This study investigated the extent of impairment in functional parameters of liver mitochondria from rats treated for 60 days with hexachlorobenzene (HCB). A constant amount of mitochondrial uncoupling was found throughout the treatment period. At the same time a nearly constant amount of pentachlorophenol was detected in these mitochondria. In contrast, the level of mitochondrial porphyrins increased progressively. There was good correlation between the concentration of mitochondrial pentachlorophenol and the degree of uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation.

The microsomal metabolism of pentachlorophenol (PCP) was investigated, with special attention to the conversion dependent covalent binding to protein and DNA. The two metabolites detected were tetrachloro-1,2- and tetrachloro-1,4-hydroquinone. Microsomes from isosafrole (ISF)-induced rats were by far the most effective in catalyzing the reaction: the rate of conversion was increased 7-fold over control microsomes. All other inducers tested (hexachlorobenzene (HCB), phenobarbital (PB) and 3-methylcholanthrene (3MC) gave 2--3-fold increases over control. There are indications that the 1,2- and 1

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) (C(6)HCl(5)O) is a synthetic toxic organochloride fungicide for humans which exhibit neurotoxic properties. In the present research, we describe the potential pathways implicated in PCP-induced apoptosis in an acute model of toxicity in rat cerebellar granule neurons (CGNs). In our experiments, acute exposure of CGNs to micromolar concentrations of PCP induced the transcriptional activity of genes related to the classical apoptosis pathway (caspase 3, caspase 8, Bad), oxidative stress and glutathione metabolism (glutathione peroxidase-1, catalase, glutathione-S-transfer

OBJECTIVE: Pentachlorophenol, a fungicide widely used as a wood preservative, was classified in 1999 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a possible human carcinogen. We reviewed currently available data to determine the extent to which recent studies assist in distinguishing the effect of pentachlorophenol from that of its contaminants (e.g., dioxins and other chlorophenols).
DATA SOURCES AND EXTRACTION: We performed a systematic review of published studies pertaining to cancer risk in relation to pentachlorophenol exposure, focusing on results pertaining specifically to all

Pentachlorophenol (PCP), an organochlorine fungicide, is extensively used in the United States for the protection of wood products. Moreover, widespread agricultural, domestic, and industrial applications have caused PCP-contaminants to enter the food chain from the environment. There is accumulating evidence indicating that PCP is highly toxic to humans, and causes injury to major organs including the lung, liver, kidneys, heart, and brain. While PCP has been shown to induce systemic toxicity and carcinogenesis in several experimental studies, the literature is scarce regarding its toxic mech

Pentachlorophenol (PCP), a widely used biocide, induces liver tumors in mice but not in rats. Metabolic activation of PCP to chlorinated quinones and semiquinones in liver cytosol from Sprague-Dawley rats and B6C3F1 mice was investigated in vitro (1) with microsomes in the presence of either beta-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) or cumene hydroperoxide (CHP), (2) with CHP in the absence of microsomes, and (3) with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and H2O2. Mono-S- and multi-S-substituted adducts of tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (Cl4-1,4-BQ) and Cl4-1,2-BQ and their corresponding

A bacterial strain capable of utilizing pentachlorophenol (PCP) as sole source of carbon and energy for growth was isolated from enrichment cultures containing 100 mg/l PCP in a mineral salts medium inoculated with contaminated soil from a lumber treatment waste site. The isolate, designated strain SR3, was identified as a species of Pseudomonas by virtue of its physiological and biochemical characteristics. Mineralization of PCP by Pseudomonas sp. strain SR3 was demonstrated by loss of detectable PCP from growth medium, stoichiometry of chloride release (5 equivalents of chloride per mole of

Pentachlorophenol is a very toxic chemical that is used as a pesticide, fungicide, herbicide, wood preservative, etc., and it should be monitored in terms of human health and environmental production. Another environmental problem is the increase in the use of facemasks, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study provides a value added chemicals to sustainability of recycling process. Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized from waste facemasks and investigated their fluorescence sensor performances. UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra of the synthesized carbon dots were recorded i

