[TV-pattern reversal stimulus (VECPs) in determination of refraction (author's transl)].

Pattern reversal VECPs show a dependence on visual acuity and therefore are suitable for objective determination of refraction, this method, however, was of limited clinical use for two reasons, as, on the one hand, the required impulse parameter was difficult to change using the traditional mechanically functioning pattern stimulator and, on the other hand, diagnosis war very timeconsuming. Using a pattern impulse picture presented on a monitor by an electornic impulse apparatus all impulse parameters can easily be changed and throught he introduction of a microprocessorsystem the evaluation

Tinnitus impairs segregation of competing speech in normal-hearing listeners.

Many tinnitus patients report difficulties understanding speech in noise or competing talkers, despite having "normal" hearing in terms of audiometric thresholds. The interference caused by tinnitus is more likely central in origin. Release from informational masking (more central in origin) produced by competing speech may further illuminate central interference due to tinnitus. In the present study, masked speech understanding was measured in normal hearing listeners with or without tinnitus. Speech recognition thresholds were measured for target speech in the presence of multi-talker babble

Voice processing in dementia: a neuropsychological and neuroanatomical analysis.

Voice processing in neurodegenerative disease is poorly understood. Here we undertook a systematic investigation of voice processing in a cohort of patients with clinical diagnoses representing two canonical dementia syndromes: temporal variant frontotemporal lobar degeneration (n = 14) and Alzheimer's disease (n = 22). Patient performance was compared with a healthy matched control group (n = 35). All subjects had a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment including measures of voice perception (vocal size, gender, speaker discrimination) and voice recognition (familiarity, identification,

Functions of ventral visual cortex after bilateral medial temporal lobe damage.

Repeated stimuli elicit attenuated responses in visual cortex relative to novel stimuli. This adaptation can be considered as a form of rapid learning and a signature of perceptual memory. Adaptation occurs not only when a stimulus is repeated immediately, but also when there is a lag in terms of time and other intervening stimuli before the repetition. But how does the visual system keep track of which stimuli are repeated, especially after long delays and many intervening stimuli? We hypothesized that the hippocampus and medial temporal lobe (MTL) support long-lag adaptation, given that this

Geometric patterns of time-delay plots from different cardiac rhythms and arrhythmias using short-term EKG signals.

OBJECTIVE: To date, no systematic work has been intended to describe spatio-temporal patterns of cardiac rhythms using only short series of RR intervals, to facilitate visual or computerized-aided identification of EKG motifs for use in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to detect and classify eye-catching geometric patterns of Poincaré time-delay plots from different types of cardiac rhythms and arrhythmias using short-term EKG signals. METHODS: Approximately 150-300 representative, consecutive beats were retrieved from 24-h Holter registers of 100 patients with different heart rhy

Exploration of verbal and non-verbal semantic knowledge and autobiographical memories starting from popular songs in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: In mild Alzheimer's disease (AD), a deficit in episodic memory, particularly autobiographical memory, is clearly established. Several recent studies have also shown impaired semantic memory from the onset of the disease. Musical memory capacities may be especially preserved and listening to music might encourage autobiographical recall. The aim of this study was to explore recall of popular songs in AD. METHODS: We tested 12 patients with mild AD and 12 control subjects. We created a tool made up of old French popular songs: POP 10. This tool is a questionnaire composed of several

Inflectional spelling deficits in developmental dyslexia.

The goal of this study was to examine past-tense spelling deficits in developmental dyslexia and their relationship to phonological abilities, spoken morphological awareness and word specific orthographic memory. Three groups of children (28 9-year-old dyslexic, 28 chronological age-matched and 28 reading/spelling age-matched children) completed a battery of tests including spelling regularly inflected words (e.g., kissed) and matched one-morpheme words (e.g., wrist). They were also assessed on a range of tests of reading and spelling abilities and associated linguistic measures. Dyslexic chil

Perception of non-verbal auditory stimuli in Italian dyslexic children.

Auditory temporal processing deficits have been proposed as the underlying cause of phonological difficulties in Developmental Dyslexia. The hypothesis was tested in a sample of 20 Italian dyslexic children aged 8-14, and 20 matched control children. Three tasks of auditory processing of non-verbal stimuli, involving discrimination and reproduction of sequences of rapidly presented short sounds were expressly created. Dyslexic subjects performed more poorly than control children, suggesting the presence of a deficit only partially influenced by the duration of the stimuli and of inter-stimulus

Dyslexia and across-hands finger localization deficits.

Two experiments on finger localization are reported. Experiment 1 compared children who were poor readers with two groups of children matched to poor readers for sex and either age (CA controls) or reading age (RA controls). The participant's hands were kept out of his or her sight in a semi-open box while the fingers of one hand were lightly touched by the experimenter. The participant's task was to indicate, using the thumb of either the same hand (within-hand condition) or the opposite hand (across-hands condition) to respond, the finger(s) which had been touched by the experimenter. Real-time vibrotactile pattern generation and identification using discrete event-driven feedback.

