Extrinsic relative to intrinsic goal pursuits and peer dynamics: selection and influence processes among adolescents.

Self-Determination Theory discerns goals and values in terms of whether they are intrinsic or extrinsic in nature. Although research substantiates the importance of goal preferences for a host of outcomes, few studies examined how such preferences develop, and studies that did pay attention to this focused on parental influence processes. The present study focuses on the role of peers. Social network analyses on longitudinal data gathered among senior high-school students (N = 695) confirm that peer similarity in goal pursuit exists, and that, although this similarity partly originates from ad

Influence of perceived peer behavior on engagement in self-damaging behaviors during the transition to university.

As students transition to university, they experience significant social changes that can affect their behaviors, including self-damaging behaviors like disordered eating, problematic alcohol/drug use, suicidal thoughts, and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Building on prior work, we examined the associations between (1) perceptions of peers' engagement in self-damaging behaviors predicting one's own subsequent engagement in such behaviors (i.e., socialization) and (2) one's own engagement in self-damaging behaviors predicting perceptions of peers' subsequent engagement in such behaviors (i.e.

Peer Influence on IPV by Young Adult Males: Investigating the Case for a Social Norms Approach.

Nearly 32% of women report experiencing physical violence from an intimate partner and more than 8% report being raped by a significant other in their lifetime. Young people's perceptions that their peers perpetrate relationship violence have been shown to increase the odds of self-reported perpetration. Yet, limited research has been conducted on this relationship as individuals begin to age out of adolescence. The present study sought to examine the link between the perception of peer perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV) and self-reported IPV perpetration among a sample of predomi

The contribution of genetic and environmental influences underlying disordered eating to exposure to weight-conscious peers.

BACKGROUND: Girls with predispositions for disordered eating (DE) may select into weight-conscious peer groups (i.e. peer groups that emphasize body weight/shape). However, factors driving selection into these peer groups remain unknown, as genetic and/or environmental predisposition to DE may lead girls to select weight-conscious peers. To explore what may drive selection, the present study investigated whether genetic or shared environmental influences underlie associations between DE and exposure to weight-conscious peers and whether effects differ by pubertal status. METHODS: Participants

Influence of peer discussions on trust in recommendations for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV.

BACKGROUND: Mothers attending prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV clinics seem to lack knowledge on many aspects of PMTCT, among which is breastfeeding. Breastfeeding recommendations in PMTCT have changed several times over the years leaving some confused and doubtful of what is currently recommended. One method shown to help improve their knowledge and acceptance of PMTCT recommendations is the use of peer educators. We sought to determine if mothers engage in discussions with other mothers during clinics and how these engagements influence trust in PMTCT recommendations

The intent of students to vaccinate is influenced by cultural factors, peer network, and knowledge about vaccines.

Young adults are the future vaccine decision-makers as parents or health-care professionals. To understand their attitudes and behaviors toward vaccination, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of 2079 students attending the University of Antwerp, Belgium and the University of Pisa, Italy. Principal component analysis was used to investigate associations between survey responses and the intent to vaccinate. Vaccination knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors among university students in Italy and Belgium were high. However, only one-half of respondents displayed an intent to vaccinate. High level

Influence of peer context on the relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating pathology in women and men.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the influence of peer context on the relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating pathology in women and men. METHOD: Secondary analyses were conducted using survey data from a large community sample of women and men (N = 2,060). RESULTS: The frequency of friend comments on weight and diet moderated the relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating pathology such that more frequent comments strengthened the relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating pathology in women. This effect was not significant in analyses of men. Instead, friend

Dual Peer Processes in Adolescent Smoking Initiation and Frequency: Close-Friend Modeling and Anti-Smoking Influence.

Peers' attitudes and behaviors are among the most robust determinants of adolescents' smoking behaviors. Although researchers have largely examined the negative role peer influence plays, this study examined how the larger peer group can play a prosocial role in advocating for reductions in smoking, even after accounting for the behavioral modeling of adolescents' closest friends. This study examined how closest friends' actual smoking behavior and perceived peer influence to reduce smoking were associated with adolescents' smoking initiation and frequency from ages 13 - 17. Data were collecte

Understanding Social Influence of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: The Interplay of Peer Networks and Adolescent Behavior.

