functioning: A longitudinal study.

Fathers' postnatal distress has been associated with subsequent emotional and behavioral problems for children; however, the mechanisms by which this occurs have received less attention. One potential pathway could be via the negative effects that father mental health problems and parenting self-efficacy (PSE) in the postnatal period have on later parenting behaviors. Using a nationally representative cohort of Australian father-child dyads (N = 3,741), the long-term relationships between fathers' psychological distress and PSE in the postnatal period, parenting behavior when children were age

Actor-Partner Model of Parenting and Co-Parenting Practices and Youth Resilience During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The present research examined parents' perspectives of co-parenting and supportive and hostile parenting as predictors of youth resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were 47 mother/father dyads who had at least one K-12 child (Mage = 11.40, SD = 3.92). Mothers and fathers each completed an online survey that measured parenting, co-parenting, and youth resilience during the pandemic. Data were analyzed using the actor-partner interdependence model. Results revealed a positive relationship between mother supportiveness and perceived youth resilience; in contrast, increased father

Positive parenting for positive parents: HIV/AIDS, poverty, caregiver depression, child behavior, and parenting in South Africa.

Families affected by HIV/AIDS in the developing world experience higher risks of psychosocial problems than nonaffected families. Positive parenting behavior may buffer against the negative impact of child AIDS-orphanhood and caregiver AIDS-sickness on child well-being. Although there is substantial literature regarding the predictors of parenting behavior in Western populations, there is insufficient evidence on HIV/AIDS as a risk factor for poor parenting in low- and middle-income countries. This paper examines the relationship between HIV/AIDS and positive parenting by comparing HIV/AIDS-af

Associations Between Parenting Stress, Parenting Behaviours and Language Abilities in Autistic Preschoolers: A Study with Mothers and Fathers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Research shows that language abilities in autism are highly heterogeneous and that parents play a crucial role in children's development. However, the bidirectional relationships between parenting stress, parenting behaviours and children's language abilities in autism remain under-researched. Furthermore, fathers are often excluded from autism parenting research. This study therefore aimed (1) to compare mothers and fathers with respect to the levels of self-reported parenting stress and behaviours and (2) to examine associations between parenting stress, parenting behavi

Mothers' parenting stress and depression during infancy predicts parenting self-efficacy and media emotion regulation two years later.

PURPOSE: The transition to motherhood is characterized by increased stress and changes in coping behaviors, yet limited research has examined how different dimensions of parenting stress relate to maternal functioning and media use over time. Guided by the ABC-X model of family stress, this study examined longitudinal associations between parenting stress, maternal depressive symptoms, parenting self-efficacy (PSE), and media coping behaviors. METHODS: Longitudinal data were collected from 439 mothers across three yearly waves. Parenting stress was measured at Time 1, maternal depression at T

Strengthening Parenting Among Refugees in Europe (SPARE): Feasibility of an Adapted Parenting Intervention for Ukrainian Refugees in Iceland.

In recent years, the flow of refugees has grown considerably due to increasing upheaval worldwide. Host countries can help mitigate adjustment problems for refugee families by offering evidence-based support programs. The Strengthening Parenting Among Refugees in Europe (SPARE) program builds on and adapts the intervention Generation Parent Management Training-Oregon Model (GenerationPMTO). SPARE supports parents in their parenting role and helps them adapt to a new cultural environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility, acceptability, and impact of the intervention on

Parenting in Times of War: A Meta-Analysis and Qualitative Synthesis of War Exposure, Parenting, and Child Adjustment.

This mixed methods systematic review and meta-analysis sheds more light on the role parenting practices play in children's adjustment after war exposure. Specifically, we quantitatively examined whether parenting behavior explained some of the well-known associations between war exposure and children's adjustment. In addition, we meta-synthesized qualitative evidence answering when and why parenting practices might change for war-affected families. We searched nine electronic databases and contacted experts in the field for relevant studies published until March 2018, identifying 4,147 unique

The role of general parenting and cannabis-specific parenting practices in adolescent cannabis and other illicit drug use.

AIMS: To investigate general and cannabis-specific parenting practices in relation to adolescent cannabis and other illicit drug use. METHODS: Data were derived from the Dutch National School Survey on Substance Use among students (N=3209; aged 12-16 years) and one of their parents in 2011. RESULTS: Logistic regression analyses revealed that 1) parental cannabis use was significantly related to more adolescent lifetime and recent cannabis use, and 2) restrictive cannabis-specific parental rules were associated with less adolescent recent cannabis and lifetime use of other illicit drugs, even

Mechanisms of Change in a Self-Help Parenting Program for Child Behavioral Difficulties: the Role of Unsupportive Parenting.

