[When are young people awarded disability pensions for sociomedical indications? A study from the municipality of Copenhagen].

Since 1984 it has been possible in Denmark to receive disability pensions for combined social and health reasons. About 500 people under the age of 45 have been pensioned in this way every year in the municipality of Copenhagen. The records of 476 persons awarded pensions in 1989 were examined with the purpose of describing their social history and health and social status at the time of pensioning. There were more men (62%) than women (38%). One hundred and nine pensioners were under 35 years of age. Forty-one percent of the pensioners grew up in broken families, and 38% lived apart from thei

Adverse perinatal conditions and receiving a disability pension early in life.

OBJECTIVE: The number of young adults on disability pension (DP) is increasing in European countries, creating a need to understand the related risk factors. This study aimed to determine whether adverse perinatal conditions are associated with receiving a DP early in life. METHODS: This longitudinal cohort study consisted of all persons (N = 453,223) born in Sweden during 1973-1977, observed from 1991 through 2010 when they were aged between 16 and 37 years. Statistics Sweden provided linked national data on the children and their parents. We used logistic regression to assess the associatio

Sick Leave and Disability Pension in Prevalent Patients With Crohn's Disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Crohn's disease may affect the ability to work and lead to permanent disability. We aimed to investigate work loss in prevalent patients. METHODS: We identified patients with Crohn's disease and general population comparators matched by sex, birth year, healthcare region and education. We assessed days of sick leave and disability pension retrieved from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency and estimated the absolute and relative risk of receiving disability pension [minimum 25% work impairment]. RESULTS: In 2014, the 20638 Crohn's disease patients [median age 44 years] ha

Hearing loss and the risk of disability pension in Norway: the Hunt Study.

AIM: The purpose was to explore the possible associations between measured hearing thresholds and work related disability pension granted for other medical reasons in a Norwegian population. METHOD: This study included 25,537 persons from the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT) aged 20-54 years at baseline in HUNT1 (1984-1986) who also participated in the follow-up study 11 years later, HUNT2 (1995-1997) that included a hearing examination. Logistic regression analyses of disability pension granted up to 1996 or earlier in life were conducted for men and women separately and in two age strata.

Predictors of working days lost due to sickness absence and disability pension.

OBJECTIVE: To identify social and health-related predictors of the number of days lost due to sickness absence (SA) and disability pension (DP) among initially 55-year-old public-sector workers. METHODS: The data from the Finnish Helsinki Health Study included participants aged 55 years at the baseline (in 2000-2002, N = 1630, 81% women), and were enriched with register-based information on SA and DP. The cumulative number of calendar days lost due to SA ≥ 1 day or DP between ages 55 and 65 was calculated. Negative binomial regression model was used to identify the predictors of days lost. R

Occupational burnout as a predictor of disability pension: a population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate whether burnout predicts new disability pension at population level during a follow-up of approximately 4 years. The diagnosis for which the disability pension was granted was also examined in relation to the level of burnout. METHODS: We used a population-based cohort sample (n = 3125) of 30-60-year-old employees from an epidemiological health study, the Health 2000 Study, gathered during 2000-2001 in Finland. The data collection comprised an interview, a clinical health examination including a standardised mental health interview, and a q

Evolution of disability in late 19th century America: Civil War pensions for Union Army veterans with musculoskeletal conditions.

This article examines the evolution of musculoskeletal (MSK) disability and its impact on mortality and work patterns in the late 19th century in America, in the context of the Civil War disability policy scheme. The study was conducted on 17,702 Union Army (UA) Civil War veterans. Of these, 10,789 were examined and diagnosed with major MSK conditions, rheumatism, sciatica, and spinal curvature, between 1862 and 1907. Analyses examine MSK (i) prevalence rates by birth cohort and age group; (ii) fatality rates as compared with other disabilities; (iii) risk rates by occupation type; and (iv) li

Employment and disability pension after central nervous system infections in adults.

In this nationwide population-based cohort study using national Danish registries, in the period 1980-2008, our aim was to study employment and receipt of disability pension after central nervous system infections. All patients diagnosed between 20 and 55 years of age with meningococcal (n = 451), pneumococcal (n = 553), or viral (n = 1,433) meningitis or with herpes simplex encephalitis (n = 115), who were alive 1 year after diagnosis, were identified. Comparison cohorts were drawn from the general population, and their members were individually matched on age and sex to patients. Five years

[Prevention as a pension insurance task: innovative models complementing proven concepts].