Adolescents' non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) could be influenced by their friends' NSSI and by their own social position within peer networks. However, prior research has examined these effects separately and has primarily focused on middle-to-late adolescence. It remains unclear how friends' NSSI relates to adolescents' NSSI under different social positions and how these effects differ across different age stages. This study examined both the independent and interactive effects of the number of friends engaging in NSSI, the number of claiming friends, and the extent of bridging different peer

HPV vaccine: Influencing peer recommendations through information provision at no-cost vaccine clinics.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection among people ages 15-24 years in the U.S. However, many individuals remain unvaccinated against HPV. Recommendations from friends and family have been shown to improve vaccine uptake and should be encouraged. This study aimed to determine if the provision of vaccine-related information would change the likelihood of recommending the HPV vaccine to their peers. Furthermore, we examined characteristics associated with a positive change. Participants were recruited at two no-cost vaccine clinics on a university campus in

My friends made me do it: Peer influences and different types of vaping in adolescence.

Vaping is one of the most common forms of substance use among adolescents. Social influences play a key role in the decision to use substances and frequency of use during adolescence, and vaping is no exception. Using a sample of 891 adolescents across two time points (Mage = 15.1 and Mage = 17.2) in this pre-registered study, we explored whether the frequency of vaping nicotine and the frequency of vaping marijuana at age 17 were related to concurrent reports of resistance to peer influence (RPI), perceptions of friends vaping, and perceptions of classmates vaping. Then, we investigated wheth

The influence of peer's social networks on adolescent's cannabis use: a systematic review of longitudinal studies.

AIM: A systematic review was performed to summarize the key findings of the peer influence on cannabis use through Social Network Analysis (SNA) studies and identify limitations and gaps with the purpose of informing future research and practice. Longitudinal studies were included since they provide robust information about social relationships change over time. BACKGROUND: Adolescents' cannabis use is a global problem, which has awakened an interest in its determinants such as social influences. Research has shown the importance of these influences on cannabis uptake and use. SNA is an usefu

Trajectories of depressive symptoms from adolescence to emerging adulthood: The influence of parents, peers, and siblings.

The primary purpose of this study was to examine whether social relationship factors are associated with trajectories of depressive symptoms from adolescence into emerging adulthood. Specifically, adolescent-parent communication with mothers and fathers, peer support, and sibling warmth and hostility were examined in relation to depressive symptoms for girls and boys. Adolescents (N = 372; Mage = 16.09; SD = .69; 55% female) from the Mid-Atlantic United States completed surveys in the spring of 2007, 2008, and 2009 and again in the fall of 2014 when they were emerging adults. Peer influences on internalizing and externalizing problems among adolescents: a longitudinal social network analysis.

Adolescents who like each other may become more similar to each other with regard to internalizing and externalizing problems, though it is not yet clear which social mechanisms explain these similarities. In this longitudinal study, we analyzed four mechanisms that may explain similarity in adolescent peer networks with regard to externalizing and internalizing problems: selection, socialization, avoidance and withdrawal. At three moments during one school-year, we asked 542 adolescents (8th grade, M-age = 13.3 years, 51 % female) to report who they liked in their classroom, and their own int

An immersive virtual peer for studying social influences on child cyclists' road-crossing behavior.

The goal of our work is to develop a programmatically controlled peer to bicycle with a human subject for the purpose of studying how social interactions influence road-crossing behavior. The peer is controlled through a combination of reactive controllers that determine the gross motion of the virtual bicycle, action-based controllers that animate the virtual bicyclist and generate verbal behaviors, and a keyboard interface that allows an experimenter to initiate the virtual bicyclist's actions during the course of an experiment. The virtual bicyclist's repertoire of behaviors includes road f

Susceptibility to peer influence as a value-neutral phenomenon: Preliminary validation of a novel self-report measure.

Although the link between adolescent susceptibility to peer influence and delinquent behavior is often assumed, virtually all research using self-report measures of susceptibility has confounded susceptibility with propensity to engage in risky behavior. Thus, we introduce a value-neutral (i.e., free from references to risky behavior) measure of susceptibility to peer influence: the Susceptibility to Peer Influence Scale (SPIS). The SPIS was preliminarily validated via confirmatory factor analysis and convergently validated via bivariate correlations with perceived pressure toward both risky a
