Black Low-Income Mothers' Experiences With a Local Peer Support Group: A Qualitative Exploration.

Maternal empowerment, particularly by enhancing resourcefulness and support systems, has emerged as a promising approach to address inequities. The aim of this study was to explore the lived experiences of Black low-income women during the postpartum period and the interplay between cultural context, resourcefulness, and motherhood. The study employed a novel methodological approach that combined focused ethnography with grounded theory analysis. Six focus groups (n = 35) were conducted with Black mothers who had given birth within 5 years and were self-identified as low-income. Data analysis

Online peer-delivered group cognitive-behavioral therapy for postpartum depression: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) affects up to one in five mothers and birthing parents, yet just 10% receive evidence-based care. This randomized controlled trial aimed to determine if a synchronous online 9-week group cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention delivered by mothers who have recovered from postpartum depression (i.e., peers) could effectively improve PPD and its comorbidities. METHODS: Participants (n = 183) in this study lived in Ontario, Canada, were ≥18 years-old, had an infant <12 months, were fluent in English, and scored ≥10 on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depres

Us helping us: The evolution of a peer support group for formerly incarcerated people.

INTRODUCTION: Physical, psychological, and emotional trauma experienced while incarcerated influences subsequent mental health outcomes. Upon release, there is a fragmented landscape of mental health services and many of the existing services do not account for the root causes of challenges faced by formerly incarcerated people (FIP). To address the unmet social, psychological, behavioral, and emotional needs of FIP in Louisiana, the Formerly Incarcerated Peer Support (FIPS) Group developed a twelve-unit curriculum in 2019. METHODS: We detail the evolution, development, and evaluation of the

Outcomes of a group intensive peer-support model of case management for supported housing.

OBJECTIVE: Community-based intensive case management may be more intense than necessary and may be socially isolating for persons living in supported housing. This study evaluated a group intensive peer-support (GIPS) model of case management that was implemented in a supported housing program for homeless veterans with a broad range of psychiatric, substance use, and general medical problems. Group meetings led by case managers are the default mode of case management support, and individual intensive case management is provided only when clinically necessary. METHODS: GIPS was implemented by

Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Peer group similarities in adolescent hostile attribution tendencies.

A bias toward attributing hostile intent to others has been linked to aggression. In an adolescent sample, the question of whether peer group homophily exists in the tendency toward attributing hostile intent was investigated. Hostile attribution tendencies and self-reported aggressive behaviors were assessed in a normative sample of 910 adolescents and average peer group scores were computed on the basis of nominated friend scores. Results indicated that adolescents showed significant correlations between their own level of hostile attributions and that of their peer group. Further analyses i

Condom use increased after a peer group intervention implemented by community volunteers in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: HIV prevention remains a global priority, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Our research team previously developed an evidence-based peer group program for HIV prevention called Mzake ndi Mzake (Friend to Friend). A community-engaged collaboration adapted the program for community ownership and implementation. Here we report whether this HIV prevention program, implemented by community volunteers, increased condom use among sexually active individuals in rural Malawi. METHODS: Three communities sequentially rolled out the program. Effectiveness was evaluated using a stepped wedge

Assessment of a Peer Support Group Intervention for Undocumented Latinx Immigrants With Kidney Failure.

IMPORTANCE: Most undocumented immigrants with kidney failure rely on emergency dialysis (defined as dialysis after a patient presents as critically ill) and experience significant depression and anxiety and high mortality. Culturally and language-concordant peer support group interventions may be associated with reduced depression and anxiety and may provide emotional support. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility and acceptability of a single-group peer support group intervention. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This qualitative and single-group prospective study for undocumented imm

The significance of participation in peer support groups for people with rheumatoid arthritis: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines how rheumatoid arthritis (RA) peer support groups affect patients' lives and identifies the roles of these groups. METHODS: Twelve RA patients from a peer support group participated in a focus group interview discussing reasons for joining, emotional changes, and disease management. Data were analysed using qualitative methods. RESULTS: The analysis identified 65 codes, organized into 22 subcategories and synthesized into five pre- and five post-membership experience categories. The five pre-membership categories were: prolonged time for diagnosis, persistent

Personality and peer groups in adolescence: Reciprocal associations and shared genetic and environmental influences.

OBJECTIVE: Peer groups represent a critical developmental context in adolescence, and there are many well-documented associations between personality and peer behavior at this age. However, the precise nature and direction of these associations are difficult to determine as youth both select into, and are influenced by, their peers. METHOD: We thus examined the phenotypic, genetic, and environmental links between antisocial and prosocial peer characteristics and several personality traits from middle childhood to late adolescence (ages 11, 14, and 17 years) in a longitudinal twin sample (N =

Social-information-processing factors in reactive and proactive aggression in children's peer groups.