Health-related strategies aimed at ensuring long-term participation in working life are gaining increasing importance against a background of longer working lives and demographic change. Medical and vocational rehabilitation under the German statutory pension insurance scheme are among these strategies. For a long time already, preventive concepts have been taken into account in rehabilitation so that the pension insurance's prevention approach is mainly based on the experience gained with preventive-modules in rehabilitation and follow-up care. Having so far only been able to offer in-patient

Pensions and Low Sodium Salt: A Qualitative Evaluation of a New Strategy for Managing Hypertension in Rural South Africa.

BACKGROUND: This paper describes a pilot study to assess the feasibility of a novel intervention to improve the management of hypertension among older people in rural South Africa. Older South Africans have the highest rates of uncontrolled hypertension recorded for any country. Notably, South Africa has a widely-available old age grant (pension), which is delivered on a monthly basis to citizens living in rural villages. METHODS: We assessed the feasibility of engaging with older people at the point of pension delivery in the Agincourt sub-district of Mpumalanga Province. This included provi

International vision requirements for driver licensing and disability pensions: using a milestone approach in characterization of progressive eye disease.

OBJECTIVE: Low vision that causes forfeiture of driver's licenses and collection of disability pension benefits can lead to negative psychosocial and economic consequences. The purpose of this study was to review the requirements for holding a driver's license and rules for obtaining a disability pension due to low vision. Results highlight the possibility of using a milestone approach to describe progressive eye disease. METHODS: Government and research reports, websites, and journal articles were evaluated to review rules and requirements in Germany, Spain, Italy, France, the UK, and the US

Sick leave and disability pension following delivery in women with systemic lupus erythematosus.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate sickness benefits following delivery in mothers with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and mothers without SLE. METHOD: SLE and non-SLE mothers, matched by age and month of delivery, with a singleton liveborn (2004-2008), were identified from the Swedish Lupus Linkage cohort. Work loss (sum of sick leave and disability pension) was studied from 1 year prenatally to 3 years postpartum. Adjusted logistic regression models of covariates associated with > 30 days of work loss in the first and second years postpartum were estimated in SLE mothers. RESULTS: Among 130 SLE

Mental Health and Disability Pension Onset: Changes in Consumption of Antianxiety and Hypnotic Drugs.

INTRODUCTION: In Norway, disability pension (DP) has been more prevalent over the later years, with mental disorders being a frequent cause. Previous analyses have questioned whether receiving DP is beneficial for mental health by considering changes in antidepressant drug consumption. To explore this further, we examined changes in antianxiety and hypnotic drug consumption following DP onset. METHODS: Based on national Norwegian register data, this retrospective study encompassed 8617 working-age individuals (25-50 years) who became DP during 2005 to 2013. We compared their benzodiazepines (

[Persistent back pain, working situation and disability pension after lumbago surgery].

373 patients who underwent lumbar disc surgery at our department were submitted to a follow-up after 2-17 years. The aim of our study was to find quality indicators: absence of complications, postoperative status including work capacity, and patient satisfaction Questionnaires were returned by 95% of the patients and showed that 58% had a persistent but usually light back problem. 23% had changed to less strenuous work and 13% had qualified for a permanent disability pension. These two groups had significantly higher rates of recurrences and reoperations and were significantly less satisfied.

A prospective twin cohort study of disability pensions due to musculoskeletal diagnoses in relation to stability and change in pain.

Pain is known to play an important role in the pathway to becoming work disabled, in particular for award of disability pensions (DP) due to musculoskeletal diagnoses (MSD). This prospective cohort study investigated MSD-related pain stability and/or changes as predictors for DP during a 23-year follow-up. Additionally confounding factors were examined to elucidate whether familial effects (including genetics and family background) or socioeconomic status, other pain, or use of medication would affect the associations between pain and DP. Data were available on 11,224 twins (4399 complete pair

[Conception and evaluation of a group therapy intervention for patients with chronic pain disorders and applications for early retirement pensions].

OBJECTIVE: Patients with chronic pain disorder are generally thought to be difficult to treat in psychosomatic rehabilitation. On average, their disorders tend to take a more chronic course than those of other patients, and they develop a higher rate of additional socio-medical problems, all of which increase the probability of therapy failure. Most of the time, such failures are attributed solely to the desire for early retirement and disability pensions, that is, a characteristic of the patient. However, a lack of specific therapeutic offers for patients with predominant psycho-social proble
