Dairy cows may suffer events of hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia, commonly known as milk fever and tetany. Milk fever is characterized by hypocalcemia at parturition as a consequence of a sudden increase in Ca demand and an unavoidable delay in Ca metabolism adaptation. Tetany is due to impaired Mg absorption from the rumen that cannot be compensated by absorptive or excretory adaptation, resulting in a net nutritional shortage of Mg and culminating in hypomagnesemia. Prevention strategies require triggering the activation of Ca gastrointestinal absorption and avoiding factors limiting ruminal

Metabolic disorders are disturbances to one or more of the metabolic processes in dairy cattle. Dysfunction of any of these processes is associated with the manifestation of metabolic diseases or disorders. In this review, data recording, incidences, genetic parameters, predictors, and status of genetic evaluations were examined for (1) ketosis, (2) displaced abomasum, (3) milk fever, and (4) tetany, as these are the most prevalent metabolic diseases where published genetic parameters are available. The reported incidences of clinical cases of metabolic disorders are generally low (less than 1

In one study, 6 cows with high erythrocyte potassium concentrations (HK cows) and 7 with low erythrocyte potassium concentrations (LK cows) were infused with 4.7% Na2EDTA solution intravenously for 4 h. The immediately observable clinical signs and the sequelae over a period of weeks were recorded and compared. There were no differences in the clinical responses of HK or LK cows to the infusion of Na2EDTA. In a second study, these clinical signs plus those produced experimentally by three other research groups were compared with both the clinical signs of milk fever recorded in three text book

Milk fever (MF) is a metabolic disease in dairy cows around parturition. The clinical lead sign is muscular paresis leading in severe cases to paralysis of the affected animal. Multiparturient animals of high performing dairy breeds are most likely to be affected and have a high probability of recurrence. An acute drop in blood calcium levels causes the disease when the demand for calcium at the onset of lactation exceeds the ability to replete blood calcium levels through mobilization from bone and intestinal uptake. With the understanding of the underlying mechanism, calcium supply managemen

The hypocalcemia associated with the clinical disease known as milk fever is due to a failure of the calcium homeostatic mechanisms in the cow to restore normal blood calcium concentration in a timely manner at the onset of lactation. The defect in calcium homeostasis appears to reside in the sensitivity of bone and kidney tissues to parathyroid hormone (PTH) stimulation. Evidence suggests the acid-base status of the cow dictates the sensitivity of the tissues to PTH stimulation, and that metabolic alkalosis is responsible for blunting tissue PTH responsiveness. Hypomagnesemia can also reduce

We report the management of a parturient with undiagnosed hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HOKPP) who underwent epidural analgesia for labor, complicated by an unintentional dural puncture, and the eventual use of epidural anesthesia for cesarean delivery. Following discharge, she represented with lower extremity paresis. After being evaluated for a compressive neuraxial lesion, she made a full recovery following potassium repletion. The obstetric anesthetic implications for patients with HOKPP and how this disorder impacts the evaluation of acute motor weakness in the immediate postpartum peri

BACKGROUND: High concentrations of NEFA relative to a defined reference or 'cut-point' values before calving can predict the risk of specific or collective periparturient disease events.
OBJECTIVES: A field-based cohort study was conducted to evaluate the value and critical points of serum nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) at the precalving time to predict the occurrence of postpartum diseases and reproductive performance in dairy cows.
METHODS: Blood samples were taken from 521 high-yielding dairy cows at 1 week (±3 days) before calving and NEFA levels were measured. Health and reproduction

This study evaluated and compared infrared thermography (IRT) and rectal temperature (RT) as screening tests to identify sick transition dairy cows. Holstein cows (n = 72; 42 primiparous) had RT and IRT temperatures taken daily from 1 to 12 days in milk (DIM). Health examinations were performed daily to diagnose retained fetal membrane, milk fever and metritis, and blood was analyzed for β-hydroxybutyrate at 6 and 9 DIM to diagnose ketosis. Plasma concentrations of cortisol, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor α and serum amyloid A at 3, 6, 9 and 12 DIM were included as additional indicators

The objective of this study was to estimate heritability and genetic correlations between the liabilities of clinical mastitis (CM), milk fever (MF), metritis (MET), and retained placenta (RP) within the first three lactations of Holstein dairy cows. The records of 57,301 dairy cows from 20 large dairy herds in Iran between January 2005 and June 2009 were analysed with univariate and bivariate threshold animal models, using Gibbs sampling methodology. The final model included the fixed class effects of herd-year, season of calving, parity of dam, the linear covariate effect of age at calving,

Mineral disorders in dairy cattle typically occur soon after calving and are often specifically related to nutritional management during the late dry period. The incidence of hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and hypomagnesemia can be minimized by proper diet formulation and good overall nutritional management in the dry period. The addition of anions to the diet during the late dry period may be of particular benefit for preventing hypocalcemia; however, supplementation with anions will reduce dry matter intake if feeding management is not excellent.

