Paternal coparenting and prosocial behavior among Tibetan adolescents: Mediating effects of father-child attachment and moderating effects of emotional stability.

Across cultural contexts, fathers tend to be less directly involved in daily caregiving than mothers, yet the quality of interparental coordination in child-rearing, known as coparenting, may constitute a critical pathway through which paternal influence is associated with adolescent development. This study examined the associations between paternal coparenting and prosocial behavior among Tibetan adolescents, with father-child attachment as a mediator and emotional stability as a moderator. Using multi-stage stratified random sampling, we recruited 591 Tibetan adolescents (Mage = 13.87 years,

Paternal heroin self-administration in rats increases drug-seeking behavior in male offspring via miR-19b downregulation in the nucleus accumbens.

Accumulating evidence indicates that drug addiction may lead to adaptive behavioral changes in offspring, potentially due to epigenetic modifications in parental germline. However, the underlying mechanisms remain inadequately understood. In this study, we show that paternal heroin self-administration (SA) increased heroin-seeking behavior in the F1 generation, when compared with offspring sired by yoke-infused control males, indicating cross-generational impact of paternal voluntary heroin seeking behavior. Notably, the increase of heroin seeking behavior in offspring was replicated by zygoti

Explaining the Link Between Paternal Socioeconomic Position and Small for Gestational Age Birth: The Effect of Maternal Unhealthy Behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the proportion of small for gestational age (weight < 10th percentile, SGA) births among fathers with lifelong low (compared to high) socioeconomic position (SEP) attributable to white and African-American women's unhealthy pregnancy-related behaviors. METHODS: Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition methods were conducted on the Illinois transgenerational dataset of infants (1989-1991) and their Chicago-born parents (1956-1976) with appended US census income data. The neighborhood income of father's residence at the time of his birth and at the time of his infant's birth were us

Paternal methylphenidate exposure alters sperm miRNAs and induces intergenerational behavioral and transcriptional changes that are largely reversed by washout.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Methylphenidate (MPH), a first-line medication, is often used long-term and not routinely discontinued in individuals planning to have children. Guided by the Paternal Origins of Health and Disease framework, in this study, we investigated intergenerational effects of paternal MPH exposure and reversibility of sperm epigenetic changes. Male BALB/c mice received MPH (15 mg/kg) or vehicle for 28 days and were mated with untreated females immediately after

Unraveling sex differences in maternal and paternal care impacts on social behaviors and neurobiological responses to early-life adversity.

Early-life stress (ELS) affects the development of prosocial behaviors and social-cognitive function, often leading to structural brain changes and increased psychosocial disorders. Recent studies suggest that mother- and father-child relationships independently influence social development in a sex-specific manner, but the effects of impaired father-child relationships are often overlooked. This review examines preclinical rodent studies to explore how parental neglect impacts neuroplasticity and social behaviors in offspring. We highlight that disruptions in maternal interactions may affect

Autism-linked UBE3A gain-of-function mutation causes interneuron and behavioral phenotypes when inherited maternally or paternally in mice.

The E3 ubiquitin ligase Ube3a is biallelically expressed in neural progenitors and glial cells, suggesting that UBE3A gain-of-function mutations might cause neurodevelopmental disorders irrespective of parent of origin. Here, we engineered a mouse line that harbors an autism-linked UBE3AT485A (T503A in mouse) gain-of-function mutation and evaluated phenotypes in animals that inherited the mutant allele paternally, maternally, or from both parents. We find that paternally and maternally expressed UBE3AT503A results in elevated UBE3A activity in neural progenitors and glial cells. Expression of

Resentment of paternalism as system change sentiment: hostile sexism toward men and actual behavior in the 2008 U.S. presidential election.

Taking inspiration from Glick and colleagues (2004), this study tested the idea that resentment of paternalism (which is part of the hostile sexism toward men construct) might approximate desire for system change by correlating this variable with actual behavior associated with system change in a single culture. Specifically, voting behavior in the 2008 U.S. presidential election was predicted from political party affiliation, measures of hostile and benevolent sexism toward both women and men, and egalitarian racial attitudes using a U.S. college student sample. Results indicated that the onl

Paternal morphine exposure in rats reduces social play in adolescent male progeny without affecting drug-taking behavior in juvenile males or female offspring.

The ongoing opioid addiction crisis necessitates the identification of novel risk factors to improve prevention and treatment of opioid use disorder. Parental opioid exposure has recently emerged as a potential regulator of offspring vulnerability to opioid misuse, in addition to heritable genetic liability. An understudied aspect of this "missing heritability" is the developmental presentation of these cross-generational phenotypes. This is an especially relevant question in the context of inherited addiction-related phenotypes, given the prominent role of developmental processes in the etiol

Paternal line multigenerational passage of altered risk assessment behavior in female but not male rat offspring of mothers fed a low protein diet.

Maternal low protein (MLP) diets in pregnancy and lactation impair offspring brain development and modify offspring behavior. We hypothesized multigenerational passage of altered behavioral outcomes as has been demonstrated following other developmental programming challenges. We investigated potential multigenerational effects of MLP in rat pregnancy and/or lactation on offspring risk assessment behavior. Founder generation mothers (F0) ate 20% casein (C) or restricted (R) 10% casein diet, providing four groups: CC, RR, CR, and RC (first letter pregnancy, second letter lactation diet) to eval

Associations of maternal and paternal preconception and maternal pregnancy urinary phthalate biomarker and bisphenol A concentrations with offspring autistic behaviors: The PEACE study.

