Detection of Chlamydia psittaci in pet parrots sold in Xining, China.

Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci) is a zoonotic pathogen, causing a systemic wasting disease in avian as well as lung infections in humans. To evaluate the risks of psittacosis posed through pet birds, 182 fecal samples were collected from commercially popular parrot species, including budgerigars (n = 87), cockatiels (n = 28), and lovebirds (n = 67), in Xining City, northwestern China. Through molecular methods, results revealed that an overall C. psittaci prevalence of 14.3 % (26/182), while species-specific infection rates of 21.8 % (19/87) in budgerigars, 10.7 % (3/28) in cockatiels, and 6.

Zoonotic relevance of multidrug-resistant bacteria in parrots with respiratory illness.

Nowadays, research attention is paid to the investigation of bacterial pathogens in the cloaca of parrots rather than the nasal niche, which is largely ignored. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the nasal carriage of multidrug-resistant bacteria with zoonotic potential in parrots suffering from respiratory illness. Nasal swabs were collected from 75 sick parrots with respiratory illness, and they were subjected to microbiological isolation and identification, followed by antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Staphylococcu

Congestive heart failure in 6 African grey parrots (Psittacus e erithacus).

Six African grey parrots (Psittacus e erithacus) were diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure based on gross and microscopic findings. Ages ranged from 15 days to 8 years, and 5 of 6 parrots were either neonates or juveniles at the time of diagnosis. Two neonates and 2 juveniles came from the same breeding aviary; the 2 juveniles were born to the same breeding pair. The 2 other parrots were kept as pets. Clinical signs included distention of the coelomic cavity (4 of 6), rales (3 of 6), weakness (4 of 6), bradyarrhythmia (1 of 6), growth retardation (1 of 6), crop stasis (1

Evidence of Chlamydophila psittaci infection in captive Amazon parrots in Brazil.

The prevalence of Chlamydophila psittaci (formerly Chlamydia psittaci) infection was assessed in 95 apparently healthy, captive Amazon parrots from three breeder collections in southeastern and west-central Brazil. Cloacal swabs from 95 birds were tested for chlamydial antigen, which was detected by direct immunofluorescence (DIF), and serum samples from 44 of these birds were tested for antibodies to C. psittaci using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The prevalences of active infection as detected by DIF were 16.7%, 22.2%, and 56.1%, and seroprevalences were 100%, 87.5%, and 60% in flock

Surveillance of Parrot Bornavirus in Taiwan Captive Psittaciformes.

Parrot bornavirus (PaBV) is an infectious disease linked with proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) with severe digestive and neurological symptoms affecting psittacine birds. Despite its detection in 2008, PaBV prevalence in Taiwan remains unexplored. Taiwan is one of the leading psittacine bird breeders; hence, understanding the distribution of PaBV aids preventive measures in controlling spread, early disease recognition, epidemiology, and transmission dynamics. Here, we aimed to detect the prevalence rate of PaBV and assess its genetic variation in Taiwan. Among 124 psittacine birds test

Pseudoparalysis of parrot - Re-emergence of the great mimicker.

We present the case of a 2-month-old adopted female seeking evaluation in the pediatric emergency department due to a one-day history of decreased right arm movement and fussiness. The physical exam was largely unremarkable with the exception of decreased spontaneous movement of the right upper extremity, obvious discomfort with passive movement and subtle edema of the forearm. Because of concern for non-accidental trauma, plain films were obtained which revealed no signs of traumatic injury. Subsequently, a broader investigation ensued with infectious etiologies in mind. Laboratory evaluation

Prevention of the parrot beak deformity in fingertip injuries.

The nail is supported by the dorsal tuft of the terminal phalanx. Following distal fingertip trauma, varying amounts of nail support may be lost resulting in the nail curving palmarwards. This curvature is dependent upon the degree of bony loss, the amount of remaining nail bed and the degree of scar contracture at the hyponychial-pulp interface. The parrot beak or hooked nail deformity is most commonly caused by tight closure of a fingertip amputation and excessive palmar tension at the hyponychial-pulp suture line. A simple technique using a hypodermic needle, that eliminates tension from th

A new treatment for parrot beak deformity of the toe.

Two cases of congenital parrot beak deformity of the toe were treated by pushing back the nail plate, nailbed, matrix, and proximal skin fold in one piece as a flap. The proximal skin portion of this flap was deepithelialized to facilitate this shift, and thus no dog-ear deformity was produced. The distal skin defect of the pulp was covered by a palmar advancement flap. This method does not require augmentation of the fingertip or toetip and is very useful for correcting parrot beak deformities of the toes.

Additional records of Neopsittaconirmus lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Ischnocera) parasitizing captive parrots.