Data recorded in a herd health management system were obtained from 32 registered Holstein dairy herds from British Columbia. Frequencies of disease were described, and the effect of herd, age, year, season, and the interrelationships between diseases within a lactation on the occurrence of disease were evaluated. Lactational incidence rates were computed for diseases with a short period of risk (ie, udder edema, milk fever, retained placenta, metritis, displaced abomasum, and ketosis), whereas for diseases with a longer period of risk (ie, cystic ovaries, mastitis and stable footrot), inciden

The effects of stage of lactation and breed on total and ionized calcium in blood plasma were determined for eight Holstein and eight Jersey cows fed a diet containing .25% Ca during the dry period and fed a diet with .50% Ca after calving. Blood samples were obtained by jugular venipuncture at 2-wk intervals from 4 wk before calving through wk 10 of lactation. Total and ionized Ca contents of fresh plasma were determined potentiometrically with an ion-specific electrode. Total Ca in plasma also was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Average concentrations determined by atomic

A prospective and randomized study was conducted on 50 full term parturients undergoing labour analgesia at Panna Dai Hospital, R.N.T. Medical College, Udaipur. The parturients were allocated in two groups: group BF (n = 25) received an epidural injection of bupivacaine (0.15%; 15 mg) + Fentanyl (0.0002%); 2 microg/ml); group BEF (n = 25) bupivacaine (0.15%; 15 mg) + Fentanyl (0.0002%; 2microg/ml) + Epinephrine (1.7 microg/ml; 1:600,000). Subsequent top up (same as bolus) was administered at VAS > or = 3. Comparison between the two groups showed no significant difference in onset of analgesia,

Milk fever is a metabolic disorder that predominantly affects dairy animals during the periparturient period and within four weeks of calving. Milk fever is primarily attributed to a decrease in the animal's serum Ca2+ levels. Clinical milk fever occurs when Ca2+ concentration drops below 1.5 mM (6 mg/dL). Without prompt intervention, clinical milk fever leads to noticeable physical symptoms and health complications including coma and fatality. Subclinical milk fever is characterized by Ca2+ levels between 1.5 and 2.12 mM (6-8.48 mg/dL). Approximately 50% of multiparous dairy cows suffer from

Data of 22,691 observations on parturition related problems (dystocia, calf mortality, milk fever, retained placenta, and mastitis) were collected from 27 cooperating California dairy herds. Age at first calving did not affect calving difficulty; thus, an optimal age for first calving was not identified. Decisions on breeding virgin heifers should be based on size of cow because of the effect of size of cow on difficulty at first parity. Small calves experienced greatest mortality at parities greater than one; however, large calves had greater mortality at first parity. Greater mortality for l

OBJECTIVE: Sulfur deficiency and toxicity in livestock is associated with decreased performance and diseases. However, little is known about the diagnostics of sulfur status in dairy herds. The objectives of this study were to describe sulfur concentrations in feed rations in German dairy herds, to assess associations between feed sulfur concentrations and health and milk yield, to determine suitable laboratory diagnostic methods of sulfur status, and to propose reference values for the assessment of sulfur status in different sample media.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2006 and 2014, a tota

Logistic regression was used to investigate the effects of host characteristics, production, and 23 veterinary diagnoses on the risks of two reticuloruminal disorders, ruminal acidosis and traumatic reticuloperitonitis among 61,124 Finnish Ayrshire cows. Lactational incidence risks were .3% for ruminal acidosis and .6% for traumatic reticuloperitonitis. The relative risk of ruminal acidosis was not related to parity, whereas the risk of traumatic reticuloperitonitis decreased with increasing parity. The risk of traumatic reticuloperitonitis was not related to milk yield of individual affected
