Human Bocavirus Infection Markers in Peripheral Blood and Stool Samples of Children with Acute Gastroenteritis.

Human bocaviruses (HBoVs) 1⁻4 belong to the Parvoviridae family, and they infect the respiratory or gastrointestinal tracts in children. We investigated the prevalence of HBoV1⁻4 DNAs in the blood and stool samples, and of HBoV1⁻4 IgG and IgM in the plasma samples, of children presenting with acute gastroenteritis (AGE). In addition, we identified HBoV co-infections with the five most frequent gastrointestinal pathogens. A total of 83 paired blood and stool samples were collected from children aged five years or less. Infection markers of HBoV1, 2, or 3 (viral DNA in blood and/or stool and/or

Parvovirus as a cause of hydrops fetalis: detection by in situ DNA hybridisation.

Lung tissue from 13 cases of unexplained non-immunological hydrops fetalis was examined by in situ hybridisation to detect parvovirus. Four specimens contained parvovirus DNA in cells in the blood vessel lumina and alveoli. Twenty six control cases were negative for parvovirus DNA. As there was no known epidemic of parvovirus infection during the study period, this suggests that parvovirus is a relatively common cause of non-immunological hydrops fetalis. In situ hybridisation may have a role in clinical medicine, particularly for retrospective investigations.

Aleutian Disease: An Emerging Disease in Free-Ranging Striped Skunks (Mephitis mephitis) From California.

Aleutian disease virus (ADV, Amdovirus, Parvoviridae) primarily infects farmed mustelids (mink and ferrets) but also other fur-bearing animals and humans. Three Aleutian disease (AD) cases have been described in captive striped skunks; however, little is known about the relevance of AD in free-ranging carnivores. This work describes the pathological findings and temporospatial distribution in 7 cases of AD in free-ranging striped skunks. All cases showed neurologic disease and were found in a 46-month period (2010-2013) within a localized geographical region in California. Lesions included mul

Teratogenic bluetongue and related orbivirus infections in pregnant ruminant livestock: timing and pathogen genetics are critical.

Congenital infections of domestic animals with viruses in several families, including Bunyaviridae, Flaviridae, Parvoviridae, and Reoviridae, are the cause of naturally occurring teratogenic central nervous system and/or musculoskeletal defects (arthrogryposis) in domestic animals. Congenital infections of ruminant livestock with bluetongue virus (BTV) and some related members of the genus Orbivirus (family Reoviridae) have clearly shown the critical role of gestational age at infection in determining outcome. Specifically, fetuses infected prior to mid-gestation that survive congenital BTV in

An unusual cause of cerebellar ataxia in an immunocompromised elderly patient.

BACKGROUND: Parvovirus B19 is a single-stranded DNA virus belonging to the family Parvoviridae, genus Erythrovirus. PVB19 infection is most common in the pediatric population, manifesting as erythema infectiosum. In patients with hemoglobinopathy, PVB19 infection is known to cause aplastic anemia. PVB19 infection rarely affects the nervous system - reported manifestations include seizures, encephalitis and meningoencephalitis. Less common presentations include stroke, cerebellar ataxia, optic neuritis, brachial plexitis, Guillain-Barré syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome. METHODS: Review the

Characterization of a parvovirus isolated from a pig fetus.

A small hemagglutinating virus belonging to the Parvoviridae Family was isolated from a 70 day-old pig fetus in a breeding herd in which infertility, metritis and abortions were reported. The virus, named 85/193L, was isolated either in primary pig kidney (PK) cells or in a continuous cell line of minipig kidney origin (MPK), both cell cultures actively growing. It produced a typical cytopathic effect (CPE) starting from the 3rd passage and intranuclear inclusions surrounded by a halo were observed in stained preparations. The isolate was completely resistant to ether, chloroform and to pH 3;

[Molecular biological demonstration of parvovirus infection in fetal tissue].

We report on the morphological findings in 16 fetuses with serologically confirmed maternal parvovirus B19 infection. Typical routine morphological findings of the hydropic fetuses were the presence of abnormal erythroblasts with typical nuclear inclusions. These infected cells positively stained immunohistochemically with antibodies against a recombinant virus protein, as well as they ultrastructurally contained virus particles. Using in-situ hybridization techniques, we were able to demonstrate the presence of parvovirus B19 genome in the infected cells, while no other cell type was shown to

Exogenous amdoparvoviruses (Parvoviridae) in arvicoline voles: the molecular evolution and ecology of a novel host-viral association.

