Analysis of perceptual confusions between nine sets of consonant-vowel sounds in normal and dyslexic adults.

It is widely accepted that most developmental dyslexics perform poorly on tasks which assess phonological awareness. One reason for this association might be that the early or "input" phonological representations of speech sounds are distorted or noisy in some way. We have attempted to test this hypothesis directly. In Experiment 1, we measured the confusions that adult dyslexics and controls made when they listened to nine randomly presented consonant-vowel (CV) segments [sequence: see text] under four conditions of increasing white noise masking. Subjects could replay stimuli and were under

Perceptual changes in schizophrenia: a questionnaire survey.

Questionnaires were completed by 73 volunteers with a history of probable schizophrenia, and by 67 patients admitted to the accident wards of a general hospital. A high incidence of sensory distortions was recorded in the schizophrenic group compared with the controls, distortions of brightness contrast being the most common. Many schizophrenic patients reported that such distortions were reduced or removed early in treatment. Patients who reported visual distortions also tended to report visual hallucinations. The results are discussed with reference to the hypothesis that perceptual malfunct

The cognitive and neural correlates of "tactile consciousness": a multisensory perspective.

People's awareness of tactile stimuli has been investigated in far less detail than their awareness of stimuli in other sensory modalities. In an attempt to fill this gap, we provide an overview of studies that are pertinent to the topic of tactile consciousness. We discuss the results of research that has investigated phenomena such as "change blindness", phantom limb sensations, and numerosity judgments in tactile perception, together with the results obtained from the study of patients affected by deficits that can adversely affect tactile perception such as neglect, extinction, and numbsen

Dynamic neural compensation for distorted orientation perception in chronic astigmatism.

Astigmatism induces orientation-specific blur, distorting retinal inputs, and biasing perception. Yet individuals with chronic astigmatism often perceive orientation accurately, though the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated how the brain compensates for this distortion by recording electroencephalogram (EEG) responses from 42 participants (15 females) under astigmatic viewing conditions. Using multivariate EEG decoding and a computational model, we reconstructed population orientation tuning curves and identified neural modulation not explained by retinal inputs alone

The nature and extent of body-image disturbances in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Although body-image disturbance is among the diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, the nature and extent of this disturbance have not been precisely identified. This is the purpose of this first meta-analysis of extant research on body image and eating disorders. METHOD: Using contemporary techniques, the meta-analysis systematically examined 66 studies (from 1974 to 1993) of perceptual and attitudinal parameters of body image among anorexics and bulimics relative to control groups. RESULTS: Attitudinal body dissatisfaction, both questionnaire and self-idea

Some effects of representational friction, target size, and memory averaging on memory for vertically moving targets.

Observers viewed an animated ascending or descending target that varied in size and velocity across trials and appeared either (a) in isolation, (b) to slide along one side of a single larger stationary object, or (c) to slide between two larger stationary objects. Targets vanished without warning, and displacements (i.e., differences between actual and remembered final position) along the axis of motion and orthogonal axis were measured. Forward displacement (a) decreased with increases in implied friction, (b) increased with increases in target size for descending targets, and (c) decreased

Convergent and divergent effects of neck proprioceptive and visual motion stimulation on visual space processing in neglect.

Visual motion stimulation as well as neck muscle vibration are known to effectively modulate the subjective body orientation in spatial neglect. However, so far only motion stimulation has been demonstrated to substantially influence size and space distortion in neglect patients. The present study aimed to compare the two stimulation methods with respect to their potentially differential impact on subjective body orientation and on space and size distortion, in five neglect patients showing perceptual distortions. We found comparable beneficial effects during left motion stimulation and left n

Shape distortions and Gestalt grouping in anorthoscopic perception.

When a figure moves behind a stationary narrow slit, observers often report seeing the figure as a whole, a phenomenon called slit viewing or anorthoscopic perception. Interestingly, in slit viewing, the figure is perceived compressed along the axis of motion. As with other perceptual distortions, it is unclear whether the perceptual space in the vicinity of the slit or the representation of the figure itself undergoes compression. In a psychophysical experiment, we tested these two hypotheses. We found that the percept of a stationary bar, presented within the slit, was not distorted even whe

High frequency distortion products from the ears of two bat species, Megaderma lyra and Carollia perspicillata.

In two echolocating bat species, Megaderma lyra and Carollia perspicillata 2f1-f2 distortion products were measured acoustically in the outer ear canal for f1 frequencies between 5 and 95 kHz in an attempt to study nonlinear cochlear processes at high frequencies. Similar to other mammals, the input/output (I/O) functions of 2f1-f2 show non-monotonicities and notches at f1 levels between 40-70 dB SPL. The slope of the initial rise of the 2f1-f2 I/O functions increased with f1 frequency from 0.73 (5 kHz) to 1.41 (95 kHz) in Megaderma and from 0.66 (7.5 kHz) to 1.47 (95 kHz) in Carollia. With in

Perceptual adaptation to facial asymmetries.