Self-help parenting programs that are aimed at reducing child behavioral difficulties may be effective and accessible alternatives to face-to-face parenting programs. Insight into the mechanisms of change for such programs is important to enhance their effectiveness. The goal of this study was to examine whether changes in supportive and unsupportive parenting (measured by the Parenting Practices Interview; PPI) and parenting sense of competence (measured by the Parenting Sense of Competence scale; PSOC) mediated the effects of a self-help parenting program on child behavioral difficulties. A

Highly Involved Parenting of Adolescents With ADHD: Examination of the Psychometric Properties of a Measure of "Helicopter Parenting".

OBJECTIVE: The concept of the "helicopter parent" was popularized in the 2000s and 2010s by Western culture, and it has recently begun to be examined by researchers to describe parental over-involvement and intrusive behavior that impedes transition into adulthood. Research has yet to investigate the viability of this construct for adolescents when parenting is needed to facilitate the development of autonomy. The present study examined the psychometric structure of a modified "helicopter parenting" measure adapted for use in a sample with increased likelihood of highly involved parenting: ado

Parenting and Centrality: The Role of Life Meaning as a Mediator for Parenting and Language Broker Role Identity.

Language brokering is a prevalent phenomenon in ethnic minority immigrant populations. Although accruing evidence points to the beneficial impacts of healthy role identity development, research investigating the formation of a language broker role identity in language brokering adolescents is lacking in the literature. In a sample of 604 Latinx adolescents (54.3% female; Mage at Time 1 = 12.41, SD = .97), structured equation modeling was conducted with maternal warmth and hostility examined as antecedents and adolescents' life meaning as a mediator for language broker role identities. Parenting work and autism trajectories of care.

This study investigates the work and care associated with raising a child with disabilities in the United States. Based on in-depth interviews with parents who have a child with autism, it develops the notion of parenting work and trajectories of care to investigate how parents navigate and coordinate the challenges of getting an autism diagnosis, obtaining educational services, and re-contextualising the possibilities for the future. I argue that parents embody a complex mix of love, hope, and responsibility in parenting work and trajectories of care that expands temporal and social elements

[New parenting education in maternal child nursing].

Taiwan society is today typified by low birth rates amongst Taiwanese and a rising number of children born to immigrant and trans-cultural marriage families. Unhealthy behavior and anxiety on the part of pregnant women increase postpartum depression and complications and negatively affect neonatal heath. Such may further negatively impact upon romantic feelings between the new parents and the nascent parent-child relationship. New parenting education is a proactive and innovative strategy that may be used to improve maternal and child health. Therefore, it is worthy to explore how best to achi

'New parenting', psychotherapy, prenatal and perinatal care.

The health of future generations, both physical and psychological, depends upon good parental and early environment, free particularly from malnutrition, toxins and undue stress. Education about these negative influences is urgent, especially to encourage childbearing women in a healthy diet and lifestyle. The detrimental effects of cigarette smoking in pregnancy have been known since the 1970s, yet in Germany, for example, 60% of all children are conceived, carried, born into a household where at least one adult smokes. Even if the father desists from smoking at home, the nicotine in his body

The determinants of parenting: a process model.

This essay is based on the assumption that a long-neglected topic of socialization, the determinants of individual differences in parental functioning, is illuminated by research on the etiology of child maltreatment. Three domains of determinants are identified (personal psychological resources of parents, characteristics of the child, and contextual sources of stress and support), and a process model of competent parental functioning is offered on the basis of the analysis. The model presumes that parental functioning is multiply determined, that sources of contextual stress and support can

Pathological Personality Traits Predict Early Parenting Behavior.

Personality pathology (PP) is a risk factor for poor parenting. However, little is known about how dimensions of PP differentially relate to parenting behaviors. To address this gap, we examined associations between dimensions of pathological personality traits in (N = 302) pregnant women, oversampled for intimate partner violence, and their observed parenting behavior at 6 months postpartum. First, we validated a six-factor structure of PP trait dimensions consisting of negative affectivity, detachment, disinhibition, antagonism, psychoticism, and anankastia. Second, we examined associations

Parenting stress and FASD: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that may arise following prenatal exposure to alcohol. Children with FASD tend to experience a diverse set of physical, social, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms. Caregivers of these children likely experience elevated levels of parenting stress; however, research in this area is still in its infancy. AIM: The present study sought to more fully understand the current state of the literature on parenting stress experienced by caregivers of children with FASD. METHOD: Databases including PsycInfo, Scop
