Resolving Phylogenetic Relationships within Passeriformes Based on Mitochondrial Genes and Inferring the Evolution of Their Mitogenomes in Terms of Duplications.

Mitochondrial genes are placed on one molecule, which implies that they should carry consistent phylogenetic information. Following this advantage, we present a well-supported phylogeny based on mitochondrial genomes from almost 300 representatives of Passeriformes, the most numerous and differentiated Aves order. The analyses resolved the phylogenetic position of paraphyletic Basal and Transitional Oscines. Passerida occurred divided into two groups, one containing Paroidea and Sylvioidea, whereas the other, Passeroidea and Muscicapoidea. Analyses of mitogenomes showed four types of rearrange

Mites inhabiting nests of wood warbler, Phylloscopus sibilatrix (Aves: Passeriformes), in the Wielkopolska National Park in western Poland.

The wood warbler, Phylloscopus sibilatrix (Aves: Passeriformes), is a well-known model organism for studying bird migration, breeding habitat selection and nest predation. The nest acarofauna of this bird species has not been extensively studied so far. To provide a comprehensive report on mite species inhabiting wood warbler nests and to assess infestation parameters (prevalence, intensity, and abundance) for mite species and orders, we collected 45 nests of this bird species in the Wielkopolska National Park in western Poland. Analyses revealed a huge diversity (198 species) of mites inhabit

COSPECIATION PATTERNS OF TWO GROUPS OF CHEWING LICE (INSECTA: PHTHIRAPTERA: ISCHNOCERA AND AMBLYCERA) INFESTING ASIAN SONGBIRDS (AVES: PASSERIFORMES).

Cospeciation has been observed multiple times between parasites and their hosts. Here we compare the phylogeny of 2 different groups of chewing lice (Phthiraptera), one known for being host specific (Amblycera: Myrsidea) and one known for including many generalist species (Ischnocera: Brueelia-complex, specifically Guimaraesiella and Priceiella) with that of their songbird hosts (Passeriformes), which are participants in mixed-species feeding flocks in South China. Using event- (Jane) and distance-based (ParaFit) analyses we found that both groups of lice have phylogenies that are more similar

Interactions between the Avian Parasite, Philornis downsi (Diptera: Muscidae) and the Galapagos Flycatcher, Myiarchus magnirostris Gould (Passeriformes: Tyrannidae).

An incidental observation of the fly Philornis downsi parasitizing a Galapagos Flycatcher (Myiarchus magnirostris) nest has revealed new insights into the searching behavior and biology of this invasive fly parasite and its interactions with endemic landbirds in the Galapagos Islands. Observations suggest that P. downsi relies on olfactory cues, or olfactory cues combined with the activity of adult birds, to locate nests and that flies continue to visit nests when chicks are >3 d old. At least 200 eggs were laid by P. downsi in different parts of the nest and >40 early-instar larvae were found

Taxonomic Revision of the Genus Bulbultaenia Beveridge, 1994 (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) Parasitic in Palaeotropical Birds of the Family Pycnonotidae (Passeriformes).

PURPOSE: Until now, Bulbultaenia has been considered a monotypic genus. Its type species B. calcaruterina (Burt, 1939) was described from the red-vented bulbul Pycnonotus cafer haemorrhousus (Pycnonotidae) in Sri Lanka and later recorded from three host species in the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire. The purpose of the present study is to revise the data on the species composition and geographical distribution of the genus Bulbultaenia. METHODS: Specimens deposited in museum collections were re-examined, and an additional specimen from Gabon was stained with iron acetocarmine and mounted in Canada

Outbreak of Esophagitis and Ingluvitis Caused by Salmonella Typhimurium in Passeriform Birds of the Genus Sporophila Seized from Wildlife Trafficking.

The occurrence of esophagitis and ingluvitis caused by Salmonella Typhimurium in passerines seized from illegal wildlife trafficking is described. This illegal activity causes stress and leads to lowered immunity in the birds. Additionally, inadequate hygiene conditions predispose the birds to diseases such as salmonellosis. Few studies report the occurrence of Salmonella-induced lesions in the esophagus and crop of passerines; therefore, this study aimed to describe the disease in birds of the genus Sporophila, as well as to investigate the presence of the bacterium in the environment and det