Humans and other animals are highly sensitive to deviations from bilateral symmetry and prefer symmetric mates. Fluctuating asymmetries (FAs) are random deviations from perfect symmetry that can result from developmental instability. Human perceptions of facial asymmetry are driven by FAs and insensitive to directional asymmetries (DAs), which have a consistent direction of bias (e.g., left side always larger) across the population and are unrelated to developmental stability. We hypothesized that perceptual adaptation may filter out DAs and provide a proximate mechanism for this perceptual fo

Articulatory function after resection of the tongue and floor of the mouth: palatometric and perceptual evaluation.

Linguapalatal contact patterns and the time course of changes in contacts during utterances of/asa, ata, a sa, aca/ were measured using electropalatography (EPG). The relations between these data and perceptual scores in 17 glossectomized patients after various surgical methods were examined. The linguapalatal contact patterns produced during perceptually less distorted sounds varied with the place and manner of articulation. Patterns having very few contacts or a posterior groove produced more distorted /s/ sounds; however, types of EPG patterns producing less distorted /s/ sounds were relati

Body representations in schizophrenia: an alteration of body structural description is common to people with schizophrenia while alterations of body image worsen with passivity symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with schizophrenia, particularly those with passivity symptoms, often feel that their actions and thoughts are controlled by an external agent. Recent evidence has elucidated the role of body representations in the aetiology of passivity symptoms, yet one representation - body structural description - has not yet been examined. Additionally, body image has rarely been examined outside of bodily illusions (e.g., rubber hand experiments) and external validation is required. METHODS: Body structural description was assessed with an in-between task and a matching body pa

Dissociative experiences among Kenyan youth in the Nairobi metropolitan area: Associations with psychosis risk symptoms.

Dissociative experiences, including perceptual distortions, daydreaming and memory lapses, are clinically relevant and possible correlates and associated features of psychosis risk rather than established prodromal indicators. This study examined dissociative experiences patterns among Kenyan youth and their associations with sociodemographic factors, risk for psychosis and mood disorders. This was a cross-sectional study among youth aged 14-30 years in the Nairobi Metropolitan Area. Participants completed the Washington Early Recognition Center Affectivity and Psychosis Screen (WERCAP) and th

Acoustic evaluation of voice signal distortion by videoconferencing platforms and devices used in telepractice for cleft palate.

The usefulness and effectiveness of telepractice have been reported in recent years. Treatment of cleft palate patients with compensatory articulation is based on perceptual identification. Telepractice using videoconferencing platforms causes voice signal distortion and impacts auditory-perceptual perception. This study aimed acoustically examine voice signal distortion and determine the optimal videoconferencing platforms, in addition to the phonemes that can be discriminated with the same quality as in face-to-face interactions. ATR503 with 50 phoneme-balanced Japanese speech sentences was

Effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on altered perception of One's own face.

BACKGROUND: Chronic orofacial pain (COP) patients often perceive the painful face area as "swollen" without clinical signs; such self-reported illusions of the face are termed perceptual distortion (PD). The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying PD remain elusive. OBJECTIVE: To test the neuromodulatory effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on PD in healthy individuals, to gain insight into the cortical mechanisms underlying PD. METHODS: PD was induced experimentally by injections of local anesthetic (LA) around the infraorbital nerve and measured as perceived size

Somatoparaphrenia: a body delusion. A review of the neuropsychological literature.

A review of published brain-damaged patients showing delusional beliefs concerning the contralesional side of the body (somatoparaphrenia) is presented. Somatoparaphrenia has been reported, with a few exceptions, in right-brain-damaged patients, with motor and somatosensory deficits, and the syndrome of unilateral spatial neglect. Somatoparaphrenia, most often characterized by a delusion of disownership of left-sided body parts, may however occur without associated anosognosia for motor deficits, and personal neglect. Also somatosensory deficits may not be a core pathological mechanism of soma

Distortions of space and time in and around objects and events.

Our perceptual experience is not a veridical representation of the world around us. We perceive structure in the form of objects and events, and this structure has consequences. Like gravity distorts space and time in the physical world, objects and events distort space and time in our minds, resulting in a plethora of illusions that observers can readily appreciate for themselves. Moreover, many of these distortions of space (caused by objects) and time (caused by events) appear to be perfect analogs of one another-suggesting a deep relationship between the representation of space and time, o

Ambiguous pictorial depth cues and perceptions of nonrigid motion in the three-loop figure.

The three-loop figure is a two-dimensional (2-D) pattern that generates (mis)perceptions of nonrigid three-dimensional (3-D) structure when rotated about its centre. Such observations have been described as counterexamples to the principle whereby a moving object is presumed to be rigid, provided that a rigid interpretation is possible (ie the 'rigidity constraint'). In the present investigation we demonstrated that stationary three-loop figures exhibit many of the classic properties of multistable/ambiguous figures, with any one of several possible 3-D configurations being reported at any one

Different effects of flash-grab and frame stimuli on position shift and shape distortion.

In the flash-grab effect, an object flashed on a moving background appears to be shifted in the direction of the motion. The same background motion also distorts the flashed object's perceived shape. An even greater shift in the perceived location is produced by the frame effect, raising the question of whether it also produces a shape distortion. This phenomenon is important because the frame effect has been linked to perceptual stabilization during eye movements where the whole visual field acts as the frame. We found that, unlike the flash-grab case, shape was preserved for the frame effect
