Social anxiety is characterized by biased learning about performance and the self.

People learn about their self from social information, and recent work suggests that healthy adults show a positive bias for learning self-related information. In contrast, social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by a negative view of the self, yet what causes and maintains this negative self-view is not well understood. Here the authors use a novel experimental paradigm and computational model to test the hypothesis that biased social learning regarding self-evaluation and self-feelings represents a core feature that distinguishes adults with SAD from healthy controls. Twenty-one adult

Anxiety, movement kinematics, and visual attention in elite-level performers.

We tested the predictions of Attentional Control Theory (ACT) by examining the effect of anxiety on attention control and the subsequent influence on both performance effectiveness and performance efficiency within a perceptual-motor context. A sample (N = 16) of elite shotgun shooters was tested under counterbalanced low (practice) and high (competition) anxiety conditions. A head-mounted, corneal reflection system allowed point of gaze to be calculated in relation to the scene, while motion of the gun was evaluated using markers placed on the barrel which were captured by two stationary came

Music performance anxiety in skilled pianists: effects of social-evaluative performance situation on subjective, autonomic, and electromyographic reactions.

Music performance anxiety (MPA), or stage fright in music performance, is a serious problem for many musicians, because performance impairment accompanied by MPA can threaten their career. The present study sought to clarify on how a social-evaluative performance situation affects subjective, autonomic, and motor stress responses in pianists. Measurements of subjective state anxiety, heart rate (HR), sweat rate (SR), and electromyographic (EMG) activity of upper extremity muscles were obtained while 18 skilled pianists performed a solo piano piece(s) of their choice under stressful (competitio

Anxiety and Performance in High-Achieving Adolescents: Associations Among 8 General and Specific Anxiety Measures and 13 School Grades.

Despite years of research, the links between domain-general and domain-specific anxieties (e.g., social), as well as their links with academic performance in different domains remain poorly understood. The current study explores anxiety-academic performance associations across eight domain-general and domain-specific anxiety measures (tapping into trait, state, maths, spatial, and social anxiety, worry, and anxiety sensitivity, as well as symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, GAD) and 13 school subjects in a large (N = ~800) sample of schoolchildren (Mage = 15.26), selected for high achiev

Feeling safe but appearing anxious: Differential effects of alcohol on anxiety and social performance in individuals with social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and alcohol use disorders (AUD) co-occur frequently and there is preliminary evidence that alcohol might reduce social anxiety. It is, however, unclear which mechanisms contribute to the anxiety reducing effect, particularly regarding key aspects of social anxiety such as deficits in social performance. We compared self-rated and physiological measures of anxiety as well as self- and observer-rated social performance in a sample of 62 individuals with SAD and 60 nonanxious control participants during a speech task after receiving either alcohol, an alcohol-free pl

Associations between clinician-observed test anxiety and neuropsychological performance in older adults.

OBJECTIVE: As dementia diagnoses rise with population aging, understanding factors that influence neuropsychological performance become increasingly important. While research has established links between test anxiety and poorer test results in younger populations, its effects in older adults remain unclear. METHOD: A total of 342 cognitively unimpaired older adults from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center were included. Participants were categorized according to clinician-observed test anxiety using the Social Behavioral Observer Checklist into Anxious versus Non-anxious groups and

Psychotherapeutic Treatment of Attachment Trauma in Musicians with Severe Music Performance Anxiety.

The aim of this paper is to contribute to the further development of a coherent theory of music performance anxiety (MPA) and its treatment. I have previously proposed three forms of MPA-focal, MPA with social anxiety, and MPA with panic and/or depression. An attachment disorder was proposed as a possible underlying psychopathology for this third type of MPA. Accordingly, open-ended in-depth assessment interviews of three professional musicians presenting with severe MPA that included panic attacks and depressed mood were analyzed from an attachment theory perspective. Two of these musicians p

Depression, anxiety, and academic performance in COVID-19: a cross-sectional study.

Depression and anxiety are common after months of social isolation, and they can have a negative impact on anyone's quality of life if they are not treated promptly and appropriately. The aim of this study was to determine if the change to online modality courses and the presence of depression or anxiety symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with a difference in the college student's academic achievement. This study was a cross-sectional survey in which we used the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). Also, we examined the students'

What determines observer-rated social performance in individuals with social anxiety disorder?

Clark and Wells (1995) proposed that cognitive variables and safety behaviors are related to social performance in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Here, we tested this relationship by concurrent assessment of cognitive, behavioral, and physiological variables and social performance in a prototypical social interaction situation. 103 participants with SAD and 23 healthy controls interacted with a confederate. Anxiety, self-focused attention, cognitions, and safety behaviors were assessed by self-report and by confederate ratings. Social performance was evaluated by independent observers using a

D-Cycloserine and performance under different states of anxiety in healthy volunteers.

