OBJECTIVE: Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) is prevalent, burdensome, and associated with an increased risk for opioid use disorder. Evidence suggests that perceived racial/ethnic discrimination is associated with problematic substance use among Black individuals, but studies have not focused on problematic opioid use among Black individuals with CMP specifically or explored the contribution of perceived discrimination, pain intensity, and pain-relevant psychological factors to this association.
METHOD: We recruited 401 Black individuals (Mage = 35.98, 51.9% female) with self-reported CMP a

Parental discriminatory experiences can have significant implications for adolescent adjustment. This study examined family processes linking parental perceived discrimination to adolescent depressive symptoms and delinquent behaviors by using the family stress model and incorporating family systems theory. Participants were 444 Chinese American adolescents (Mage.wave1 = 13.03) and their parents residing in Northern California. Testing of actor-partner interdependent models showed a significant indirect effect from earlier paternal (but not maternal) perceived discrimination to later adolesce

Perceived discrimination is a potential cause of racial and ethnic disparities in health. Disturbed sleep may serve as a mechanism linking perceived racism with health consequences. This study investigates data from 7,148 adults from Michigan and Wisconsin who participated in the 2006 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Hierarchical logistic regression analyses explored associations between perceived racial discrimination and self-reported sleep disturbance and daytime fatigue. Sleep disturbance and daytime fatigue were reported in 19% and 21% of the sample, respectively. Black/African

BACKGROUND: This study examines exposure to perceived discrimination and its association with depression among low-income, Latina male-to-female transgender women as well as evaluates the impact of sexual partner violence and mistreatment on depression.
METHODS: A total of 220 Latina male-to-female transgender women who resided in Los Angeles, California, were recruited through community based organizations and referrals. Participants completed individual interviews using a structured questionnaire. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Perceived di

Research suggests that perceived ethnic discrimination is associated with poor psychological and physiological health. Rumination, or perseverative thoughts about negative experiences, may constitute a maladaptive coping strategy that mediates the associations between perceived discrimination, emotional distress, and aggression. Our sample consisted of 170 ethnic minority and 134 White American participants. For ethnic minority participants, we found a pattern of correlations consistent with rumination partially mediating a causal link between perceived discrimination and depressive symptoms,

OBJECTIVE: The study sought to better understand why some people with mental illness self-stigmatize and develop low self-esteem while others remain indifferent to stigma or respond with a sense of empowerment. The authors hypothesized that a high level of perceived discrimination, little sense of identification with the group of people with mental illness, and a high level of perceived legitimacy of discrimination lead to self-stigma.
METHODS: Sixty women with borderline personality disorder and 30 women with social phobia, who were recruited at three centers in Germany and Switzerland, comp

People living with HIV or AIDS (PLWHA) experienced severe medical discrimination which is seriously affecting their lives. However, few studies examined the epidemic characteristics of self-perceived medical discrimination from the discrimination objects such as PLWHA. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the epidemiological status and analyze the influential factors of the self-perceived medical discrimination on PLWHA in South China. The self-designed questionnaire was used to investigate the medical discrimination status of the 443 infected persons, who were randomly recruited from the repres

Methodological impediments have presented challenges in identifying which individuals are at the highest risk of experiencing discrimination and its detrimental corollaries. In the current study, we examined whether adolescents' number of perceived reasons for everyday discriminations (i.e., number of identities and/or characteristics adolescents identify as the reasons(s) they are discriminated against) is associated with frequency of perceived everyday discriminations (PED) and depressive symptoms. Further, we evaluated indirect associations between number of perceived reasons for PEDs and d

The present study aimed (1) to assess the validity and reliability of the Borg category-ratio (CR-10) scale for monitoring exercise intensity in women with fibromyalgia (FM) and (2) to examine whether women with FM can discriminate between perceived exertion and exercise-induced pain. Thirty-three women with FM performed two incremental treadmill tests (1 week separated). Heart rate, oxygen uptake, minute ventilation and respiratory quotient were measured. The ratings of perceived exertion (RPE: CR-10 scale) and exercise-induced pain were obtained at each workload. The Spearman's correlation o