This study assesses human identification of vibrotactile patterns by using real-time discrete event-driven feedback. Previously acquired force and bend sensor data from a robotic hand were used to predict movement-type (stationary, flexion, contact, extension, release) and object-type (no object, hard object, soft object) states by using decision tree (DT) algorithms implemented in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Six able-bodied humans performed a 2- and 3-step sequential pattern recognition task in which state transitions were signaled as vibrotactile feedback. The stimuli were genera

Pattern Perception in Quiet and at Different Signal to Noise Ratio in Children with Learning Disability.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess pattern perception at different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in children with learning disability (LD) and typically developing children. The first objective of this study was to estimate the identification scores in quiet and at different SNR (0 dB SNR and -5 dB SNR) in children with LD and to compare the result with the typically developing children. The second objective of the study was to estimate identification scores for words differing in syllable length (monosyllable, bisyllable, and trisyllable) for both the groups of children with LD and typicall

Processing of haptic texture information over sequential exploration movements.

Where textures are defined by repetitive small spatial structures, exploration covering a greater extent will lead to signal repetition. We investigated how sensory estimates derived from these signals are integrated. In Experiment 1, participants stroked with the index finger one to eight times across two virtual gratings. Half of the participants discriminated according to ridge amplitude, the other half according to ridge spatial period. In both tasks, just noticeable differences (JNDs) decreased with an increasing number of strokes. Those gains from additional exploration were more than th

[Specifics of perception of acoustic image of intrinsic bioelectric brain activity].

We studied the particularities of perception of the acoustic image of intrinsic EEG. We found that the assessment of perception of sounds, the presentation of which was synchronized and was agreed with current bioelectric brain activity, is higher that assessment of perception of acoustic EEG image presented in recorded form. Presentation of recorded acoustic image of EEG is accompanied by increased activity of beta-band in the frontal areas, while real-time presentation of acoustic EEG image is accompanied by the increase of slow wave activity: theta- and delta-bands of occipital areas of the

Reasoning and dyslexia: is visual memory a compensatory resource?

Effective reasoning is fundamental to problem solving and achievement in education and employment. Protocol studies have previously suggested that people with dyslexia use reasoning strategies based on visual mental representations, whereas non-dyslexics use abstract verbal strategies. This research presents converging evidence from experimental and individual differences perspectives. In Experiment 1, dyslexic and non-dyslexic participants were similarly accurate on reasoning problems, but scores on a measure of visual memory ability only predicted reasoning accuracy for dyslexics. In Experim

Development of a serial order in speech constrained by articulatory coordination.

Universal linguistic constraints seem to govern the organization of sound sequences in words. However, our understanding of the origin and development of these constraints is incomplete. One possibility is that the development of neuromuscular control of articulators acts as a constraint for the emergence of sequences in words. Repetitions of the same consonant observed in early infancy and an increase in variation of consonantal sequences over months of age have been interpreted as a consequence of the development of neuromuscular control. Yet, it is not clear how sequential coordination of a

Neural adaptation for novel objects during dynamic articulation.

Human observers readily identify objects with moving parts, and recognize their underlying structure even when the component parts undergo complex movement. This suggests the existence of neural representations that are invariant to motion and state of articulation, which together allow our visual system to maintain 'object constancy'. Ventral temporal cortex has previously been implicated in object perception and in coding object identity, but it is unclear where this is achieved when objects undergo motion-driven shape changes. In the present study, we use fMRI adaptation to probe the neural

Understanding the role of the prefrontal cortex in phonological processing.

Lesion studies have demonstrated impairments of specific types of phonological processes. However, results from neuropsychological studies of speech sound processing have been inconclusive as to the role of specific brain regions because of a lack of a one-to-one correspondence between behavioural patterns and lesion location. Functional neuroimaging studies have contributed more detailed information about the involvement of specific brain regions in a wide range of phonological tasks. A framework developed by Hickok and Poeppel to account for these neuropsychological and neuroimaging results

The Alien Antenna Sign: Physiological ⁶⁸Ga-FAPI Uptake in the Round Ligament.

68 Ga-FAPI PET/CT has emerged as a promising molecular imaging modality targeting cancer-associated fibroblasts, rather than tumor cells. We report a novel physiological uptake pattern on 68 Ga-FAPI PET/CT in a 56-year-old woman with newly diagnosed invasive lobular carcinoma of the right breast undergoing staging. 68 Ga-FAPI PET/CT demonstrated intense tracer uptake in the primary right breast tumor and a right level I axillary lymph node, consistent with FAPI expression in the primary malignancy and suspicious nodal involvement. In addition, bilateral linear, rope-like tracer uptake extendin

Auditory Stimulus Processing and Task Learning Are Adequate in Dyslexia, but Benefits From Regularities Are Reduced.

PURPOSE: The reading deficit for people with dyslexia is typically associated with linguistic, memory, and perceptual-discrimination difficulties, whose relation to reading impairment is disputed. We proposed that automatic detection and usage of serial sound regularities for individuals with dyslexia is impaired (anchoring deficit hypothesis), leading to the formation of less reliable sound predictions. Agus, Carrión-Castillo, Pressnitzer, and Ramus, (2014) reported seemingly contradictory evidence by showing similar performance by participants with and without dyslexia in a demanding auditor