RATIONALE: There is interest in the development of augmentation therapy in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Recent publications have shown that D-cycloserine can benefit exposure therapy in a group of acrophobic (height phobic) subjects and in patients with social anxiety disorder. These studies were based on the animal data suggesting that drugs acting to enhance glutamate function may be developed to accelerate the behavioural treatment of anxiety disorders. Perhaps by enhancing glutamate/N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor function, learning is thus enhanced. This study examines the effects of

Positive narrative writing reduces music performance anxiety more effectively than traumatic narrative.

Music performance anxiety (MPA) is a multidimensional construct that may impair performance quality and mental health, depending on individual and contextual factors. Current interventions are often costly, require specialized expertise, or lack feasibility. Expressive writing intervention (EWI) is low-cost and easy to implement. This study randomly assigned 120 music students with high MPA to three 3-day writing conditions: positive narrative (describing successful performances), traumatic narrative (describing stressful performances), or neutral control. MPA was measured pre- and post-interv

Performance and interaction anxiety: specific relationships with other- and self-evaluation concerns.

This study examines whether performance anxiety (PA) is specifically associated with other-evaluation concerns and interaction anxiety (IA) with self-evaluation concerns. Individuals with public speaking fears and high levels of PA or IA were distinguishable from nonanxious controls on measures taken during a public speaking challenge. In addition, high PA individuals exhibited more observer-rated negative speech characteristics in an Other-Evaluation condition compared to a Self-Evaluation condition, but high IA individuals and nonanxious individuals did not. These results provide some eviden

Post-event processing and memory bias for performance feedback in social anxiety.

Despite predictions following from cognitive theories of anxiety, evidence for memory biases in social anxiety has been mixed. This study extends previous research by using stimuli relevant to participants' concerns and allowing time for post-event processing. Participants high (n=42) or low (n=39) in social anxiety symptoms gave speeches and received standardized feedback on their and a confederate's performance. Participants then took recognition and recall tests for the feedback immediately after it was given and after a two-day delay. Results showed no recall biases. However, the hypothesi

Guided mastery and stimulus exposure treatments for severe performance anxiety in agoraphobics.

The present experiment compared two models of treatment for high performance-related anxiety in agoraphobics: the stimulus exposure model, which emphasizes extinguishing anxiety by promoting prolonged exposure to phobic stimuli, and the self-efficacy model, which emphasizes building a sense of mastery by promoting rapid proficient performance accomplishments. Subjects were 26 agoraphobics who could perform phobic activities when behaviorally tested, but who became highly anxious when doing so. Subjects were assigned at random to either (a) guided mastery treatment based on self-efficacy theory

The effects of anxiety, depressive, and obsessive-compulsive subclinical symptoms on performance monitoring.

Dysfunctional performance monitoring has been proposed as a potential neurocognitive biomarker of various internalising psychopathological symptoms, such as anxiety, depressive, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Given the overlapping neurophysiological findings and high rates of comorbidity amongst these internalising symptoms, an important research gap pertains to the specificity of performance monitoring to each of these symptoms. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of anxiety, depressive, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms on performance monitoring in healthy adults. The

The relationship of post-event processing to self-evaluation of performance in social anxiety.

Socially anxious and control participants engaged in a social interaction with a confederate and then wrote about themselves or the other person (i.e., self-focused post-event processing [SF-PEP] vs. other-focused post-event processing [OF-PEP]) and completed several questionnaires. One week later, participants completed measures concerning their evaluation of their performance in the social interaction and the degree to which they engaged in post-event processing (PEP) during the week. Socially anxious individuals evaluated their performance in the social interaction more poorly than control

Social anxiety and self-evaluation of social performance in a nonclinical sample of children.

In an investigation of socially anxious children's social behavior and self-evaluation, 28 high socially anxious and 28 low socially anxious children, ages 11 to 13 years, appraised their performance before and after participating in a role-play task. Half of the children were given video feedback prior to giving their posttask self-evaluations. High socially anxious children anticipated poorer performance on the role-play task, and some group differences in observed social performance were evident. Self-evaluations from video feedback only improved for the high socially anxious children who d

A comparison of the effects of lorazepam with those of propranolol on experimentally-induced anxiety and performance.

In a double-blind cross-over study the effects of propranolol (80 mg) and of lorazepam (1 or 2.5 mg) were assessed in normal student volunteers using a number of performance tests and mood-rating and bodily symptom questionnaires. Drug effects on experimentally-induced anxiety were also studied. The high dose of lorazepam impaired performance in digit-symbol substitution, symbol copying and verbal learning tests, and increased subjects' ratings of dizziness. Both lorazepam and propranolol increased simple reaction time. Lorazepam but not propranolol increased ratings of sedation. Although the
