[Severity of injury of alcohol intoxicated pedestrians in street traffic].

The evaluation of 251 autopsy cases of pedestrians who suffered fatal accidents in road traffic documents that the influence of alcohol entails an additional risk of injury for pedestrians in motor car accidents. In particular, severe trauma to the head, thorax and abdomen occur, whilst injuries to the pelvis and limbs are generally not more serious than in sober pedestrians. In the classical collision constellation of the pedestrian at the front end of cars, the upper part of the body is evidently especially endangered in the further movement phase. This phenomenon might be connected above al

Factors that contribute to collision avoidance behaviours involving a single pedestrian versus a group of pedestrians in a natural environment.

Along busy walking paths many pedestrians walk in a group, thus challenging the collision avoidance behaviours of both the group and individual pedestrians. Here we sought to determine what factors contribute to these behaviours in a real-world environment. We hypothesized that pedestrian group size, spatial separation between parties, presence of an additional interferer not involved in the interaction, pedestrian distractedness, constraints to a pedestrian's mobility (i.e., holding or pushing an object), and pedestrian age would significantly influence the likelihood and extent of path devia

Pedestrian injuries in the United States: Shifting injury patterns with the introduction of pedestrian protection into the passenger vehicle fleet.

OBJECTIVE: Between 2010 and 2020, an annual average of more than 70,000 pedestrians were injured in U.S. motor vehicle crashes. Pedestrian fatalities increased steadily over that period, outpacing increases in vehicle occupant fatalities. Strategies for reducing pedestrian injuries include pedestrian crash prevention and improved vehicle design for protection of pedestrians in the crashes that cannot be prevented. This study focuses on understanding trends in injuries sustained in U.S. pedestrian crashes to inform continuing efforts to improve pedestrian crash protection in passenger vehicles.

Fatality rate of pedestrians and fatal crash involvement rate of drivers in pedestrian crashes: a case study of Iran.

The aim of this study was to uncover patterns of pedestrian crashes. In the first stage, 34,178 pedestrian-involved crashes occurred in Iran during a four-year period were grouped into homogeneous clusters using a clustering analysis. Next, some in-cluster and inter-cluster crash patterns were analysed. The clustering analysis yielded six pedestrian crash groups. Car/van/pickup crashes on rural roads as well as heavy vehicle crashes were found to be less frequent but more likely to be fatal compared to other crash clusters. In addition, after controlling for crash frequency in each cluster, it

Increased pedestrian mortality among the elderly.

Elderly pedestrians struck by motor vehicles have the highest mortality rate of all pedestrian injury victims. One thousand eighty-two motor vehicle-pedestrian accidents occurring in a metropolitan area over a 5-year period were studied. Age-specific injury rates and fatality rates were evaluated with respect to the injury severity scores (ISS) for all fatally injured autopsied pedestrians. Of the 1,082 injuries, 131 fatalities occurred. Mean ISSs were found to be significantly higher for pedestrians dying at the scene of the accident (mean ISS, 54.83) and higher for those dying in the emergen

Pedestrians' safety using projected time-to-collision to electric scooters.

Safety concern among electric scooter riders drives them onto sidewalks, endangering pedestrians and making them uncomfortable. Regulators' solutions are inconsistent and conflicting worldwide. Widely accepted pedestrian safety metrics may lead to converging solutions. Adapting the time-to-collision from car traffic safety, we define projected time-to-collision and experimentally study pedestrians' objective and subjective safety. We design isolated and crowd experiments using e-scooter-to-pedestrian interactions to assess the impact of various factors on objective safety. In addition, we cond

Distraction From Smartphones Changed Pedestrians' Walking Behaviors in Open Areas.

The prevalence of phone use has become a major concern for pedestrian safety. Using smartphones while walking reduces pedestrians' ability to perceive the environment by increasing their cognitive, manual, and visual demands. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of common phone tasks (i.e., reading, tapping, gaming) on walking behaviors during outdoor walking. Nineteen young adults were instructed to complete four walking conditions (walking only, walking-reading, walking-tapping, and walking-gaming) along an open corridor. Results showed that all three phone tasks increased

In-depth analysis of pedestrian crashes in Riyadh.

OBJECTIVE: Problems facing authorities and researchers of road traffic accidents in most developing countries include lack of data and clarity and accessibility problems with existing data. This resulted in a severe scarcity in information on pedestrian crashes, which, in turn, served as an obstacle facing all efforts to reduce these crashes. This study aims at studying pedestrian crashes with regard to their causes and characteristics in Riyadh, analyzing the bodily distribution of injuries in victims and determining the characteristics of pedestrians and drivers involved in these collisions.

