The importance of patient compliance in nonunion of forearm fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Studies on radius ulna shaft fractures are very important. Surgical treatment is generally administered due to the unstability caused by the dynamic effect of forearm muscles. Surgical technique, implant, osteoporosis, patient compliance can affect the surgical treatment and healing. PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 86-year-old female patient was admitted to emergency service with the complaint of protrusion of forearm implant from the skin. Physical examination revealed that 80° nonunion developed on the radial side. Therefore, protruded and exposed internal fixation materials were exc

Compliance with a massive transfusion protocol (MTP) impacts patient outcome.

BACKGROUND: About 5% of civilian trauma requires massive transfusion. Protocolized resuscitation with blood products to achieve high plasma:RBC ratio has been advocated to improve survival. Our objectives were to measure compliance to our institutional MTP, to identify quality assurance activities that could improve protocol compliance and to determine if protocol compliance was related to patient outcome. METHODS: The investigators determined 13 compliance criteria based upon our institutional protocol. We measured compliance in 72 consecutive MTP activations between January 2010 and Septemb

Development of a measure for orthodontists to evaluate patient compliance.

INTRODUCTION: Interruption of treatment and poor compliance are problems in orthodontics, especially when the patient does not pay for treatment. The aim of this study was to develop a measure for orthodontists, regardless of type of practice, to assess their opinions about patient compliance. METHODS: A questionnaire, based on an orthodontic patient cooperation scale, was modified in 2 pilot phases. The piloted version was tested among 249 respondents. A principal component analysis was performed that included factors with an eigenvalue greater than 1. Reliability was assessed by means of in

Factors precipitating congestive heart failure--role of patient non-compliance.

OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed to identify systematically the precipitating factors causing decompensation of heart failure and subsequent hospitalisation. We specially assessed the role of patient non-compliance with therapy as an important precipitating factor for heart failure, since it has not been systematically studied previously in an Indian setting where rheumatic heart disease is common. METHODS: In this cross-sectional analytical study, 125 cases of congestive heart failure hospitalized in Government Medical College, Nagpur, were studied. All the patients were thoroughly evaluated

Drug handling and patient compliance in an outpatient paediatric trial.

New routines for drug handling were used in a 24-week outpatient double-blind trial of naproxen versus acetylsalicylic acid in 80 patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. The clinician ordered tablets from the pharmacy for each patient by stating name, weight and randomization number. The pharmacy dispensed the drugs in sealed and labelled 1-week medication containers. Totally, 2176 containers were packed and distributed to the patients. Two errors in ordering of drugs were detected. Patient compliance was studied by tablet count in used containers returned by 25 of the patients. The calcu

Exploring Patient Activation and Compliance in Patients with Different Rheumatological Disorders.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess patient activation using patient activation measure 13 (PAM-13) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and axial spondyloarthritis (axSPA). Patients and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving patients with three rheumatological conditions (SLE, PsA, and axSPA). Patients were contacted either at the clinic or through social media platforms. Data, including demographics, PAM 13, Arabic compliance questionnaire for rheumatology (ACQR), and disease-related activity scores, were collected electronically. The analyses i

Evaluation of patient compliance with the use of scrotal cooling devices.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the compliance of infertile men with the use of scrotal cooling devices. As a secondary objective, sperm parameters, deoxyribonucleic acid fragmentation, and hormone profiles were examined. DESIGN: This exploratory study on scrotal cooling provided scrotal cooling devices to men with primary infertility and abnormal semen parameters. Feedback on the devices after their use was gathered in the form of a questionnaire, and semen parameters were examined after device use. SETTING: Single center infertility clinic in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. PATIENTS: Patients with prima

Patient Compliance With Maintenance Intravesical Therapy for Nonmuscle Invasive Bladder Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To assess patient adherence to intravesical instillation therapy for nonmuscle invasive urothelial carcinoma outside of clinical trials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the records of patients from 2000 to 2013 who received intravesical therapy for nonmuscle invasive urothelial carcinoma. Patients with evidence of tumor recurrence or progression were excluded. We performed univariable and multivariable regression analyses to predict adherence to intravesical therapy. RESULTS: A total of 729 patients started 861 induction cycles, 63% with bacillus Calmette-Guèrin (BCG) and 37% w

Improving Patient Compliance With Post-EVAR Surveillance May Prevent Late Rupture.

Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) has gained increasing popularity in the treatment of infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm. Despite its favorable early outcomes, the long-term efficacy of EVAR remains a concern. Late rupture is the ultimate treatment failure and continues to complicate EVAR. Univariate and multivariate analyses have identified factors predictive of late rupture. The importance of EVAR surveillance to prevent late complications is equally widely acknowledged. This article aims to present our current understanding of the precipitating factors of late rupture after EVAR and ex

A Wearable System for Evaluation of PSSE Compliance for AIS Patient.

For adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), a common condition in children, physiotherapy scoliosis-specific exercise (PSSE) is an effective conservative treatment. However, the long-term process of PSSE treatment often leads to low compliance during unsupervised exercises. In this study, we proposed a wearable system for the evaluation of PSSE compliance for AIS patients. The proposed system contains wearable devices and analysis software. The wearable device collected surface electromyography (sEMG) data from back muscles. We extracted features from sEMG data, and adopted support vector machi

Evaluation of treatment compliance in gout patients: a patient-centered study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Most studies on unsuccessful gout treatment suggest that knowledge gaps and inadequate physician interventions are major contributors. However, there is a lack of research on the extent to which patients, educated by knowledgeable and experienced physicians, adhere to these recommendations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study evaluated patients seen in university rheumatology clinics who were adequately informed about diet, target serum uric acid levels, and gout by rheumatologists. We assessed their compliance with treatment, clinical and laboratory findings, and disease status

Compliance with recommended care at trauma centers: association with patient outcomes.

BACKGROUND: State health departments and the American College of Surgeons focus on the availability of optimal resources to designate hospitals as trauma centers, with little emphasis on actual delivery of care. There is no systematic information on clinical practices at designated trauma centers. The objective of this study was to measure compliance with 22 commonly recommended clinical practices at trauma centers and its association with in-hospital mortality. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective observational study was conducted at 5 Level I trauma centers across the country. Participants were

Factors affecting patient compliance with compressive brace therapy for pectus carinatum.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify factors affecting patient compliance with brace therapy for pectus carinatum. METHODS: Eighty-six pectus carinatum patients who started brace therapy from August 2008 to November 2011 were included in this study. Patients were divided into two groups: patients who wore the brace for ≥6 months (compliance group) or patients who wore the brace for <6 months (non-compliance group). Factors affecting patient compliance were assessed at the last day of follow-up with a multiple-choice questionnaire. The questionnaire comprised seven items: pain at