UNLABELLED: Microwave (MW) is applied to enhance perchloroethylene (PCE) or pentachlorophenol (PCP) removal using zero-valent iron (ZVI; Fe(0)) as the dielectric medium. ZVI has a much higher dielectric loss factor (39.5) than other media; it is capable of absorbing MW radiation rapidly to speed up the release of electrons, leading to rises of the ZVI particle surface temperature. If the MW power is continued, excessive electricity will accumulated inside ZVI particles, resulting in sparks. The results show that during the initial 5 sec (700 W), the linear aliphatic PCE has a faster decomposin

The re-emergence of schistosomiasis has given rise to ubiquitous concentrations of the primary control agent pentachlorophenol (PCP) in the environment, especially in the surface waters of China. In this study, the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of PCP, namely, 0.0002, 0.002, 0.02, 0.2, and 2 μmol/L on survival, age at first reproduction, fecundity, length of mothers, and number of molts of Daphnia magna were studied over three generations. The survival of D. magna exposed to 2 μmol/L was significantly affected in the three generations. Toxic effects were enhanced in later

"Sick building syndrome" (SBS) is a group of symptoms experienced by people working in various buildings. This or another term "building-related illness" (BRI) is used to define illnesses related to modern buildings, mainly offices, in which people spend many working hours. SBS applies to a group of diseases with a fairly homogenous clinical picture and etiology (specific - infectious, allergic and non-specific--for example irritant symptoms). A case of a 51-year-old non-smoking female office worker is reported. After having her working premise renovated, she started to suffer from irritation

The effects of lindane (LIN, gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) on reproduction and general endocrine function were examined in breeding ewes as a model for wild and domestic ungulates, which may be exposed to low levels of pesticides that are potential endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Ewes (n = 13/group) were fed either a control untreated diet (CON), or a diet treated with LIN (1 mg/kg/d) or PCP (1 mg/kg/d) during the 5 wk prior to mating and throughout pregnancy and lactation. Mating response, ovulation rate, follicle and corpus luteum size, gestation length, pregnancy

In the present study the effects of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and the metabolite pentachlorophenol (PCP) were investigated with respect to uptake of thyroxine (T4) into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain structures of rats. [125I]T4 was taken up into CSF of control rats by a relatively slow process, reaching a steady state after about 3 h. Both repeated dosing of HCB and single doses of PCP caused decreased uptake of [125I]T4 into CSF, total brain tissue as well as specific brain structures, such as occipital cortex, thalamus, and hippocampus. Although HCB-treatment caused a build-up of HCB and

Psychosine (galactosylsphingosine) potently inhibits cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity and hemolyzes washed erythrocytes in vitro. However, no hemolytic anemia is seen in patients with Krabbe disease or its animal models in which a psychosine-degrading enzyme is missing. This "discrepancy" may be caused by albumin because, 1) albumin is synthesized only in liver and it does not enter cells once it is released into the blood stream; 2) albumin can bind psychosine and suppress its effects effectively; 3) psychosine cannot exert its toxicity in the blood, should it be present there. On the othe

The toxicity of phenol (P), pentachlorophenol (PCP), and dinitrophenol (DNP) was determined separately and in different combinations with a test fish, Notopterus notopterus, using the procedure of Schubert et al. (1978) that provided a simple, sensitive, and quantitative index of synergism, antagonism and additivity. The combination (P + DNP)/PCP was found to be the most synergistic, while (PCP + DNP)/P was antagonistic in nature. The (DNP + P)/PCP combination was additive in its effect. The other combinations were also synergistic, but to a lesser extent than the (P + DNP)/PCP combination.

Through various routes humans are constantly exposed to polyhalogenated compounds which are ubiquitous in the environment. Evidence of their harmful environmental and toxic properties led to many of them being classified and regulated as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under the Stockholm Convention. The analysis of human serum samples enables the assessment of human exposure to these compounds. However, such biomonitoring should not only cover POPs but also halogenated natural products (HNPs) which have very similar structures, and can also be present in humans. The marine environment of
