Effect of Face Masks on Voice Quality Associated with Young and Older Chinese Adult Speakers.

OBJECTIVES: Face masks have become important after the pandemic, but the change in voice when wearing a face mask is still unclear. The study investigated the effect of face masks on the acoustic and perceptual characteristics of voice quality associated with young and older Chinese adults. METHODS: Voice samples of the sustained vowel /a/ and continuous speech produced by 44 older and 61 young adults with and without an ASTM level-3 surgical face mask were recorded and analyzed. Perceptual and acoustic parameters including mean fundamental frequency (F0) and intensity, perturbation measures

Deficits in auditory temporal and spectral resolution in language-impaired children.

Between 3 and 6 per cent of children who are otherwise unimpaired have extreme difficulties producing and understanding spoken language. This disorder is typically labelled specific language impairment. Children diagnosed with specific language impairment often have accompanying reading difficulties (dyslexia), but not all children with reading difficulties have specific language impairment. Some researchers claim that language impairment arises from failures specific to language or cognitive processing. Others hold that language impairment results from a more elemental problem that makes affe

The search for correlates of age-related cochlear synaptopathy: Measures of temporal envelope processing and spatial release from speech-on-speech masking.

Older adults often experience difficulties understanding speech in adverse listening conditions. It has been suggested that for listeners with normal and near-normal audiograms, these difficulties may, at least in part, arise from age-related cochlear synaptopathy. The aim of this study was to assess if performance on auditory tasks relying on temporal envelope processing reveal age-related deficits consistent with those expected from cochlear synaptopathy. Listeners aged 20 to 66 years were tested using a series of psychophysical, electrophysiological, and speech-perception measures using sti

A crew of listeners with no more than "slight" hearing loss who exhibit binaural deficits also exhibit higher levels of stimulus-independent internal noise.

Listeners having, at most, "slight" hearing loss may exhibit deficits in binaural detection which appear to stem from increased levels of stimulus-dependent, additive internal noise [Bernstein and Trahiotis, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 140, 3540-3548 (2016); J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 144, 292-307 (2018)]. This study reports that a small crew of such listeners also exhibits increased levels of low-level, stimulus-independent, additive internal noise. Detection thresholds were measured in: (1) the NoSπ configuration as a function of masker level; (2) the NρSπ configuration as a function of masker interaural c

Prediction of tinnitus masking benefit within a case series using a spiking neural network model.

Masking has been widely used as a tinnitus therapy, with large individual differences in its effectiveness. The basis of this variation is unknown. We examined individual tinnitus and psychological responses to three masking types, energetic masking (bilateral broadband static or rain noise [BBN]), informational masking (BBN with a notch at tinnitus pitch and 3-dimensional cues) and a masker combining both effects (BBN with spatial cues). Eleven participants with chronic tinnitus were followed for 12 months, each person used each masking approach for 3 months with a 1 month washout-baseline. T

The difference in poststimulus suppression between residual inhibition and forward masking.

The phenomenon of tinnitus masking (TM) and residual inhibition (RI) of tinnitus are two ways to investigate how external sounds interact with tinnitus: TM provides insight on the fusion between external sound activity and tinnitus related activity while RI provides insight on how the external sound might suppress the tinnitus related activity for a period of time. Differences in masking level between the tinnitus and an external tone with tinnitus characteristics (frequency, loudness) have previously shown a high level of heterogeneity. The difference in poststimulus suppression between the t

Level effects in psychophysical two-tone suppression.

Measurements of psychophysical two-tone suppression in a number of subjects are described. Levels of the stimulus components (suppressee, L1, and suppressor, L2) were the primary experimental variables. In all experiments the pulsation threshold was used with the probe frequency fr fixed at the suppressee frequency f1. In an initial experiment f1 was fixed at 1 kHz. The suppressor frequency f2 ranged from 0.2 to 1.4 kHz. At appropriate levels all subjects showed significant suppression. Suppression was found to decrease to zero as f2 approached f1. The amount of suppression depended on both L1

Changes in Reaction Time, Balance and Neuroplasticity after Exercise with a Face Mask in Male Adults with Mild COVID-19 Symptoms.

This study compared physiological, perceptual and neuroprotective hormone and metabolite responses and changes in coordination as an effect of aerobic exercise with and without a face mask in people with mild symptoms of COVID-19. Forty men took part in this study. Half declared mild symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the 6 months before the study (Declared) and the other half did not (Non-declared). In a random order, with a 7-day interval, they performed a 30-min walk on a treadmill at a speed of 6 km/h wearing a surgical face mask (Masked) and without it (Unmasked). The heart rate, heart r

Adults' item and order errors on sequences of time-compressed rhyming words.

This investigation provided normative data for the intelligibility of time-compressed (TC) phonemes in 40 normal-hearing adults aged 18-26 yrs. Individual Ss were presented with 5-word rhyming sequences from the Fairbanks Rhyme Test (e.g., cat-bat-hat-mat-rat) sent to a monaural earphone at 40 db re SRT, and required to write the initial phonemes in the order as heard. Sequences were either at normal speed or at 60% TC, either unmasked or under contralateral multitalker masking at 65 db re SRT, counterbalanced for ear (R,L) and presentation order (R-L, L-R). Significant effects for both TC and

Impact of Surgical Masks on Newborns' Spontaneous Face Processing Skills.

