Paternal incarceration and child-reported behavioral functioning at age 9.

Within the last few decades our understanding of the importance of non-cognitive skills for socioeconomic success has grown along with our knowledge of the deleterious impacts of paternal incarceration for child wellbeing. Given the importance of early skills and that elementary-aged children constitute the majority of children with incarcerated parents, understanding the connection between paternal incarceration and the socio-emotional component of children's non-cognitive development is pressing. Using matching models, data from the newest wave of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Stu

Paternal age at childbearing and offspring psychiatric and academic morbidity.

IMPORTANCE: Advancing paternal age is associated with increased genetic mutations during spermatogenesis, which research suggests may cause psychiatric morbidity in the offspring. The effects of advancing paternal age at childbearing on offspring morbidity remain unclear, however, because of inconsistent epidemiologic findings and the inability of previous studies to rigorously rule out confounding factors. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between advancing paternal age at childbearing and numerous indexes of offspring morbidity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We performed a popula

Association of paternal age with prevalence of selected birth defects.

BACKGROUND: Unlike maternal age, the effect of paternal age on birth defect prevalence has not been well examined. We used cases from the Texas birth defect registry, born during 1996-2002, to evaluate the association of paternal age with the prevalence of selected structural birth defects. METHODS: Poisson regression was used to calculate prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) associated with paternal age for each birth defect, adjusting for maternal age, race/ethnicity, and parity. RESULTS: Relative to fathers ages 25-29 years, fathers 20-24 years of age were more likel

Paternity after cryptorchidism: lack of correlation with age at orchidopexy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether paternity is decreased among men who were formerly unilaterally or bilaterally cryptorchid and to ascertain whether paternity is related to their age at orchidopexy. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Men who underwent orchidopexy between 1955 and 1969 at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh (363) and a group of age-matched control men (336) were surveyed by questionnaire and their medical records reviewed. RESULTS: Of the married men, significantly more of the unilateral cryptorchid (75%) and control (76%) groups had fathered children than had the bilateral cryptorchid g

Selective mutation accumulation: a computational model of the paternal age effect.

MOTIVATION: As the mean age of parenthood grows, the effect of parental age on genetic disease and child health becomes ever more important. A number of autosomal dominant disorders show a dramatic paternal age effect due to selfish mutations: substitutions that grant spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) a selective advantage in the testes of the father, but have a deleterious effect in offspring. In this paper we present a computational technique to model the SSC niche in order to examine the phenomenon and draw conclusions across different genes and disorders. RESULTS: We used a Markov chain to

Paternal age and offspring congenital heart defects: a national cohort study.

Paternal age has been associated with offspring congenital heart defects (CHDs), which might be caused by increased mutations in the germ cell line because of cumulated cell replications. Empirical evidences, however, remain inconclusive. Furthermore, it is unknown whether all subtypes of CHDs are affected by paternal age. We aimed to explore the relationship between paternal age and the risk of offspring CHDs and its five common subtypes using national register data in Denmark. A total of 1,893,899 singletons born in Denmark from 1977 to 2008 were included in this national-based cohort study.

Paternal age >or=40 years: an important risk factor for infertility.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the risk of infertility that is associated with paternal age, because this factor rarely has been investigated, whereas maternal age of >or=35 years is a well-known risk factor. STUDY DESIGN: This large, retrospective, population-based sample included 6188 European women (from Denmark, Italy, Spain, Germany) aged 25 to 44 years who were selected randomly from census registers in 1991 through 1993. RESULTS: Among couples composed of a woman aged 35 to 39 years, risks were significantly higher when paternal age was >or=40 years than when pate

Effect of paternal age in achondroplasia, thanatophoric dysplasia, and osteogenesis imperfecta.

The paternal ages of nonfamilial cases of achondroplasia (AC) (n = 78), thanatophoric dysplasia (TD) (n = 64), and osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) (n = 106), were compared with those of matched controls, from an Italian Indagine Policentrica Italiana sulle Malformazioni Congenite and a South American Estudio Colaborativo Latinoamericano de Malformaciones Congénitas series. The degree of paternal age effect on the origin of these dominant mutations differed among the three conditions. Mean paternal age was highly elevated in AC, 36.30 +/- 6.74 years in the IPIMC, and 37.19 +/- 10.53 years in the E

Older paternal age and fresh gene mutation: data on additional disorders.