BACKGROUND: Environmental chemical exposures in utero may play a role in autism development. While preconception risk factors for autism are increasingly being investigated, little is known about the influence of chemical exposures during the preconception period, particularly for paternal exposures. METHODS: In 195 children from the Preconception Environmental exposures And Childhood health Effects (PEACE) cohort born to parents recruited from a fertility clinic in Boston, Massachusetts between 2004 and 2017, we quantified concentrations of 11 phthalate metabolites and bisphenol A (BPA) in u

The impact of paternal alcoholism and maternal social position on boys' school adjustment, pubertal maturation and sexual behavior: a test of two competing hypotheses.

Two competing hypotheses concerning the effects of stressful environments on the onset of puberty were tested using longitudinal data for a sample of boys from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Paternal alcoholism and maternal social position were used as indicators of family stress. School placement was monitored from school entry to 14 years of age. Teachers rated the boys' disruptive and anxious behaviors, while the boys reported on parenting behaviors at 10 years of age. Pubertal maturation, age of first sexual intercourse and sexual behavior were assessed between 11 and 14 years of age. The

Investigating the significance of the transgenerational impact of high and repeated doses of ivermectin: Effects on paternal testis histopathology, pups' development, and sexual behavior.

Paternal exposure to environmental challenges is critical for the offspring's future health, and the transmission of acquired traits through generations increases the risk of offspring developing diseases. Ivermectin (IVM) is widely used in veterinary and human medicine to treat parasitosis. Our previous studies showed that IVM acute administration induced disorganization of the germinal epithelium and could cause damage to sperm production. Thus, this study investigated the effects of paternal exposure to repeated high ivermectin doses on paternal testis histology. After mating, their pups' d

Paternal Prenatal and Lactation Exposure to a High-Calorie Diet Shapes Transgenerational Brain Macro- and Microstructure Defects, Impacting Anxiety-Like Behavior in Male Offspring Rats.

Prenatal exposure to high-energy diets (HED) increases the susceptibility to behavioral alterations in the male offspring. We addressed whether prenatal HED primes the transgenerational inheritance of structural brain changes impacting anxiety/depression-like behavior in the offspring. For this, we used female Wistar rats exposed to a HED [cafeteria (CAF) diet, n = 6] or chow [control (CON) n = 6] during development. Anxiety and depression-like behavior were evaluated in filial 1 (F1), filial 2 (F2), and filial 3 (F3) male offspring using the open field (OFT), elevated plus maze, novelty suppr

The impact of paternal PTSD-like stress on cognitive behavior and hippocampal BDNF expression in adolescent male and female rat offspring: modulatory effects of lithium.

Prenatal stress may lead to cognitive and behavioral dysfunction in the offspring. Large evidence has shown the deleterious effects of maternal stress on cognitive and behavioral functions of the offspring; however, the effect of paternal stress has not been well documented. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effect of paternal stress (chronic electrical footshocks, post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD-like model) on cognitive and behavioral functions, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) hippocampal level in both male and female offspring during adolescence. The fathe

Interparental conflict, parent psychopathology, hostile parenting, and child antisocial behavior: examining the role of maternal versus paternal influences using a novel genetically sensitive research design.

Past research has linked interparental conflict, parent psychopathology, hostile parenting, and externalizing behavior problems in childhood. However, few studies have examined these relationships while simultaneously allowing the contribution of common genetic factors underlying associations between family- and parent-level variables on child psychopathology to be controlled. Using the attributes of a genetically sensitive in vitro fertilization research design, the present study examined associations among interparental conflict, parents' antisocial behavior problems, parents' anxiety sympto

Paternal exposure to exercise and/or caffeine and alcohol modify offspring behavioral and pathophysiological recovery from repetitive mild traumatic brain injury in adolescence.

Only recently has the scope of parental research expanded to include the paternal sphere with epidemiological studies implicating stress, nutrition and alcohol consumption in the neurobiological and behavioral characteristics of offspring. This study was designed to determine if paternal exposure to caffeine, alcohol and exercise prior to conception would improve or exacerbate offspring recovery from adolescent repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (RmTBI). Sires received 7 weeks of standard drinking water, or caffeine and ethanol and were housed in regular cages or cages with running wheels,

Effect of paternal exposure to glyphosate and microcystin-LR on zebrafish (Danio rerio) fathers and progeny: An integrated investigation based on behavioral, histopathological, biochemical, and transcriptomic analysis.

The coexistence of glyphosate (GLY) and microcystin-LR (MC-LR) in the environment has become a problem that cannot be ignored. However, the combined toxic effects of these compounds on aquatic organisms remain underexplored. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the individual and combined effects of GLY and MC-LR on the neurobehavior of exposed adult zebrafish and their untreated offspring (F1 larvae), as well as to explore the underlying mechanisms. In this study, six month old male zebrafish were exposed to 3.5 mg/L GLY and 35 μg/L MC-LR, alone and in combination, for 21 d. The results

Neonatal paternal deprivation impairs social recognition and alters levels of oxytocin and estrogen receptor α mRNA expression in the MeA and NAcc, and serum oxytocin in mandarin voles.

Paternal care is necessary for the healthy development of social behavior in monogamous rodents and social recognition underpins social behavior in these animals. The effects of paternal care on the development of social recognition and underlying neuroendocrine mechanisms, especially the involvement of oxytocin and estrogen pathways, remain poorly understood. We investigated the effects of paternal deprivation (PD: father was removed from neonatal pups and mother alone raised the offspring) on social recognition in mandarin voles (Microtus mandarinus), a socially monogamous rodent. Paternal Incarceration and Early Sexual Onset among Adolescents.

Despite a growing literature documenting deleterious intergenerational consequences of incarceration, relatively little is known about how exposure to paternal incarceration is associated with risk behaviors in adolescence. In this article, we use data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 3,405)-a cohort of urban children born around the turn of the 21st century and followed for 15 years-to examine the relationship between paternal incarceration and one indicator of adolescent risk behavior, early sexual onset. Results from adjusted logistic regression models show that pate