Amdoparvoviruses are best known as agents of disease in carnivorans, but here we provide the first in-depth molecular evolutionary and ecological information for an amdoparvovirus in wild rodents (field voles, Microtus agrestis). We applied an RNA-sequencing approach in lung tissue that yielded high diagnostic sensitivity and multiple full or near-full coding sequences for the new virus (field vole amdoparvovirus, FVAV) in individual voles. FVAV is most similar to amdoparvoviruses in European foxes and wildcats. We present evidence that FVAV is an exogenous, endemic, high-prevalence infection

Structural and immunogenic characteristics of goose parvovirus virus-like particles.

Goose parvovirus (GPV) is a highly lethal infectious pathogen primarily affecting goslings under one month old, with infection resulting in nearly 100 % mortality. However, no recombinant vaccine has been proven effective in preventing GPV infection. This study aims to structurally characterize GPV virus-like particles (VLPs) produced from Saccharomyces cerevisiae using cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) and three-dimensional reconstruction, to explore potential binding receptors, and to preliminarily verify the immunogenicity of GPV VLPs. The results show that GPV VLPs produced from Saccharom

Analysis of parvovirus infections using strand-specific hybridization probes.

The autonomous parvoviruses cause a broad spectrum of acute and chronic infections of animals and man. The discrimination of sites of viral replication from sites of viral sequestration is an important goal in elucidating the pathogenesis of these diseases. It is possible to employ strand-specific RNA hybridization probes in such analyses because a 'plus' sense probe will react with single stranded virion DNA and duplex replicative form DNA, but a 'minus' sense probe will react preferentially with obligate replicative intermediates (duplex replicative form DNA and mRNA). Strand-specific RNA hy

Intrauterine infection with human parvovirus B19: a light and electron microscopy study.

Recent reports have documented human parvovirus B19 infection in pregnancy, which may lead to spontaneous abortion, stillbirth or hydrops fetalis. Transplacental infection in a case of hydrops fetalis is demonstrated by light and electron microscopy observation of virus inclusions in all tissues examined. Parvovirus particles measuring approximately 20 nm were observed within the nuclei of erythropoietic cells. The parvovirus virions were observed most commonly as randomly distributed particles and rarely in crystalline assays. Thus definitive evidence of fetal infection confined to red cell p

Identification of a novel Ungulate copiparvovirus 10 in sheep of Hami, East Xinjiang, China.

Parvovirinae viruses are a subfamily of the Parvoviridae family that can infect various vertebrate hosts and cause infections ranging from asymptomatic to severe disease. This study performed a metagenomic assessment of the sheep sera virome to evaluate emerging and exotic viruses in border zones, and identified a novel copiparvovirus. The DNA of Ovine copiparvovirus (OVPV) was only observed in the serum of sheep in Dahe Town of Hami City. Furthermore, the region-dependent prevalence was 10.4% (96/807) from 2022 to 2024. The OVPV genome was 5,219 nucleotides (nt) long and shared 99.3% nt ident

Parvovirus B19 Infection and Pregnancy: Review of the Current Knowledge.

Parvovirus B19, a member of the Parvoviridae family, is a human pathogenic virus. It can be transmitted by respiratory secretions, hand-to-mouth contact, blood transfusion, or transplacental transmission. Most patients are asymptomatic or present with mild symptoms such as erythema infectiosum, especially in children. In rare cases, moderate-to-severe symptoms may occur, affecting blood cells and other systems, resulting in anemia, thrombocytopenia, and neutropenia. Non-immune pregnant women are at risk for fetal infection by parvovirus B19, with greater complications if transmission occurs in

Concise review: Anemia caused by viruses.

Most of the viruses known to be associated with anemia in human tend to persistently infect their host and are noncytopathic or poorly cytopathic for blood cell progenitors. Infections with Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, varicella-zoster virus, human herpes virus 6 (HHV-6), B19 parvovirus, human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis A and C viruses and the putative viral agent associated with non-A-G post-hepatitis aplastic anemia have been reported in association with anemia. Nevertheless, a direct cytotoxic effect on erythroid progenitors has been clearly demonstrated only for human parvov
