Functional vision in patients with neovascular maculopathy and poor visual acuity.

Central visual function is characteristically reported as Snellen acuity at distance and near. We performed functional tests in a group of patients with visual acuity of 20/100 or worse due to macular disease to determine whether there was a relationship between Snellen acuity and functional performance among these patients with poor visual acuity. Our tests of functional performance included currency discrimination, color recognition, reading a clock, and reading large print. Our results suggest that there is a correlation between Snellen acuity and functional vision, even among patients with

Laser interferometric prediction of postoperative visual acuity in patients with cataracts.

I used the laser interferometer to test 137 eyes to determine whether preoperative interference visual acuity tests could accurately predict postoperative Snellen visual acuities. In 60 patients with immature cataracts and normal maculas the postoperative Snellen visual acuity was predictable within one line in 53 patients and within two lines in seven others. In 29 other patients with cataracts and senile macular scars or macular degeneration without subretinal fluid postoperative Snellen visual acuity was predictable within one line in 26 patients and within two lines in two others. Several

Preferential looking acuity obtained with a staircase procedure in pediatric patients.

Visual acuity of infants and young children with ophthalmologic disorders was assessed by adapting a transformed up-down staircase to preferential looking (PL) procedures. Eighty-five percent of pediatric patients between 11 days and 5 years of age were tested successfully. Acuity of infants and young children with normal eyes obtained by the PL staircase procedure agreed well with acuities obtained previously by the method of constant stimuli. In children with anisometropia, differences in acuity between eyes varied systematically with the amount of anisometropia. Monocular acuities of untrea

Acuity of Patients Undergoing Congenital Heart Surgery During Hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: Since 2014, Complexity Assessment and Monitoring to Ensure Optimal Outcomes (CAMEO) acuity tools have guided pediatric critical care and acute nurse staffing decisions. Using these data, we constructed a cardiac intensive care postoperative timeline, the CAMEO Acuity Curve, for 3 congenital heart surgery procedures. We now expand both procedures and timeline to comprehensively describe patient acuity during hospitalization. METHODS: We reviewed 5 common congenital heart procedures between November 2018 and December 2023-Stage I palliation for single ventricle, arterial switch oper

Dynamic visual acuity testing for screening patients with vestibular impairments.

Dynamic visual acuity (DVA) may be a useful indicator of the function of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) but most DVA tests involve active head motion in the yaw plane. During gait the passive, vertical VOR may be more relevant and passive testing would be less likely to elicit compensatory strategies. The goal of this study was to determine if testing dynamic visual acuity during passive vertical motion of the subject would differentiate normal subjects from patients with known vestibular disorders. Subjects, normals and patients who had been diagnosed with either unilateral vestibular weak

Patient acuity as a determinant of paramedics' frequency of being exposed to physically demanding work activities.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this investigation was to examine if paramedics' frequency of being exposed to highly physically demanding activities, or their perception of physical, clinical, and emotional demands were altered by patients' acuity level, operationalized using the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS). METHODS: Physical demands descriptions (PDD) were compiled from thirteen services across Canada. The observation sessions took place during a minimum of two full-shift (12-h) ride-outs at each service. Data were obtained from 53 ride-outs, which included a total of 190 calls. RES

POEMS syndrome in a 20-year-old patient diagnosed following a complaint of reduced visual acuity.

We report a case of POEMS syndrome in a 20-year-old patient diagnosed after visiting an eye clinic with a chief complaint of reduced visual acuity. A male university student aged 20 years was referred to our department complaining of blurred vision in both eyes that had persisted for 1 month. He also noted headache, nausea, and paresthesia in the lower extremities around the same time. The visual acuity of his right and left eye was 20/40 and 20/20, respectively. Optic disc edema and serous retinal detachment were present. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed no intracranial abnormalities,

Impact of Yoga and Naturopathy on Refractive Error and Visual Acuity in a Patient with Myopia.

Myopia, or near-sightedness, is a common refractive error characterized by difficulty in seeing distant objects clearly, caused by the elongation of the eyeball. Although various yoga techniques, diet, and mud therapy are effective in improving refractive error, the impact of yoga and naturopathy (YN) interventions on visual outcomes in myopia remains largely unexplored. A 22-year-old male visited our outpatient department with complaints of blurred distant vision. Clinical evaluation confirmed a diagnosis of myopia, with no associated systemic comorbidities. The participant underwent YN inter

Effect of prisms on visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and nystagmus in patients with albinism.

AIM: To investigate the effect of using base-out prisms on nystagmus, visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in patients with albinism. METHODS: In this interventional study, patients with albinism who had nystagmus were enrolled. A comprehensive eye exam was conducted, which included refraction, assessment of far and near vision acuity, and contrast sensitivity measurements. To check for the nystagmus, a videonystagmography was used. The tests were carried out in three modes: without any correction, with optical correction, and with correction using base-out prisms in three different powers,

Contrast sensitivity function in patients with macular disease and good visual acuity.

INTRODUCTION: Contrast sensitivity function (CSF) may better estimate a patient's visual function compared with visual acuity (VA). Our study evaluates the quick CSF (qCSF) method to measure visual function in eyes with macular disease and good letter acuity. METHODS: Patients with maculopathies (retinal vein occlusion, macula-off retinal detachment, dry age-related macular degeneration and wet age-related macular degeneration) and good letter acuity (VA ≥20/30) were included. The qCSF method uses an intelligent algorithm to measure CSF across multiple spatial frequencies. All maculopathy eye

Should Rib Fracture Patients be Treated at High Acuity Trauma Hospitals?

BACKGROUND: It is well known that severely injured trauma patients have better outcomes when treated at centers that routinely treat high acuity trauma. The benefits of specialty treatment for chest trauma have not been shown. We hypothesized that patients with high risk rib fractures treated in centers that care for high acuity trauma would have better outcomes than patients treated in other centers. METHODS: All rib fracture patients were identified via the 2016 National Inpatient Sample using ICD-10 codes; Abbreviated Injury Scales (AIS) and Elixhauser comorbidity scores were also extracte