OBJECTIVES: We sought to describe the prevalence, characteristics, and mental health problems of children who experience perceived racial/ethnic discrimination.
METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from a study of 5147 fifth-grade students and their parents from public schools in 3 US metropolitan areas. We used multivariate logistic regression (overall and stratified by race/ethnicity) to examine the associations of sociodemographic factors and mental health problems with perceived racial/ethnic discrimination.
RESULTS: Fifteen percent of children reported perceived racial/ethnic discr

The authors evaluated emotional distress among 9th-12th grade students, and examined whether the association between being lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgendered (i.e., "LGBT") and emotional distress was mediated by perceptions of having been treated badly or discriminated against because others thought they were gay or lesbian. Data come from a school-based survey in Boston, Massachusetts (n = 1,032); 10% were LGBT, 58% were female, and ages ranged from 13 to 19 years. About 45% were Black, 31% were Hispanic, and 14% were White. LGBT youth scored significantly higher on the scale of dep

Twenty chronic low back pain patients (CBP), twenty tension headache (THA) patients, and twenty healthy controls (HC) participated in a tension production task where subjects had to attain four levels (4, 8, 12, 16 microV) of muscle tension at the m. frontalis and the m. erector spinae. Ratings of perceived tension, pain, and aversiveness as well as EMG, heart rate, and skin conductance levels were recorded. Signal detection and correlational methods revealed that the patients were deficient in muscle tension discrimination at high tension levels in both muscles. They generally overestimated l

IMPORTANCE: Some US populations experience perceived discrimination in health care settings (PDHS) that may lead to delaying health care and worse health outcomes. It is crucial to understand potential mechanisms, such as patient-clinician communication (PCC), that may reduce these disparities.
OBJECTIVE: To examine PCC as a mediating pathway between PDHS and health care delays due to nervousness about seeing a health care professional while considering the moderating roles of age and race and ethnicity.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of racism or racial discrimination on obstetric outcomes.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Systematic review conducted at a tertiary/academic hospital.
METHODS: The Cochrane Library, SCOPUS/EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science and ClinicalTrials.gov databases were searched from inception to June 2020. Studies presenting any type of racial discrimination, or any manifestation of racism that was perceived by wome

Section 8 vouchers help low-income families relocate to lower-poverty neighborhoods, potentially altering neighborhood racial/ethnic composition and exposure to perceived discrimination. The Moving to Opportunity study randomized families to a low-poverty voucher, traditional voucher, or control. Low-poverty voucher recipients could use vouchers in neighborhoods with <20% poverty, while traditional voucher recipients had no restrictions. We estimated the effect of voucher receipt at baseline (1994-1998) on non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic adolescents' perceived racial/ethnic discrimination in 2

Studies of identity-based discrimination among Chinese youth attending vocational schools and working in urban areas are scarce. To contribute to the global understanding, we adopted an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design with 204 Chinese internal migrant youth (Aged 16-24, 68.1% male, Mage = 20.17 years, SD = 1.57) to examine the associations between perceived discrimination and psychological adjustment, and the moderating roles of coping and perceived social support. In the first phase, participants completed self-report measures, and in the second phase, we interviewed a subsample o

The human primary gustatory cortex (hPGC) resides in the insula. How this region processes and represents taste stimuli is still under investigation. Here, we use ultra-high field (7 Tesla) fMRI to investigate whether the insular cortex discriminates the 5 basic tastes (quality) and the perceived valence of the tastes. Eight healthy young volunteers rated the valence (positive, negative, and neutral) of a series of tastants delivered as small liquid boluses via a gustometer during a preliminary off-line intake session. Functional acquisition was set up to fully cover the insular cortex at high

Perceived discrimination is a pervasive social stressor linked to adverse health outcomes, and these effects appear to be mediated at least in part by immune system alterations that may affect inflammation-related diseases. To determine the cellular mechanisms involved, we investigated the association between everyday perceived discrimination and circulating monocyte counts in data from the 2016 Health and Retirement Study Venous Blood Study (n = 6332). After adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, body mass index, smoking, and alcohol consumption, individuals reporting higher levels of percei

BACKGROUND: Although childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been widely recognized for its association with sleep disturbance (SD) in adulthood, little is known about its associations with perceived discrimination (PD) and rumination. This study seeks to build upon existing literature by examining the impact of CSA on adult SD within a Chinese survivor sample while also investigating the mediating effects of PD and rumination on this association.
METHODS: A total of 1,210 respondents completed the Childhood Sexual Abuse Questionnaire, the Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology Self Report, the Perc