Causes and consequences of pedestrian injuries in children.

UNLABELLED: Pedestrian-car collisions are in motorised countries one of the leading causes of unintentional-injury-related death and morbidity among children. The objective of this study was to assess correlations between the mode and the severity or post-traumatic sequels of the injury. A 12-year (1989-2001) retrospective study of children aged 0-16 years injured in pedestrian-motor-vehicle collisions was undertaken. An anonymous survey with questionnaires completed by families was conducted. In this time period, 501 children (average age: 7.9 years) were injured. The lack of visibility of th

Pedestrian fatalities in Alaska, 1980-1984.

During 1980-1984, 94 pedestrians (15.6% of 601 total traffic-related fatalities) were killed and 1,293 were injured in Alaska. The pedestrian fatality rate for Alaskan Natives (10.95 per 100,000 population per year) was four times the rate for non-Natives (2.84 per 100,000 population per year), and in Anchorage was 13 times higher (37.98 per 100,000 per year compared to 2.89 per 100,000 per year, respectively). Alcohol use by adult pedestrians and drivers was strongly associated with pedestrian fatal events and was especially associated with Alaskan Native pedestrian fatalities (O.R. 8, 95% CI

Demographic analysis of childhood pedestrian injuries.

Factors in a child's living environment and socioeconomic background that contribute to the risk of pedestrian injury were studied. In 1982, in the city of Memphis, there were 210 pedestrian injuries among children aged 0 to 14 years, a rate of 138/100,000 children. The injured child was most often male, with mean age of 7.3 years; the child was usually struck while crossing the street between intersections, most commonly during the hours from 2 to 7 PM. Pedestrian injuries occurred in 81 of the 142 census tracts in the city. Compared with census tracts without reported injuries, these tracts

Coordinating Clearance and Postural Reorientation When Avoiding Physical and Virtual Pedestrians.

Community ambulation requires efficient locomotor adaptations to avoid collisions with other pedestrians. Virtual reality (VR) offers the possibility to experimentally manipulate the environment, allowing researchers to safely assess locomotor responses during pedestrian interactions. In this paper, locomotor adjustments in response to interferers approaching from different directions were examined in both a physical and a virtual environment. Further analysis compared the extent to which locomotor adjustments were influenced by different circumvention strategies. To achieve these goals, twelv

Constraints matter: Virtual pedestrians with mobility constraints affect individuals' avoidance behaviours.

Walking in urban settings requires people to negotiate crowds. In these situations, people typically want to maintain a level of personal space around themselves. Recent work on one-versus-one interactions demonstrated that whether one of the pedestrians looked distracted or interacted with an object (e.g., stroller, bike) predicted the medial-lateral separation between them as they walked past each other. However, this work did not distinguish between the type of object interaction (or mobility constraint) and thus, it is unclear whether different constraints have different effects on avoidan

Pedestrians' perceptions, fixations, and decisions towards automated vehicles with varied appearances.

Future automated vehicles (AVs) are anticipated to feature innovative exteriors, such as textual identity indications, external radars, and external human-machine interfaces (eHMIs), as evidenced by current and forthcoming on-road testing prototypes. However, given the vulnerability of pedestrians in road traffic, it remains unclear how these novel AV appearances will impact pedestrians' crossing behaviour, especially in relation to their multimodal performance, including subjective perceptions, gaze patterns, and road-crossing decisions. To address this gap, this study pioneers an investigati

E-scooter riders and pedestrians: Attitudes and interactions in five countries.

Electric scooters (e-scooters) have become a popular phenomenon internationally; however, their use has raised concerns about pedestrian safety. This study describes the possible effects of the emergence of e-scooters on pedestrians. We focus on the interaction, conflicts, crashes, and attitudes between pedestrians and e-scooter riders and pedestrians' perceived safety in the presence of e-scooters. Data were collected from e-scooter riders and non-riders (n = 3385) through an online survey in Australia, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Norway, and Sweden. Around 20-30% of e-scooter riders rode on

Safety and mobility of vulnerable road users: pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists.

Traffic safety has improved greatly over the past few decades, but the progress in the safe mobility of vulnerable road users (VRUs) - especially motorcycle riders - has not been as consistent. The changing trends towards healthier and eco-friendlier lifestyle, coupled with the rising costs of fuel have increased the exposure and injury risk of pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists, especially in urban areas. To address the safe mobility issues of VRUs, Israel's National Road Safety Authority organized an international conference on the topic. This special issue contains the papers of the
