Intratracheal instillation of respirable particulate matter elicits neuroendocrine activation.

OBJECTIVE: Inhalation of ozone activates central sympathetic-adrenal-medullary and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal stress axes. While airway neural networks are known to communicate noxious stimuli to higher brain centers, it is not known to what extent responses generated from pulmonary airways contribute to neuroendocrine activation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Unlike inhalational exposures that involve the entire respiratory tract, we employed intratracheal (IT) instillations to expose only pulmonary airways to either soluble metal-rich residual oil fly ash (ROFA) or compressor-generated diesel

Chemical characterisation of particulate matter in urban transport modes.

Traffic is a main source of air pollutants in urban areas and consequently daily peak exposures tend to occur during commuting. Personal exposure to particulate matter (PM) was monitored while cycling and travelling by bus, car and metro along an assigned route in Lisbon (Portugal), focusing on PM2.5 and PM10 (PM with aerodynamic diameter <2.5 and 10 µm, respectively) mass concentrations and their chemical composition. In vehicles, the indoor-outdoor interplay was also evaluated. The PM2.5 mean concentrations were 28 ± 5, 31 ± 9, 34 ± 9 and 38 ± 21 µg/m3 for bus, bicycle, car and metro modes,

AMPK activation ameliorates fine particulate matter-induced hepatic injury.

Both the epidemiological and animal experimental studies have reported the association between PM2.5 and respiratory, cardiovascular, and metabolic diseases. However, the study linking PM2.5 and hepatic injury is few, and the relative mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Thirty-two 6-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were exposed to filtered air (FA) or concentrated PM2.5 for 12 weeks using Shanghai Meteorological and Environmental Animal Exposure System ("Shanghai-METAS"), respectively. At week 11, the mice began to be treated with intraperitoneal injection of normal 0.9% saline or AMPK activato

SIRT1 protects against urban particulate matter-induced airway inflammation.

PURPOSE: Particulate matter (PM) has been implicated as a risk factor for airway injury. However, the molecular mechanisms remain largely unclear. The goal of this study was to determine whether sirtuin1 (SIRT1), an anti-inflammatory and antiaging protein, protects against PM-induced airway inflammation. METHODS: The effect of SIRT1 on PM-induced airway inflammation was assessed by using in vivo models of airway inflammation induced by PM and in vitro culture of human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells exposed to PM, resveratrol (SIRT1 activator), or both. RESULTS: PM-stimulated HBE cells show

Particulate matter within the membranous labyrinth: pathologic or normal?

Recent reports have suggested that particulate matter identified within the membranous portion of the posterior semicircular canal is responsible for the development of positional vertigo. To further investigate this claim, a posterior canal fenestration was carried out in ten patients undergoing acoustic tumor removal via a translabyrinthine approach. Particles were identified in the membranous labyrinth in nine patients. One of these patients described positional vertigo preoperatively. Electron microscopy demonstrated particles within the membranous labyrinth that appeared to be of mixed pr

Associations of fine particulate matter with incident cardiovascular disease; comparing models using ZIP code-level and individual-level fine particulate matter and confounders.

BACKGROUND: PM2.5 has been positively associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence. Most evidence has come from cohorts and administrative databases. Cohorts typically have extensive information on potential confounders and residential-level exposures. Administrative databases are usually more representative but typically lack information on potential confounders and often only have exposures at coarser geographies (e.g., ZIP code). The weaknesses in both types of studies have been criticized for potentially jeopardizing the validity of their findings for regulatory purposes. METHOD

Nanostructured Bioaerogels as a Potential Solution for Particulate Matter Pollution.

Particulate matter (PM) pollution is a significant environmental and public health issue globally. Exposure to high levels of PM, especially fine particles, can have severe health consequences. These particles can come from a variety of sources, including natural events like dust storms and wildfires, as well as human activities such as industrial processes and transportation. Although an extensive development in air filtration techniques has been made in the past few years, fine particulate matter still poses a serios and dangerous threat to human health and to our environment. Photochemical Aging of Atmospheric Particulate Matter in the Aqueous Phase.

This study focused on the photoaging of atmospheric particulate matter smaller than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) in the aqueous phase. PM2.5 was collected during a winter, a spring, and a summer campaign in urban and rural settings in Colorado and extracted into water. The aqueous extracts were photoirradiated using simulated sunlight, and the production rate (r•OH) and the effects of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were measured as well as the optical properties as a function of the photoaging of the extracts. r•OH was seen to have a strong seasonality with low mean values for the winter and spring extracts (4.8 a

Comparison of the in vitro toxicological activity of various particulate matter.