Species of the chewing louse genus Neopsittaconirmus Conci, 1942 are host-specific parasites on Old World and Australasian parrots (Psittaciformes), infesting both wild and captive birds. Despite veterinarian practices that attempt to eliminate parasites from captive hosts, two species, Neopsittaconirmus gracilis Guimarães, 1974 and Neopsittaconirmus vendulae Sychra, 2006, frequently infest captive birds, not only their regular natural hosts, but also other species that are not naturally parasitized. Here we report and discuss additional records of these two species of lice from captive parrot

Imaging features of disseminated xanthogranulomatous inflammation in eclectus parrots (Eclectus roratus).

Xanthogranulomatous disease is a rare condition, which can be caused by infection, inflammation, hemorrhage, immunologic disease, or inherited lysosomal disorders. It is characterized by non-intracellular lipid and cholesterol deposits among an inflammatory infiltrate of vacuolated macrophages and giant cells. The diagnosis of xanthogranulomatous disease is challenging, with nonspecific imaging findings often misinterpreted as aggressive neoplastic processes in humans. In this retrospective case series study, we describe the diagnostic imaging characteristics of a disseminated xanthogranulomat

First report of Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence in pet parrots in China.

Toxoplasmosis, caused by the obligate intracellular protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii, has become a serious public health problem worldwide. T. gondii can infect almost all warm-blooded animals, including parrots. However, little is known of T. gondii infection in parrots in China. Antibodies against T. gondii in 311 parrots including 202 Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus), 26 Lovebirds (Agapornis sp.), 22 Cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus), and 61 Alexandrine Parakeets (Psittacula eupatria) in the cities of Beijing and Weifang in north China were tested using the modified agglutination

Cryptosporidia in the cloacal coprodeum of red-lored parrots (Amazona autumnalis).

Cryptosporidiosis was diagnosed in the cloacal coprodeum of two red-lored parrots (Amazona autumnalis). The parasites were adhered to the microvillus border of epithelial cells and their presence was associated with loss and atrophy of microvilli. Merozoites, trophozoites, gametes, and oocytes were identified with light and transmission electron microscopy. The coprodeal epithelium was hyperplastic and the lamina propria was infiltrated with moderate numbers of heterophils and lymphocytes.

Disseminated coelomic xanthogranulomatosis in eclectus parrots (Eclectus roratus) and budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus).

Xanthogranulomatosis is an inflammatory lesion characterized by lipid-containing macrophages, extracellular lipid, hemorrhage, and necrosis. We describe disseminated intracoelomic xanthogranulomatosis in 5 eclectus parrots (Eclectus roratus) and 2 budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). Postmortem, clinicopathologic, and historical case material was reviewed. Ages ranged from 3 to 24 years; there were 5 males and 2 females. Table food was included in the diet of 3/5 cases, and animal products were included in 2/3 cases. Common clinicopathologic abnormalities included leukocytosis (4/5 cases) an

Stereotypies in caged parrots, schizophrenia and autism: evidence for a common mechanism.

Spontaneously occurring abnormal behaviors in animals have recently received considerable attention, both in veterinary medicine and as a potential model for abnormal behavior in several human mental disorders. Stereotypies are abnormal repetitive, unvarying, and functionless behaviors that are often performed by captive and domesticated animals housed in barren environments. They closely resemble the stereotypies of autistic and mentally retarded patients, stereotypies of unmedicated chronic schizophrenic patients, certain classes of simple tic in Tourette's syndrome, and several drug-induced

Mutations in SLC45A2 lead to loss of melanin in parrot feathers.

Bird plumage coloration is a complex and multifactorial process that involves both genetic and environmental factors. Diverse pigment groups contribute to plumage variation in different birds. In parrots, the predominant green color results from the combination of 2 different primary colors: yellow and blue. Psittacofulvin, a pigment uniquely found in parrots, is responsible for the yellow coloration, while blue is suggested to be the result of light scattering by feather nanostructures and melanin granules. So far, genetic control of melanin-mediated blue coloration has been elusive. In this

Polyglucosan storage disease in a black-capped parrot (Pionitesmelanocephalus).

Following an episode of sudden lethargy, an 18-month-old female black-capped parrot (Pionites melanocephalus) died while being examined. On gross examination, there was fluid within the coelom, hepatomegaly with yellow colouration and the heart appeared enlarged with pallor throughout the myocardium. On histological examination, cardiomyocytes were swollen with loss of cross striations and contained 6-12-μm diameter intrasarcoplasmic pale grey inclusions of storage material. Cardiomyocytes were occasionally karyomegalic with mitotic figures, lost or replaced by fibrosis and inflammation. Withi