Older paternal age has previously been documented as a factor in sporadic fresh mutational cases of several autosomal dominant disorders. In this collaborative study, an older mean paternal age has been documented in sporadic cases of at least five additional dominantly inheritable disorders; the basal cell nevus syndrome, the Waardenburg syndrome, the Crouzon syndrome, the oculo-dental-digital sysdrome, and the Treacher-Collins syndrome. It was also found to be a factor in acrodysostosis and progeria, suggesting a fresh mutant gene etiology for these two conditions in which virtually all case

Paternal germ line aging: DNA methylation age prediction from human sperm.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between aging and epigenetic profiles has been highlighted in many recent studies. Models using somatic cell methylomes to predict age have been successfully constructed. However, gamete aging is quite distinct and as such age prediction using sperm methylomes is ineffective with current techniques. RESULTS: We have produced a model that utilizes human sperm DNA methylation signatures to predict chronological age by utilizing methylation array data from a total of 329 samples. The dataset used for model construction includes infertile patients, sperm donors, and i

Advanced Paternal Age and Risk of Musculoskeletal Congenital Anomalies in Offspring.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests that advanced paternal age increases the risk of musculoskeletal congenital anomalies (CAs) in offspring, but findings are inconsistent. This study aims to investigate the risk of musculoskeletal CAs according to paternal age at birth in an unselected population covering cohort of children. STUDY DESIGN: A register-based prospective study of 1,605,885 children born in Denmark, 1978-2004, using information from record-linked health and administrative registers. Advanced Paternal Age and Sperm Proteome Dynamics: A Possible Explanation for Age-Associated Male Fertility Decline.

Male fertility is strongly influenced by environmental exposures, lifestyle, and advancing age. While advanced paternal age (APA) has been linked with a progressive decline in male fertility, poor reproductive outcomes, and decreased offspring health, the molecular mechanisms underlying these alterations remain unclear. In this work, we investigated the impact of men's age on human sperm protein expression and phosphorylation to identify molecular alterations possibly responsible for the age-associated decline in male fertility. Semen samples from volunteers attending fertility consultations a

Familial factors rather than paternal age contribute to the aetiology of epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Whether paternal age associated with offspring's epilepsy risk is a cause of de novo mutation as men age, or just an association due to confounding factors, is still unclear. Maternal and paternal age are jointly associated with childhood autism in Jamaica.

Several studies have reported maternal and paternal age as risk factors for having a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), yet the results remain inconsistent. We used data for 68 age- and sex-matched case-control pairs collected from Jamaica. Using Multivariate General Linear Models (MGLM) and controlling for parity, gestational age, and parental education, we found a significant (p < 0.0001) joint effect of parental ages on having children with ASD indicating an adjusted mean paternal age difference between cases and controls of [5.9 years; 95% CI (2.6, 9.1)] and a difference for matern

Assisted reproduction with advancing paternal and maternal age: an Ethics Committee opinion.

Ethical considerations for developing policies regarding providing assisted reproductive care to individuals of advanced reproductive age are complex; considerations include both reproductive autonomy and the well-being of the potential offspring. This document replaces the previously published document titled "Oocyte or embryo donation to women of advanced reproductive age: an Ethics Committee opinion" (Fertil Steril 2016;106:e3-7).

Advancing paternal age does not negatively impact fresh embryo transfer cycle outcomes.

RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the impact of advancing paternal age, stratifying for maternal age, on fresh embryo transfer cycle outcomes? DESIGN: All first autologous fresh embryo transfer cycles between 2013 and 2019 at a single high-volume academic institution were retrospectively reviewed. Female age was dichotomized along the cohort median of (37 years) (Female-Young [F-Y]: <37 years; Female-Old [F-O]: ≥37 years). Male age was stratified along the cohort median (38 years) and 90th centile (48 years) (Male-Young [M-Y]: <38 years; Male-Intermediate [M-I]: ≤38 and >48 years; Male-Old [M-O]: ≥4

Association between paternal age and singleton birthweight in frozen embryo transfer cycles.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have considered maternal age as a determinant factor for success in assisted reproductive technologies (ART), but the potential role of paternal age on neonatal outcomes has been overlooked. This study aimed to explore the association between paternal age and birthweight in frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles. METHODS: This retrospective study involved singleton live births born to women undergoing frozen embryo transfer from January 2013 to December 2017 at a tertiary care center in Shanghai, China. The paternal age was classified into four categories: ≤ 30, 31-35, 3

Advanced paternal age, infertility, and reproductive risks: A review of the literature.

Advanced paternal age (APA) is associated with infertility and other reproductive risks. Studies looking at APA and outcomes have used different paternal age cut-offs, which has complicated systematic evaluations of reproductive risk associated with paternal aging. This review of the literature suggests that the impact of paternal aging on adverse reproductive outcomes is small, but significant. Studies suggest the incidence of paternal age effect disorders attributed to de novo autosomal dominant mutations is less than 0.5%. Other risks associated with APA include infertility, miscarriage, bi