Ultrafine particles (UFPs, < 2.5 µm) in air pollutants have been identified as a major cause of respiratory diseases, since they can affect the lung alveoli through the bronchus. In particular, if toxicants such as heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are present in UFPs, they can cause diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung cancer. This study compared in vitro toxicity of various particulate matter including UFPs from combustion particles of diesel (diesel exhaust particles (DEP)), rice straw (RS), pine stem (PS) and coal (CC), and road du

The effect of particulate matter on resistance and conductance vessels in the rat.

Epidemiological and clinical studies suggest that air pollution, in particular ambient particulate matter (PM), increases mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Several in vivo studies have shown an increase of blood pressure by PM, but so far the mechanism or responsible particle-component has not been elucidated. We exposed small mesenteric rat artery (SMRA) and rat aorta to ambient particles (EHC-93) to test the ability of ambient particles to modify the vascular tone of different vessel types. Impacts of atmospheric particulate matter deposition on phytoplankton: A review.

In many rapidly urbanizing and industrializing countries, atmospheric pollution causes severe environmental problems and compromises the health of humans and ecosystems. Atmospheric emissions, which encompass gases and particulate matter, can be transported back to the earth's surface through atmospheric deposition. Atmospheric deposition supplies chemical species that can serve as nutrients and/or toxins to aquatic ecosystems, resulting in wide-ranging responses of aquatic organisms. Among the aquatic organisms, phytoplankton is the basis of the aquatic food web and is a key player in global

Particulate Matter Exposure of Passengers at Bus Stations: A Review.

This review clarifies particulate matter (PM) pollution, including its levels, the factors affecting its distribution, and its health effects on passengers waiting at bus stations. The usual factors affecting the characteristics and composition of PM include industrial emissions and meteorological factors (temperature, humidity, wind speed, rain volume) as well as bus-station-related factors such as fuel combustion in vehicles, wear of vehicle components, cigarette smoking, and vehicle flow. Several studies have proven that bus stops can accumulate high PM levels, thereby elevating passengers'

Morphological and chemical composition of particulate matter in buses exhaust.

This research article investigates the particulate matter originated from the exhaust emissions of 20 bus models, within the territory of Vladivostok, Russian Federation. The majority of evaluated buses (17 out of 20) had emissions of large particles with sizes greater than 400 μm, which account for more than 80% of all measured particles. The analysis of the elemental composition showed that the exhaust emissions contained Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mg, Ni, Pb, and Zn, with the concentration of Zn prevailing in all samples by two to three orders of magnitude higher than the concentrations of the other e

The mechanisms of air pollution and particulate matter in cardiovascular diseases.

Clinical and epidemiological studies demonstrate that short- and long-term exposure to air pollution increases mortality due to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Given the increased industrialization and the increased sources of pollutants (i.e., cars exhaust emissions, cigarette smoke, industry emissions, burning of fossil fuels, incineration of garbage), air pollution has become a key public health issue to solve. Among pollutants, the particulate matter (PM) is a mixture of solid and liquid particles which differently affects human health depending on their size (i.e., PM10 with a di

Relationship of particulate matter and ozone with 3-nitrotyrosine in the atmosphere.

The prevalence of allergic diseases has increased in the past few decades. Bio-aerosol proteins and their chemical modifications, such as 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT), in the atmosphere have been attracting attention due to their promotive effects on allergies. 3-NT is generated from the amino acid, tyrosine, through a reaction with ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). However, the underlying mechanisms have not yet been elucidated in detail. Therefore, we measured 3-NT and evaluated the relationships among 3-NT and various pollutants such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), NOx (NO + NO2), ozone (O3), PM7,

Deposition measurement of particulate matter in connection with corrosion studies.

A new passive particle collector (inert surrogate surface) that collects particles from all directions has been developed. It was used to measure particle deposition at 35 test sites as part of a project that examined corrosion of materials in order that variation in particulate material could be used in development of dose-response functions in a modern multi-pollutant environment. The project, MULTI-ASSESS, was funded by the EU to examine the effects of air pollution on cultural heritage. Passive samplers were mounted rain-protected, and both in wind-protected and wind-exposed positions, to

Air Pollution and Particulate Matter: Implications in Upper Airway Disease.

Air pollution has long been recognized as a threat to human health. There is growing evidence that exposure to air pollution increases the risk of upper airway inflammatory disease including allergic and non-allergic rhinitis, and chronic rhinosinusitis. Recent improvement in air pollution measurement, including wearable pollution monitors, may improve our understanding of patient exposures. In this piece, we summarize salient literature and interventions.
