Occurrence of diarrhea in pediatric bronchopneumonia patients: relevance to nursing management.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhea represents a frequent complication in pediatric patients with bronchopneumonia. This study was designed to identify independent risk factors for diarrheal complications and to propose evidence-informed nursing interventions. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among 280 hospitalized children with bronchopneumonia. Demographic, anthropometric, laboratory, and treatment-related data were extracted from electronic medical records. Multicollinearity was assessed by variance inflation factor (VIF), and independent risk factors were identified through binary log

Pediatric Critical Care Nursing Research Priorities in Asia: An eDelphi Study.

OBJECTIVES: To identify nursing research priorities in pediatric critical care in Asia. DESIGN: We conducted a modified three-round eDelphi survey with pediatric critical care nurses in Asia. The eDelphi technique has been extensively used within health research to achieve a common viewpoint from experts using questionnaires to gather research priorities. In round 1, participants were asked to list three to five research topics that they deemed important. These topics were thematically analyzed and categorized into a questionnaire. Participants rated the research topics in round 2 on a 6-poin

Pediatric Measles Resurgence: Implications for Acute and Critical Care Nursing Practice.

BACKGROUND: The United States declared endemic measles eliminated in 2000. However, outbreaks continued, with resurgences in 2019 and 2025. In 2025, more than 2200 cases across 48 outbreaks, the most since 1992, were reported. In the first half of 2026, 2073 cases were reported. Declining measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination rates have increased susceptibility among children. Acute and critical care nurses are central to early recognition and management of measles for optimal outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To summarize current evidence on measles epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation,

Challenges in Pediatric Fluid Management: Insights into Nursing Practices and Knowledge.

BACKGROUND: Fluid overload-a critical risk in pediatric/neonatal care-is often driven by excessive fluid during medication dilution, increasing complications like acute kidney injury(AKI), prolonged ventilation, and mortality. METHODS: A 2024 cross-sectional study across 14 pediatric units (PICUs, NICUs, surgical/general wards) evaluated fluid administration practices and nurses' knowledge. Observations included 150 patients and 200 nurses administering 8 medications. Data on fluid volumes, infusion durations, compatibility, and storage compliance were collected via checklist and questionnair

Breaking bad news by pediatric nurses: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: To map characteristics of bad news communication by nurses in pediatrics. METHOD: Scoping review according to JBI and PRISMA-ScR recommendations. Searches were conducted between March and May 2024 in six databases, one virtual library, and seven thesis/dissertation repositories, without temporal or language restrictions. Two independent/blinded reviewers performed the selection, and a third resolved disagreements. Data collection used an instrument adapted from the Cochrane Data Collection form, with descriptive synthesis and analysis according to scientific literature. RESULTS: 3

Inspire Certification Among Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurses.

Professional certification validates nurses' knowledge and expertise in their specialty. In support of professional development, nursing excellence as a Magnet® designated hospital, and commitment to improve patient outcomes, increasing the number of certified pediatric hematology oncology nurses at Children's Hospital Los Angeles is a priority. Expert certified nurses and educators assessed current staff nurse perceptions of and motivations for becoming certified. A nurse survey was completed, and the results identified barriers to certification and the need for an onsite review course to enc

Pediatric penile surgery by a nurse practitioner in the operating room.

INTRODUCTION: With the growing shortage of pediatric urological surgeons, it was our aim to streamline our system to get patients with less complex penile procedures performed in a timely manner. To do this, an advanced practice provider (APP) was trained to perform minor penile procedures in children in the operating room(OR). OBJECTIVES: The goal of our study was to show that with proper training an APP could safely perform a circumcision in the OR. STUDY DESIGN: After approval of the study center's credentialing committee, a NP was trained to perform revisions and initial circumcisions in

Nurse-driven protocols for febrile pediatric oncology patients.

INTRODUCTION: Infection is a frequent complication experienced by many children with cancer, with potentially life-threatening consequences that may result in hospitalization, prolonged length of stay, and increased mortality. The need for prompt assessment and early intervention for infection is widely recognized by ED staff as best practice; however, the average length of time to antibiotic administration varies widely in published studies. METHODS: An interdisciplinary quality improvement initiative including physician, nursing, and pharmacy leaders was created to streamline the identifica

Impact of Noise on Nurses in Pediatric Intensive Care Units.

BACKGROUND: Excessive exposure to noise places nurses at risk for safety events, near-misses, decreased job performance, and fatigue. Noise is particularly a concern in pediatric intensive care units, where highly skilled providers and vulnerable patients require a quiet environment to promote healing. OBJECTIVE: To measure noise levels and noise duration on specialty pediatric intensive care units to explore sources of noise and its effects on the health of registered nurses. METHODS: In a cross-sectional pilot study, levels and sources of noise in 3 different specialty pediatric intensive

Procedural pediatric sedation by nurses: available, competent, and safe.

Sedation and/or analgesia are standard of care for pediatric patients during painful intervention or medical imaging requiring immobility. Physician availability is frequently insufficient to allow for all procedural sedation. A nurse-led sedation program was created at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Sherbrooke (CHUS) to address this problem. Objective. To evaluate the effectiveness and the safety of our program. Methods. A retrospective study of all the procedural sedations done over one year was performed. Complications were separated in four categories: (1) major complications (cal

Understanding pediatric intestinal pseudo-obstruction: implications for nurses.

Pseudo-obstruction is actually a group of disorders resulting in bowel dysmotility in the absence of anatomic obstruction. Because of varied pathologic abnormalities of the GI tract involved in the disorder, pseudo-obstruction has been reported in the literature under different names, including hypoganglionosis, chronic adynamic ileus, pseudo-Hirschprung's disease, visceral neuropathy, visceral myopathy, and megacystis-microcolon-intestinal hypoperistalsis syndrome. Although a rare condition, its effects are severe, disabling, and life-threatening in pediatric clients. Prognosis is inversely c

CAR-T cells for pediatric malignancies: Past, present, future and nursing implications.

The treatment landscape for pediatric cancers over the last 11 years has undergone a dramatic change, especially with relapsed and refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), due to the introduction of chimeric antigen receptor-T (CAR-T) cell therapy. Because of the success of CAR-T cell therapy in patients with relapsed and refractory B-cell ALL, this promising therapy is undergoing trials in multiple other pediatric malignancies. This article will focus on the introduction of CAR-T cell therapy in pediatric B-cell ALL and discuss past and current trials. We will also discuss trials

This study aims to examine in depth how nurses working in pediatric oncology define empathy, experience it in clinical practice, and manage emotional and professional boundaries in the empathetic care process. METHODS: A qualitative research design was used. Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with 17 nurses with at least 2 years of experience in pediatric hematology-oncology units. The interviews were conducted via Zoom. Data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis, and