At birth, newborns prefer upright faces over other stimuli, indicating that they already pay specific attention to facial internal features, with expectations about their featural configuration. The study investigated whether surgical mask wearing in maternity wards due to COVID-19 disrupts newborns' face processing. Using a visual preference paradigm, newborns saw paired images of the same face. In Condition 1, both faces were upright, one masked, one unmasked. No preference was found. In Condition 2, newborns saw an upright masked face versus the same masked face but inverted (i.e., upside d

Infants' Visual Preference for Upright Faces During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Japan.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic required face masks to be worn in public spaces, changing daily face-to-face communication. This study investigated whether infants perceived masked faces as faces during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when wearing masks in public was nearly universal in Japan. Between July 2021 and November 2022, we conducted an experiment using a novel remote method to examine infants' preferences for upright versus inverted faces under both masked and unmasked conditions. Overall, infants aged 4-5 months and 7-8 months (n = 32 in each age group) preferred upri

The Effect of Speech Masking on the Human Subcortical Response to Continuous Speech.

Auditory masking-the interference of the encoding and processing of an acoustic stimulus imposed by one or more competing stimuli-is nearly omnipresent in daily life and presents a critical barrier to many listeners, including people with hearing loss, users of hearing aids and cochlear implants, and people with auditory processing disorders. The perceptual aspects of masking have been actively studied for several decades, and particular emphasis has been placed on masking of speech by other speech sounds. The neural effects of such masking, especially at the subcortical level, have been much

Spatial release from masking in crocodilians.

Ambient noise is a major constraint on acoustic communication in both animals and humans. One mechanism to overcome this problem is Spatial Release from Masking (SRM), the ability to distinguish a target sound signal from masking noise when both sources are spatially separated. SRM is well described in humans but has been poorly explored in animals. Although laboratory tests with trained individuals have suggested that SRM may be a widespread ability in vertebrates, it may play a limited role in natural environments. Here we combine field experiments with investigations in captivity to test wh

Masking release in temporally fluctuating noise depends on comodulation and overall level in Cope's gray treefrog.

Many animals communicate acoustically in large social aggregations. Among the best studied are frogs, in which males form large breeding choruses where they produce loud vocalizations to attract mates. Although chorus noise poses significant challenges to communication, it also possesses features, such as comodulation in amplitude fluctuations, that listeners may be evolutionarily adapted to exploit in order to achieve release from masking. This study investigated the extent to which the benefits of comodulation masking release (CMR) depend on overall noise level in Cope's gray treefrog (Hyla

Developmental Conductive Hearing Loss Reduces Modulation Masking Release.

Hearing-impaired individuals experience difficulties in detecting or understanding speech, especially in background sounds within the same frequency range. However, normally hearing (NH) human listeners experience less difficulty detecting a target tone in background noise when the envelope of that noise is temporally gated (modulated) than when that envelope is flat across time (unmodulated). This perceptual benefit is called modulation masking release (MMR). When flanking masker energy is added well outside the frequency band of the target, and comodulated with the original modulated masker,

Forward masking among infant and adult listeners.

Psychophysical forward-masked thresholds were estimated for 3- and 6-month-old infants and for adults. Listeners detected a repeated 1000-Hz probe, with 16-ms rise time, no steady-state duration, and 16-ms fall time. Unmasked thresholds were determined for one group of listeners who were trained to respond when they heard the probe but not at other times. In the masking conditions, each tone burst was preceded by a 100-ms broadband noise masker at 65 dB SPL. Listeners were trained to respond when they heard the probe and masker, but not when they heard the masker alone. The masker-probe interv

Empirical tests demonstrating two coexisting sources of tinnitus: a case study.

Empirical tests for a relation between tinnitus and spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) have been previously presented (Penner & Burns, 1987). Modification of these tests, however, is necessary for the special case reported here in which a female subject has tinnitus consisting of an annoying SOAE in the right ear and tinnitus unrelated to SOAEs in the left ear. This case is of interest because it provides a forum for extending the tests of Penner and Burns (1987) and because the extended tests can be used to prove that one subject's tinnitus can have two distinct sources.

[Remote masking as a test of cochlear conductive hearing losses (author's transl)].

The authors studied the remote masking (RM) in patients with Menière's disorder during the hearing loss fluctuations produced either by the disorder or by the glycerol test (Klockhoff). The RM was recorded for pulsed tones of 250, 500 and 1 000 Hz; the masker was a continuous narrow-band noise centered at 3 000 Hz, with 305 Hz (2 875-3 180 Hz) bandwidth, delivered at an overall level of 98 dB SPL. The results showed that the RM decreases during the acute phase, i.e. when the hearing loss increases, and, increases if the glycerol tests do not significantly modify the RM value. They seem to conf