We examined social-information-processing mechanisms (e.g., hostile attributional biases and intention-cue detection deficits) in chronic reactive and proactive aggressive behavior in children's peer groups. In Study 1, a teacher-rating instrument was developed to assess these behaviors in elementary school children (N = 259). Reactive and proactive scales were found to be internally consistent, and factor analyses partially supported convergent and discriminant validities. In Study 2, behavioral correlates of these forms of aggression were examined through assessments by peers (N = 339). Both

The use of peer support groups for emergency physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: To test the feasibility, receptivity, and preliminary effectiveness of peer support groups for emergency medicine physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic and gain a better understanding of their experiences with peer support. METHODS: This pilot study used a quasi-experimental design to assess change in symptoms of distress, anxiety, depression and burn-out before and after participating in a virtual, group-based peer support intervention for a duration of 8 weeks. Pre-post change analyses were performed using two-sided, paired t tests. Feasibility was measured by attendance data t

Tinnitus groups: A model of social support and social connectedness from peer interaction.

UNLABELLED: Tinnitus is a chronic condition for which there is no medical treatment. Tinnitus groups are a widely available resource for people with tinnitus. OBJECTIVES: Our objectives were to explore the active ingredients of tinnitus support groups in terms of their mechanisms for providing support, the contextual factors that elicit such mechanisms, and the outcomes in terms of coping enhancement. DESIGN: We adopted a pluralist and iterative approach informed by the realist evaluation method. METHODS: We conducted ethnographic data generation at tinnitus support groups involving observa

Impact of peer-led group education on the quality of life in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of peer-led group education on the quality of life and depression in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). METHODS: Eighty patients with definite AS were allocated randomly to either the education or control group. The education group (n = 40) was subjected to a peer-led group education program about disease and was given an educational booklet, while the control group (n = 40) was given the educational booklet only. Levels of quality of life and depression were measured at baseline, immediately after education (fourth week) and at 6 months in both gro

The effect of peer support groups on self-care for haemophilic patients with HIV in Japan.

Experienced peer support groups (EPSG) are expected to improve self-care and complement professional health care for haemophilic patients, even those living in inconvenient clinical setting. However, these benefits have not been verified quantitatively. The structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to evaluate the effects of contact with EPSG on self-care for haemophilic patients in the Japanese clinical settings. Factors affecting self-care were compared between groups with and without EPSG contact. Self-reported questionnaires were mailed to 652 haemophilic patients with HIV in Japan (Sep

Students with reading and spelling disabilities: peer groups and educational attainment in secondary education.

The present study investigated whether the members of adolescents' peer groups are similar in reading and spelling disabilities and whether this similarity contributes to subsequent school achievement and educational attainment. The sample consisted of 375 Finnish adolescents whose reading and spelling disabilities were assessed at age 16 with the Finnish dyslexia screening test. The students also completed a sociometric nomination measure that was used to identify their peer groups. Register information on participants' school grades also was available, and educational attainment in secondary

Similarity of sun protection attitudes and behaviours within north Queensland peer groups.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: The study investigates whether the perceived sun protective practices of the peer group during a day-time recreational boat trip were associated with the sun protective attitudes and behaviours of individuals on the same boat. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of recreational boat users conducted in Townsville, North Queensland, during the summer of 2003. One hundred and twenty-four of 134 boat users returning from a day trip agreed to participate, with 10 later excluded from analysis due to either being the sole person on the boat or because they were in the sun for less than

Young children's play qualities in same-, other-, and mixed-sex peer groups.

This research examined how children's play varied as a function of the sex of the child, the sex of the play partner, and whether they played in dyads or groups. Children (mean age = 52 months) were observed during their free play. Data revealed that boys' same-sex play was more active-forceful, further from adults, and more stereotyped than girls' play, and that this pattern was generally exaggerated in groups versus dyads. Children rarely played only with children of the other sex (other-sex peers), but about one fourth of their interactions involved children of both sexes (mixed-sex peers).

The role of aggression in peer relations: an analysis of aggression episodes in boys' play groups.

Although aggression is frequently cited as a major cause of peer social rejection, no more than half of all aggressive children are rejected. Aggressive episode data from experimental play groups of 7- and 9-year-old black males were coded to examine whether qualitative aspects of aggressive behavior, as well as frequency of aggression, determine the relation between aggressiveness and peer rejection. Reactive aggression and bullying were related to peer status among 9-year-olds, but not 7-year-olds, whereas instrumental aggression was characteristic of highly aggressive, rejected boys at both

Longitudinal Sigma-Metric Profiling of Two Clinical Chemistry Platforms Using Peer-Group Internal Quality Control.

Background: The Six Sigma metric benchmarks analytical performance, but most reports assess one platform at one time point, merging trueness with imprecision. Using routine peer-group internal quality control (IQC), we profiled two clinical chemistry platforms over five months. Because peer-group IQC compares imprecision directly but positions trueness only against same-method peers, we characterise rather than rank cross-platform trueness. Methods: Bio-Rad Unity peer-group IQC (January-May 2026) spanned two Siemens Dimension EXL analysers and two Roche cobas pro channels, two QC levels, and 3

Do time in child care and peer group exposure predict poor socioemotional adjustment in Norway?

Extensive exposure to nonparental child care during the first 4.5 years of life has been demonstrated in some American studies to negatively affect children's socioemotional functioning. Data from 935 preschool children who averaged 54.9 (SD = 3.0) months of age, from Trondheim, Norway were used to examine whether such negative effects, would emerge in Norway, a country with a different child-care system. The children's externalizing problems and social competence were unrelated to their child-care experience. More time spent in child care during the first 4.5 years of life and experiencing pe
